Dude your code still works 3 years later. I was looking at these as an option instead of a wood burner for a 2 stall garage.. I was watching videos trying to see what to do. Well I said if his code works ill order it now. Well it worked. Lol. Thanks man. That 30 bucks basically paid for the 3 year replacement plan and shipping

That ground does not belong on the neutral buss. A sub-panel must have a separate ground buss from the neutral buss. Sub-panel neutral buss is not to be grounded to the box. The only place neutral and ground wires meet is at the main service panel. The little jumper that comes with the panel is not used on a sub-panel. Love your channel and enthusiasm!
@daleorth7690
@daleorth7690 3 года назад
Yes this is true. If something were to happen to your neutral wire (white wire) that feeds that sub, then guess what all that load is now returning back onto your ground wire (bare conductor). Which is extremely bad news because the bare wire is used to usually ground out the outside shell of appliances , etc... which by now have became energized parts. Its never fun to go open your stainless steal fridge or over and get electrocuted.

New Subscriber here: Michael, after bumping into your first video, I HAD to watch the rest. Love, love, LOVE what you're doing. You make it fun, interesting, educational and humorous all at the same time. I've gone back and watched all 14 videos and they all have something interesting. I'm like so many others out there thinking about concrete counter tops and hesitant to try it. You've helped me gain the confidence to tackle it next spring. I think I'll start with some smaller projects just to get a better feel for it first. I especially loved the Q&A video you did because it answered a lot of questions I had myself. I'm amazed at how fast your channel has grown in such a short period of time, but I'm thrilled for you because you certainly deserve it. Can't wait to see what you have in store for us for 2020.

Hey Michael! Great video. One point I would like to make about fire protection. The extinguisher you have in your shed is not adequate for what you want to protect. The extinguisher you showed appears to be a 5B:C extinguisher. You should replace it with an extinguisher rated at least 2A:10:B:C. An A rated extinguisher will better protect against flammable materials such as paper, wood, saw dust, etc. The B rating only protects against flammable liquids and will not work as well on an A rated fire. An extinguisher with a C rating ensures you will not be electrocuted if activated toward a live electrical circuit. Look for an ABC fire extinguisher with a minimum 2A:10:B:C rating.

Idk about your codes in your state but in my state a sub panel box has to be grounded in the earth 8 ft just like the main panel box if the box is in a seperate building off the main. Also with a subpanel box your neutrals are supposed to go on the bus bar with the insulator behind it and the grounds are supposed to go on a seperate bus bar directly screwed to box. The green bonding screw not installed as well. That is my state though your codes are probably different. I love your videos and subscribed.

Honestly, I was an electrician till a few months ago and I can tell you that your instructions were pretty good. The only thing I would add is make sure the breaker is off before you turn on the main breaker. Also testing the panel prior to starting work to make sure the power was off. All that being said, running that heater, the tablesaw and a light, you may be getting really close to overloading that 10-3 feeding your panel. May want to consider upgrading to a 50 amp panel. Great job and I look forward to your next video!

Yes this is true but you typically dont want to have to turn off utility when using a space. You build to use the space and maximize. You can of course rig it or leave it below your usage capacity but why limit you abilities when its a fairly cheap fix if you can do it yourself?
@jordanwiertsema5287

Also you typically don't want to load breakers past 80% capabilities.

It's interesting how the electrical standards differ depending on where you are from. Here in Czech republic you will never find a naked wire (even though it's ground) and also you cannot switch colours at all. We use 230V as standard voltage and 380V as the heavy duty one but it's basically all connected the same way

Yes, both comments above correct. Not enough ampacity supplying your shed so you'll probably pop your shed panel feed breaker in the house when you have the heater running and turn on your table saw. Will also leave you w/o lights so keep a small flashlight in your pocket! Out buildings with larger tools (table saws, air compressor) need 60 amp: and with a welder, 70A-100A feed is appropriate. But with a larger feed you could add A/C too! Bump a wall out for a cot and you could move in! Your concrete vids rule though, so stick with them for sure. Enjoy them a lot...
@mattben

I looked at the heat itself and it only pulls 4800 watts so even at the 80% rule he has almost 1000 watts extra available so it will be close

There are comments, correctly stating, you need to do a load assessment before adding the heater. As an electrician, I do not open and work in a hot panels, nor do I leave it opened for accidental contact. It seems your feeder is undersized to run all equipment. The white wire needs to be redesigned as a hot wire, preferably red in color. NEC is very specific regarding this.

First off .... I am from the UK (240/415v) ;0) The only things I would call up are 1. Not checking the board is dead before you work on it! 2. It looks like you had a tad too much cable at your socket (receptacle) Having enough to allow you to pull the socket and get to the connections is enough anything more means you get your socket self heating! One thing I would recommend is to put your hand on the plug after the heater has been running a while just to check weather you are going to need your fire extinguisher ;0) Working out your actual load is simple enough if you can do basic maths. Power = Volts times Current so transposed you get Current = Power over Voltage .... 4800W divided by 240V = 20A (I suspect the actual load quoted was just the heater so you need to add your fan load in too!

@@MichaelBuilds I was thinking more about INSULATION!!! He has a 30, 2 20's and a 15 amp, so he better be supplying at least 85Amps to the shed and that sub panel should be feeding from an 100A amp 220 main in the house because he doesn't have a "remote" main on that box. You always want to over size by at least 20% so as not to have any issues and the breakers will trip before the wire fries. He may get a welder later. He could put a little rheostat like a 220v light dimmer or 220v fan rheostat on the "fan only" to control the fan speed to quite it down while keeping the heat throwing down. Then it will be Michael Mods! :)

If its a sub panel I don't think you run separate ground rods, otherwise you have 2 paths for the power to go.. not really safe

I'm a licensed electrician/electrical engineer. You did fine on the wiring. But with that heater running, you've almost maxed out what you can run in that shed. You're going to need a bigger sub panel and breaker running it. Check with your local service provider to see what service you have to the main panel and adjust accordingly to fit your power needs. I had to run a complete separate 200 amp service to my shop.

It depends on the receptacle really. Some 240v appliances may call to use the white wire for the grounded conductor. However if you have the same receptacle as he shows in this video, then yes you can safe off one of the conductors. And use the black and red wire for the receptacle and safe off the white one.

Thanks for the video. How does this compare to, say, a kerosene or propane heater? I was shopping the flea market for a kerosene heater when I saw this exact 240v “garage heater,” but Berko-branded. It also seems to be sold as “Qmark.” I need something for my drafty workshop after getting displaced by an EF4 tornado but technically the lease says I can’t do anything with 240v. Then again, it also says I can’t stay there, so I’m just gonna have to ignore the lease for now. They actually have a standard 15 amp outlet connected to 240v which I didn’t realize until it blew up one of my work lights. That’s right: the shop didn’t even have lighting. What’s worse is that all the 120v outlets are on the same circuit and the maximum 120v space heater won’t cut it. Plugging in two will only blow the breaker and plugging in even one means I can’t plug in any of my tools… which was the original intent when leasing the workshop (obviously). I swapped in the proper 240v receptacle with the sideways blade to prevent it from happening again so I’m technically already messing with 240v in violation of the lease. ;) Maybe now I can make a pigtail to plug this in without doing any rewiring they can trace to me. I already did that to plug in my twin bro’s Chevy Volt, which I could’ve done without a pigtail if I didn’t swap the receptacle. The Volt’s 120v portable EVSE “charger” secretly supports 240v and it has been the only way to get warm at night (sleep in the car, plugged in with the heat on). Note: Not every Volt included this same EVSE. Yeah, my Corolla was carried off and crushed in the same tornado so we’re down to just the Volt.

This heater is not as effective as a propane or karesene heater. But in a 12’x10’ space it preformed great. Now that I’m in a 14’x18’ space, Unfortunately it does not have to power to heat that large of space on its own. I am anxious to see how it does once I get the shed properly insulated tho.
@emmettturner9452

@@MichaelBuilds Thanks! I’m trying to put Reflectix insulation where the ceiling should be and then I’ll use expanding foam and other stuff to seal around the the edges of the boarded up windows where wind blows right through. The walls have several places where the mortar is cracked between the cinder blocks leaving long gaps that wind blows right through also. Once I have all that sealed I expect it to be much easier to warm, even without insulated walls/roofs. I guess I’ll see how much better the 120v space heater works after doing all that before deciding on the 240v or kerosene. Thanks!

You mistakenly referred to the 14/2 as a low voltage. You meant to say that 14awg is the smallest gauge permissible by code in residential installs ( usually lighting only) because it is rated at 15 amp.Lower current draw. The neutral that was used as your second hot leg is permissible, just place red tape on it and make sure it does go to the red leg in your breaker panel.Yes, it is a breaker panel, not a fuse box. Separate your grounds from your neutrals in that sub panel.There are technical reasons why we only bond them at the main panel.Make sure the neutral bar in your sub is isolated by special standoffs. Add a grounding bar to that panel. It is not nec code compliant to bond neutral anywhere else except at main panel. I mean all this with good intentions to help you.

i bough this heater with out knowing it’s a 240 v and i’m young so i would not be able to install all of that any other suggestions ?

Unfortunately you’ll have to return it for a 120v. There’s absolutely no way to run a 240v unit on anything under a 30amp breaker. I’m uploading a video in the next couple days of NewAirs 120v portable model and it will come with a 10% discount

I have this and it does work great although I can’t get the thermostat to turn the fan off so in order to keep my feeder rats (for my snakes) warm it runs 24/7 and kills my electric bill. The heat will turn off with the thermostat but not the fan. Is this just mine being broke or has anyone else had this issue??

As a retired electrician one and all should know not to drill holes beyond the center of any 2x4 or 2x6 incase of screws coming through from the outside on the inside one would mount wire protection plates so wires could not be damaged after interior has been closed but the 12 gauge wires in this video are running the risk of being damaged because they are passing through past the center point of the stud therefore it becomes a liability on you're part if it burns down after you sell said place now that you have shown it in your video I get what you're doing to be helpful but the safety protocols for even you're protection are missing if even you forget or and a son or daughter or any family member adds something to the outside of your shed please be extremely cautious or redo said wiring even for the heater it was also not done correctly be safe take care :)

Now you can install a 12-14000 btu A/C unit. Just have to find one that uses 30amp 240v.

The NEMA 6-30R receptacle should be installed centered in a 4-11/16 electrical box. The installation as shown is not according to the electrical code in North America., as far as I know.

I'm not an electrician and I'm not saying you did it wrong but I prefer to see a service loop inside the box. The way you have it run, there is no slack to make adjustments (when/if needed).

He is wrong in his explanation of wires. Ignore. Also dont run your staples so tight to your sheathing .

@nonetheless01
@nonetheless01 4 года назад
@@MichaelBuilds no big deal , it would get most people by, a neutral is always white but a white is not always a neutral , like wise a black is not always a "hot" . The staples should not physically press the cable against the 2x4 there should be a gap , your way makes a nicer looking wiring job but code wants there to be a gap , that being said millions of homes are done like yours with the staple tight to the cable and the cable tight to the board with no issue.
@otherbob23
@otherbob23 4 года назад
Just enough gap so it doesn't pinch the wires, or squish the insulation enough to "short circuit"
