Thanks for sharing Jeff! Your videos are really helpful- this video in particular. I keep seeing other videos where all people talk about is measuring from the center of the room, and they rarely ever talk about being able to adjust the install to fit certain needs. This video makes me feel confident that I can map my tile out however I see fit, as long as I'm not cutting corners and jeopardizing structural integrity. Quick Question* How can I use this method of floor leveling, if I also plan to use QEP leveling system, mainly for lippage leveling? Or do I have to choose one or the other?

Really enjoy your channel and the demeanor in which you explain the process. I have dealt with alot of contractors before and many of them seem to become agitated when ask why something is done a certain way as opposed to a diffrent way. Thats probably why the DYI market has gotten so big. Many homeowners don't want to deal with them.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY

The reality is this. There there are 3 different approaches to renovations. 10 year 20 year and 40 year. The home owner needs to identify which market thy are renovating for. Resale , temporary value or lifetime reward. Once this is determined you can decide which direction to take in regards to material cost an investment .

HEY... Is there a rule for AESTHETICS with 24X6 tiles... when it comes to doors' thresholds? Should the tiles be PARALLEL or PERPENDICULAR to the door, in a SMALL bathroom? The difference is.... having one straight line of ONE TILE under the door at threshold, or a jagged line where the transition to a carpet is... AND BTW, as you enter this small bathroom, the TUB is parallel to the door's wall ... Please advise ASAP... AND MANY THANKS for your advise and various videos you made that impart us GOOD knowledge...

Great channel! Jeff, a RU-vid video, "Trowel and Error," by NTCA, recommends putting the trowel grooves straight across the shortest dimension of each tile. This allows maximum air to escape. The video uses large transparent glass tiles to show how this provides superior adhesion. What do you think?

@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 7 лет назад
Definitely. the offset is related to the curve in the tile, not the substrate. spacers are good, make sure you wet the concrete as you go for a good bond. I like the 1/4 by 3/8 but that depends on how flat the floor is.

Trowel size is 100% dependent on the tile size. Most tile mfg will recommend a trowel size for each tile they sell. In general, larger tiles require wider/deeper trowels to compensate for subfloor irregularities over a greater distance.

you said you normally don't use spacers . ..how do you guarantee uniform spaces ? I am having my bathroom tiled , and I don't think spacers were used because some tiles have no space in between . Don't see how I can mention this to contractor seeing that tile is set.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 7 лет назад
after thousands of square feet of tile laid i am quite comfortable not using spacers. Depending on the tile being installed it may not be possible to have uniform spaces. all ceramics are baked different sizes so the tile set has to make adjustments along the way. If the tile is RECTIFIED porcelain than there is no excuse. Talk to your contractor and have him explain there may be a good reason.

Good thing the invented "leveling" systems to help with those bowed planks...I'm surprised you didn't install Ditra 1st. I'm not digging a floor right outside a shower area not being protected by a membrane. ;)
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 8 лет назад
Thanks for the comment. Leveling systems were designed for large tile not to correct the bow in stone. The use of an uncoupling membrane such as ditra is an option clients can choose if they are willing to pay the extra for it. In this case the client did the demo and wanted to keep costs down. This was a demonstration of how to install this type of tile in this situation, there is no doubt that there is a better option. In a perfect world all bathroom floors would be stripped to original sub-floor, have 1/2 inch plywood added , floor leveler if needed and then ditra. Then we would install rectified porcelain so that we wouldn't have to deal with this bowed problem. If a client wants a 10 year floor there is nothing wrong with that. It could however be much better.

+Ottawa Design and Build Renovations You can only do what the customer will pay for, within limits. Sometimes it's best to gently decline
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 8 лет назад
The purpose of this video is to demonstrate how to install tile in this environment. We are completely within code and have every expectation that this floor will last for more than 10 years. Are there better installations on the market? YES. Is there anything wrong with what was done here? NO. The reality is. There are no new houses being built with ditra or uncoupling membrane. Therefore renovating with these high quality products is simply a personal choice and doesn't add to the value of your home. The only time I recommend ditra as a necessity is when a client is investing in high quality materials and is using a heated flooring program. Otherwise demanding the use of this system has no value unless you are creating a waterproof floor. But that is another video for another day. Keep watching!
@dpoison2
@dpoison2 7 лет назад
installing tile over a wood subfloor without cement backer or ditra, especially in a wet area like a bathroom is just asking for trouble. it's not a question of if, but rather when will it surface.
@Plumpplumberbalding
@Plumpplumberbalding 7 лет назад
RS STW Sure, that's a fact. But, when the customer won't pay the extra, and what's worse, your competitors won't use something like ditra......perhaps it's best to let that job go.

The first thing you see when you enter a room is the threshold. All tile layouts should start at the doorway and work into the room. This typically requires two trips to tile however quality always takes precedence over speed. Nothing worse than cut tiles or slivers at the entranceway.

@HomeRenoVisionDIY

Use non-modified cement for exterior applications. Install on a day when it is not too hot and wet the concrete porch as you tile. if you can cover the tile work with a light plastic over night. the longer the cement stays wet the stronger it will be. Cheers!

As a professional tile installer I would never lay tile on plywood. Use leveling clips, schluter dita and you will have a perfect floor everytime. I am the one that gets called to fix floors, showers and Backsplashes done by guys that use those dated methods. If the customer doesn't want to pay to do it right, don't do it.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 7 лет назад
Although I can appreciate the fact that new installation products can be helpful, I would never go as far as to insult the skills of a real tile setter by suggesting everything installed using the direct bond technique is inadequate. Too many times people want to assert that there is only one way to do something this is incorrect. There are 3 ways to do something. There is a 5 yr fix a 20 year fix and a 40 year fix. New homes are built with a combination of 5 and 20 and 40 yr construction techniques. It is important to recognize your own housing market and which style of renovation meets and r exceeds the market and where your value is found. In this video I was demonstrating the 20 yr technique for home owners in that market. We have videos in production that demonstrate the 40 yr method as well. The truth is over the course of 40 years they cost about the same.

I agree man , don’t put your name on anything that won’t last your expectations, Plank tile always has a bow . Use leveling clips for the kickers. I don’t understand why people tile on wood , have you ever poured a cement pad ? You use 2x4 for a form for a reason . Cause it doesn’t stick!!! Same applies to tile floors . Use wedi or cement board at least . Your also literally getting no coverage on that tile when it’s installed , you need to always trowel in one direction and move the tile back and for the at least and inch to collapse the air gaps . There’s a reason trowels are made that way . Listen man this is no insult or anything . It’s constructive criticism it’s the only way people learn . Like you said there’s more then one way to do things but as far as that tile goes that way is the wrong way . It’s your job to inform the customer of why your doing things the way you are and I’m sure if you showed them how it’s suppose to be done they would spend the extra cash so things last. I’m out.

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I'm new to the channel and I was shocked that you didn't use ditra or any other anti-fracture membrane. That's been my experience and training for the last 18 years. I did once use the metal mesh in a mortar bed and it's been fine for years. I've also seen 4x4 tiles set on 1/4 inch plywood grouted with mortar and none of it was cracked. Long story short, I guess there are many ways to set tile. Thanks for your work.

I can't believe the use of that random chalk line you made. I know it's a small area. I know everyone works differently. Ppl trust their methods. I would have just use half inch. Then just smear on the back. Set a straight line of tiles as a height guidance. Them use a level and at the end put a normal tile and a spacer over it to set it as guidance. So it's not level but straight. Idk. Different ideas
