in this video i will show you the differences between a fcr 39 carb and a factory drz400 bsr 36mm carb. i will also be showing you how to remove and install you new fcr 39 carb from thumpertalk on your drz. fell free to ask question in the comment section below. my appolgies for the poor camera work, wind noise at times and loud radio. i performed this in my garage at 1 am and slightly drunk!

Thanks for the video, wish I would have found it before I installed my carb though. I watched a couple others and got by. I have a 2003 KLX400R. It doesn’t have the vacuum petcock. My exhaust is also stock. To get more room to install the cables and the plastic dust cover I removed the silencer and the crank case breather box, that helped a ton and wasn’t that much work. I ground some plastic off the plastic dust cover to clearance it. I installed the carb then the plastic piece between the carb and the air box, then the crank case breather and the silencer. Only rode it a couple miles around the neighborhood but it ran great. Waiting on wheel bearings, seals and new tires. Thanks again.

Hey sure wish I’d seen this BEFORE I pulled my FCR39 out of the bike today. Throttle cables were both shot, so I needed a total replace. What a day I had!! Thanks for doing this. It will give me something to do tomorrow.

Did you make this video just for me? I am a visual learner and your step by step is easy to follow and you didn't spit out too much jargon. You explained everything you did thoroughly and made it easy for me, who knows nothing about carbs or what is on my bike, really well.

thanks! i to am a visual learner, i can read and read about something and retain almost nothing unless i have a hands on knowledge already. but if you show me something or how it works, it like coming in and doing the majority of the puzzle for me and i can breeze through it. im making a condensed version of this soon.

Thanks so much man, this was super helpful. Guys, don't forget to switch out the boot connected to the engine. I saw the one in the kit, but thought it was just an extra, so I spent a lot of time and frame paint trying to get the carb to fit in. I probably skipped that part in the video. I used a screwdriver for the "cringe" part you mentioned. It dawned on me afterward that a plastic bicycle tire lever would be really good for the application, and probably some of the other finessing.

I know this is old but for others watching this still you can take the bottom bolts out of the sub frame and loosen the top one and swing it out a bit for a ton of clearance. You can also un hook the hoses and wires and swing it all the way up out of the way with the air box too. The rear subframe is removable I dont know why ppl over look it and think everything has to come out the front main frame lol. Any way hope this helps someone

Video?
@Aircraft_Fabricator
@Aircraft_Fabricator 2 года назад
@@darthorpheus All you need to do its remove the top subframe bolt that is just under the rear of the fuel tank... From there you can apply light pressure on the tail and separate the subframe.... then place the subframe bolt back into the frame hole and allow the sub to rest against it and it will prevent it from moving forward while you are working.... That will give you clearance enough to work with and not have to fight it as hard. Its still going to be a bitch to put back in and get the boots on but its not nearly as bad as it is with the subframe bolted on.
@Aircraft_Fabricator
@Aircraft_Fabricator 2 года назад
Also MAKE SURE you do NOT apply too much pressure on the subframe... just enough to slide the bolt back into the frame and allow the sub to rest against the bolt.... You risk damaging the rear brake reservior if you put too much pressure on the tail when separating the frames. So be careful of that and it should be simple and much easier.

Tell me about it lol. There was in fact a change made back in 2015 and the air jet is no longer removed. You will need to verify your carb's build date to make absolutely sure that it is a newer model first.

Great video brother. I've referred back to this many times in my carb upgrade. Sadly I still have a massive vacuum leak to issue with my pilot jet and it's starting to push me over edge. Wont run well off choke. I've had the carb out of the bike and on bench 5 times and still no luck. If you can offer any additional tips I would be grateful. On the TPS I actually do not have one so that plate is open. Any chance that can be a leak? I dont know what else to check. I've sprayed it down looking for leaks and cant find any. Typical carb set: 160 main, 45 pilot. 3x3, aftermarket pipe. It's a used carb but I've gone through it and replaced everything and focussed cleaning on pilot jet. Sent carb to buddy and it ran fine on his bike so I'm just stumped. Again, any additional thoughts would be awesome. Thanks.

Brilliant vid but it misses the "money shot" - actually getting the FCR within the frame! Instead, there's a jump-cut at 20:30. It's easy to get to almost but horrid getting to done, unless...you realize that almost no force is needed! Follow @Rocco's excellent advice up to 20:30, including dismounting the reg/rec and getting the boot way out of the way. (Pro tip: use a tire iron.) Then treat getting the FCR in place as a puzzle and not a wresting match. Go in from the bottom per @Rocco. It'll take a little force at the end but not much. Again, this video is gold.

Breather box will come right out if you drop remove the back half of the exhaust. Remove the air box boot completely. And install the front of the boot onto the carb first. Disassemble from the airbox boot from the airbox, and assemble moving forward. Drop the rear tailpipe. Remove the breather box. Remove the throttle cables, carb will come right out. Reverse process and install carb and work towards the back of the bike putting the airbox boot onto the airbox last before putting the bodywork back on. As a professional wrench you are doing what we like to call "working real hard to try to prevent doing more work". Those parts can be off way quicker than you can fight with it trying to prevent doing so.

AWESOME video. Thanks for super detailed info. Extremely helpful. I was thinking to get that for 2006 DRZ400S, but wasn't sure of its performance and installation headaches. What preferences you gained in mid-top end? I notice it's very quick response on bleeping the throttle, but over all performance VS. The stock carb with JDJetting kit installed on it.. This is an old video, maybe I’ll get some feedback, maybe not. But I have this exact carb and when the clutch is pulled in (regardless of the gear I’m in) and I twist the hell out of the throttle really fast, it’ll bog and more often than not just stall. Any particular idea what it could be? I’d prefer to not get a whole carb rebuild kit and re do everything lol. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!!!

If youre able to plate MX bikes in your state you are one lucky dude. Here in oregon we cant so enduros or supermotos are way over priced. People wanting 4-6k for a drz400s-sm. Its shitty when a bike like that costs as much as an extremely nice naked, sport, or cruiser bike. I got extremely lucky a few years ago and found a 2003 Husaberg 450 converted supermoto for $2600. I immediately sold my DRZ400sm after experiencing the Husaberg.. 34hp on a heavy bike makes these DRZs an overpriced turd. The one thing these DRZs have going for them is the reliability but anyone who can take 30 min each month to change oil and check valves could make any bike last a long time. The only DRZ I came across that I thought had enough performance had an Athena Big Bore 530 Kit, the 41mm FCR, and Hot cams but At the end of the day he still couldnt touch compete with my bike. So for the $7500 he had into the bike, it was still heavier, slower, less agile, and bigger. Sorry for the rant. I just hate how my state doesnt allow us to Plate MX bikes. lol

You aint kiddin that bitch was a pain to install. Couple tricks I learned was to use a pair of pliers, spread the pliers apart and stick the handles (rubber part) above and below the air boot. This will allow you to shove the air boot back evenly, rotate carb with left hand while pushing the pliers back against the boot. Use a dab of motor oil around the rear boot lip to help it slip onto the carb. Can also remove subframe bolt and push it down for a little extra room to work with.

There was a time where I could spit this out, but that time has come and gone sadly. I would say the best way would be to look up the drz fcr39 kit and see what one comes supplied there. If that doesn't help, you could always goes with a non vacuum operated petcock, seeing as that is what the vac line is for. But that has its own issues.

+411kieran ohkay show down there tex lol. 1. tune set up: -stock timing -stage 2 hot cams -mrd exhaust -434 cw bigbore kit - .010 base gasket 2. jetting: - 155 main jet for cool weather/ 150 for warm weather -45 piolt jet (year round) -2 1/2 turns on mixture screw -emr needle at stock TT clip position 3. i removed the piolt air jet but it feels and sounds like i need to re-install a 150 paj if you can down the road, sell that yoshi rs-2 to a unsuspecting drz rider and move to a mrd. i sold my yoshi for 300 and bought a used mrd for 325.00. the top end power and mid range improvment made modulating the throttle during 3rd gear wheelies a breeze! i intend to upgrade mine as i can afford it. i'm worried that the whole thing will be an experiment... or a pick and choose from a sea of opinions type experience... how does one know what jets to use with which carbs or which headers, or cranks, or cams, or bores, etc etc? is it all just an experiment? or is there a way to knowingly make each change? Can one put on a big bore without a carb upgrade? Or will it run but starve for air? Is there a book?
@Roccoo
@Roccoo 8 лет назад
there is a overall formula but for the most part it goes like this. 3x3 mod & jd jet kit exhuast fcr upgrade big bore kit cams this is what 90%of people do when they want to mod one of these critters, in that order. when you order the jd kit they will give direction on what you need to use in the kit. then when you move to the fcr carb, if you buy the TT kit, it will come pre jetted for a broad set up. but for what it is, it will serve a host of mods until you get the bb kit. and actually then you will need to decrease your main jet size a bit from the increased air flow from the bb kit.

Your vid is a great help for my next "try to fit a FCR", thanks man. My doubt is only the pair valve, because I got a euro model and is not exactly the same.

Hey Rocco, Thanks for the video Question for you... I have the FCR carb, 3x3 mod and full Yosh pipe. My bike runs just fine at idle, acceleration and deceleration is great but when I run at constant speed (ie: 50 km/h or whatever constant speed), I feel a bogging of the engine. Ever experienced that issue?

Its probably running a bit lean. Pull the choke out while it's hesitating and if it runs better it's lean. Raise the needle up a notch to richen. Or secondly, you could try the next bigger main jet. IF it runs worse with choke on, lower the needle a notch or 2.

where would i find a boot for the carb? my buddy's boot popped off and it was also for the stock carburator. It was an extremly tight fit and is really dry rubber, nearly rock.

My first place I would look it Ebay, of coarse. but assuming you have already done that, ThumperTalk classifieds/ posting a ISO post about it there would pan out at some point. Luckily Suki did little to change much of anything on the drz'r in the last... decade so pretty much anything 03 or newer should work for the job. With out knowing the finer details of the build (model year, factory carb, mods), this is as best an answer as I can give.

Hello thank you so much for this informing video. My 2018 DRZ 400s doesn’t have that port in the head. I have installed the FCR carb and no where to put that second line for the stock petcock I noticed the bike runs fine on prime. But if i put on “on” it starves for gas after a minute or so. My kit didn’t come with this, i did have the vacuum port nipple installed on the card when purchased to retain stock petcok. Any help would be great

Take out one of the bolts in the inlet manifold and replace it with vacuum adapter fitting as shown in this vid. You can make an adapter by cutting the thread off an M8 bolt and drilling a small hole concentrically down the bolt. Use a soft grade bolt to aid drilling. Grind one end smaller to accept the vacuum hose. Put a nut and some sealer on the thread and install it in the head.
