Here in North Dakota, that water line has to be buried at least six feet down to prevent freezing. A job for a backhoe. Dont feel bad about the ongoing repairs and upgrades. The wife and I bought out farm property over 20 years ago. We are still fixing, repairing and updating. It never ends. Worth every dime and every hour spent. Keep up the good work!

Been surveying several videos on the mechanics, repair and servicing of this style hydrant. This is by far the best of all three categories! And I feel you, brother, on the amateurism by the previous residents/builders!! Our simple 600 sq ft slab n’ steel studio/cabin is the configuration that allows one, even on a strict budget, to do everything well with high quality components and materials. Alas, while it looks nice, every aspect of the construction is infected with former owner’s son-in-laws half-tailed instinct!! The joker’s trade-craft skills are precisely reflected in his personality-totally flat! So, thanks for the fellowship and intelligence in following failure!

I follow Red Poppy Ranch too. He installed several yard hydrants and I think he set them in 5 gallon buckets filled with gravel. Didn't know why when I watched but it must have been for the weephole drain.

We live in ia, I suspected last spring that ours was leaking. I had a guy come out, he said no I probably left it on and that's why all the water around the base... now it's December and it's obviously leaking. Higher water bill and frozen water all around the spigot. Guess I'll be digging it up myself next spring. Thanks for all this info.

Thank you. I have one of those. The problem I had this winter was was the inter pipe wouldn't go down. Then I couldn't get any water. Every winter I have a hard time lifting and lowering the handle. This year I needed two hands to turn it on then that's when my problem started. I was told to use PB on it. I used WB40 and that didn't work, but PB worked. Now I need to adjust it because it leaks. Thank you for the video now I know how to fix that.

Ground hydrants, can be a pain. I have a choice of a couple brands here in VA. The price difference is small. Heat tape, I wrap mine around the pipe then use pipe insulation, I had water leaking up from the pipe underneath the handle that was an use, parts were necessary. I just replaced mine. Good job with the info, I suspect there are many people who don't have ground hydrants or know how to fix them.

Boy oh boy do I know about heat tape and shoddy home repairs. I was taught it was cheaper to do right the first time.

What is the issue with the hydrant if when you pull the handle all the way up to obtain full water pressure but the handles keeps falling down slightly, therefore reducing the water pressure? Mine drops down and I have to get someone else to hold it up and opened in order to get full pressure. The handle will not stay up and fully open on its own. Any advice would be helpful......thanking you in advance.

FYI: Some hydrants are non potabale which means not fit for human consumption because of the lead leaching from the brass parts. So if it's not good for people I wouldn't think it would be to good for animals either.

I like when it gets cold out so I can see how your seasons went. I don't get to watch these videos very much through spring,summer and most of fall due to farming and going to work! I was curious where you order chickens through other than the mail or tractor supply? Considering I only live about roughly 50 miles away! I have 35 hens but I would like to raise some meat chickens next summer!

would it make sense to fill a large water container (that has a hose and a valve) and haul it around with a tractor to each animal waterer?

I hope you went deep enough with that heat tape. That generator installation job looks kinda scary. If you can, go down deeper with the new water pipe on the INSIDE of your house and go through the foundation with a star drill. You'll have less chance of a freeze up that way. Is that a living or storage space on the inside? Hydrolic cement should seal up the hole well, plus there are coatings that can be applied to the outside to make sure of a good seal. What causes these spigots to all of a sudden stop working? It has been installed for 9 years and just stopped letting water out when opened. A second one further down the line works fine. I left he first one open while I was using the second one, when the water started running out of the first one. I am baffled.

Just curious don't you have a basement? Can't you just go out through the basement wall below 4' and run it to the barn? It looks like you have a pretty good ground water have you thought of sand points to get water from in pastors, it's a lot easier than digging trenches.

It's at corner of the house has a basement or even a crawl space I think you would be much better off punching a line through the concrete below the frost line and getting that line in the house more direct than coming up to go into the house it might even be worth it if there is no basement under there to run the line around to where you have access to your basement to be able to punch through the concrete into a climate controlled area of the house

Hi, thanks for the video! I have a question for you. My barn hydrant like yours has been leaking, so I was going to try my hand at repairing it myself. We installed it about 15 yrs ago. It began leaking about 2 years ago lol. So I have been shutting it off at the house after each use. This has become a pain in the butt. So it's time I fix it myself. I always find handy videos online, like yours, to do most anything I can't figure out on my own. Anyway, could mine possibly just need that set screw adjusted? Is this something that can change and need adjustment over time? Or is this something that only needs done when first installed? It would be nice if it is just the set screw, as I don't know what brand I have. I see nothing written on the head. So I'm not sure how easy it is going to be to find a rebuild kit for it. I have watched a couple videos on installing a rebuild kit, looks direct enough, haha, but it would be great if just an adjustment would fix my problem.

I cant believe those uninsulated boiler lines were not even in a field tile. That's some mickey mouse B.S.
