I have a yard hydrant that is not working and needs to be replaced. I did a search on youtube and Low and Behold, My friend Martin and DIY My way appeared! It doesn't surprise me that you showed up. You seem to have a knack for making videos that I don't even know that I need yet. Though I had a basic understanding what to do, having seen you do it, increases my comfort level a great deal. Thanks again for another great video!

Ahh, now I know why I get a little bit of dirty looking water when first opening the valve! I have one of these set up as a temporary for our custom home until the construction is complete. The guy who installed it along with our half mile of water line obviously didn’t cover the drain hole like you did, or put it in a gravel bed since it’s only a temporary installation. I was getting a little concerned about that, wondering why there was still some dirt in the pipe! 😂 Now it makes sense! 😁

Another great video Martin! I learned something today, I didn't know that the hydrants had a drain hole at the bottom. I knew that the "valve" was at the bottom, but not that it was self draining.

Thanks, MD H! Yes, it’s a neat design and works great as long as you have a good gravel bed for it to drain into. It’s cool that you can do maintenance on it just by removing the faucet head. Thanks for watching!

Duct tape? No way! It can't be possible on your channel! Lol! I like the way you prepare everything so it will work perfectly! The T-post, the fabric, the crushed stones, etc. You make sure it will last a lifetime! How deep can frost reach in GA? I thought you were not having freezing temperatures!!! Thanks for sharing Martin!
@DIYMyWay

Thanks, Joe! Hey duct tape has it’s place even on my channel! LOL. It does freeze here but not often. The frost line here is said to be 24” but that was a pre global warming number. Winters have been much milder for at least 15 years so it’s probably more like 12” to 18”. Thanks for watching!

Nice! I'm looking at installing two of these in the next month or so. I've watched 3 other installation videos, and by far I prefer your method. Some people were putting an inverted bucket down in the hole, others were leaving the T-post exposed above ground (which I don't really want), and one was using a 2x4. My biggest concern is making sure there's no or very little flex in the riser pipe so it doesn't open up the hole with use. The T-post and the wire should take care of that, although I'm actually inclined to use a pair of stainless steel U-bolts. My friend has one at his house that's concreted in to place, and while it's VERY stable, if he ever has to clean out the weep hole or fix a leak.... Well, it'll be a real pain :)

How's she goin'? Nice job Martin!!! Those hydrants are some nice eh!!! I don't have any, but often though they would be handy to have. You did a great job of the installation. I like the tip of covering the riser drain with landscape fabric. BTW your clematis looks beautiful!! Take care!!

Great instructional video! Maybe I missed it......did you put some caution tape above the waterline to warn future 'diggers' there is a waterline below? Also with non-metal piping, running a wire with this tape will allow metal detectors to find the waterline again. I'm old school, so maybe they don't use this technique anymore.
@DIYMyWay
@DIYMyWay 4 года назад
Thanks! No I didn’t because I won’t forget where the water line is because it’s in the same trench as the power. I’ll make a diagram of where the utilities run on the property for future owners. Your “old school” techniques are still just as valuable in this “new school” era we’re living in. Thanks for watching!

Fantastic install! Love the purple Climatis on the fence, too. I wonder if I could use one of these with my IBC tote with just gravity pressure? I may have to experiment with that. I need to get a faucet from the tote to the raised bed with the piping underground so I can cut the pasture. Nice vid! Thanks for sharing.
@DIYMyWay
@DIYMyWay 4 года назад
Thanks, Pilgrim! If your IBC tote is sufficiently higher that the faucet head would be, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. How much fall do you have between the bottom of the IBC tote and about 27” above ground at the garden beds? Thanks for watching!

Thank you. I subscribed to your channel. Can you install the faucet directly in your main water line or do you need to tee off from your main water line and install this?
@DIYMyWay
@DIYMyWay 2 года назад
Thanks for subscribing, Jeff! There’s no reason you couldn’t tap into you main water line. I tapped into the water line going to my shop, which taps off the main line going to house. Thanks for watching!

if i leave my hydrant open with a timer connected - will the drain line on the hydrant constantly be draining water ?

If you are on city or county water, then yes. If you have a well with an electric pump, you’d need a backup generator. Thanks for watching!
