Got a 71 supa bug and have similar issue bug just making a click sound not turning over so going to get me a hard start relay and give it a crack hopefully will work but what a great VDO

Yes hard start relays work great, also clean the starter motor nice and shiny were it meets the clutch housing. I also run a cable from the starter motor bolt straight back to the battery earth, it will fly over.

Hey guys, great video and information. I like to use shrink tube on female disconnect terminals when they are powered by 12 or 6 volts. Especially if they are not fused.

Great video. Gary, I’m liking the look of the drainage tubing you have set up under the deck lid of your bug. Not that you need it living in Texas!!! Looking at the underside of the rear luggage well and inner rear wings, that car hasn’t seen anywhere near as much rain as our cars here do in the uk! Keep up the work, gents! Ben 🇬🇧

Fun bonus - you can use this as a safe easy way to add secondary switches, such as a starter switch in the engine bay. And now I'm wondering about making a wireless remote start; one radio controlled relay for the coil, another for the starter, and you can fire up the engine without going outside first. Would be silly with the choke on early air cooleds but for a late fuely bug or bus that doesn't need throttle input....

A hard start relay was one of the first things I did on MY 1968 1500 VW Beetle... then a relay for the starter motor too.... most important...

The relay basically uses a low amperage circuit to close a high amperage circuit. It takes the loading off that 60 year old ignition switch ignition switch especially the 1500 and later style ones that go into everything. They are weaker than the early 6volt ones. So this is a good idea and simple to install. A lot of modern cars have them as standard.

Great show ! We did somewhat the same thing with a Ford ( sorry yes Ford ) 6volt starter solenoid which worked great and also had a button at the bottom to have a remote starter 🤪

You can ground to the bolt on the starter or run it up through the firewall to the battery

Hi I have a problem with my beetle- it doesn’t start on its own but if I give it a booster with jumper cables with another battery it starts! I just changed the generator thinking it was that but it’s still not starting on it’s own! What do you think it is????? The starter or regulator?

Will this work on a 1972 Volkswagen beetle? At the moment I turn the key, lights come on and I get nothing. The battery was diagnosed as good as well as the alternator.

Question, what’s the difference between running the original German heater boxes vs. plastic tubing that you took out between the heater pipe and the engine exit heater valve pipe?

Hard start relay is a great addition! I run a semi auto stick starter on my 4 speed. Has more torque than a 4 speeed starter, spins it over so much nicer.

If memory serves me, you need a full 30 amps to the starter, running through the ignition switch to get the engine to turn over. Fairly easy to not have enough amperage on these old cars.

Hay guys. I think you guys are great. I have a 76 conv. And my wife has a 70 westy.we would love to buy at least 2 VW Life stickers, and do you have any sew or iron on patches. My first VW was a 1960 in 68 my junior year in high school.Drafted, in 1970, went to Germany in78 to 81 were we owned several. 3 bugs 2 buses 1 was rh. drive 1 giah a type 3 and a sketch jag. I retired from the army in 1989 with 100 % disability and didn’t get a nother until 2016. I am new to this computer stuff so hope this works.

Too bad the solenoids on VW and 60-70's General Motors are wired so poorly that they take so much amperage to engage. That alone increases the chance that the slightest switch/wiring problem causes trouble. All my Beetles had the "silent starter" problem where the idiot lights dimmed (showing that current was going to the starter solenoid) but there was not any sound at all. I have installed these relays for years which is the easy way but bending the fork so the plunger is a fraction further into the solenoid housing works too. I found this silent starter problem on Beetles only 6 years old so I find that "old wiring " has much at all to do with the problem. If a relay doesn't help (rare) then you have no choice but to bend the fork a tiny bit. Just don't waste money on a different starter when it is repairable. I can't believe after 53 years working on VW that no one else has thought to modify the starter a little. Even a local VW dealer 50 years ago claimed they never heard of this problem. Not much help there either.

Thank you thank you! Is it possible to mount this relay kit under the back seat? I live in rainy (not so much right now!) Oregon and don’t want to mount it by the starter because of all of the moisture. Not a good time push starting your bug to escape wildfires... true story!

Dan Nielson agreed. We’ve been putting them inside for decades. Resistance and corrosion affect relays too. I’ve had to replace a few. I’m currently using one rated for 20 amps in a bus.

@ How To Fix It. You probably fixed your VW by now but when you had the original silent starter problem you may have noticed that your oil and gen. lights dimmed when you turned your ig. switch to start. That dimming is proof that current is going to the starter solenoid. Using a test light is only doing what your idiot lights have already indicated. 😉

Just figured out I think I need this for my bus. After driving my bus for an hour in 95 degree weather the other day it wouldn't start (it wouldn't do anything but fuel pump would turn on and lights turned on) It finally started after a few hours. Does this sound like I need one? I still need to have everything checked to make sure there's no other issues, loose wires, bad connections, etc. Any more hard start relays available if I need one?

If the wires weren't behind the tar boards, it would be easy to run new hots. The relay is a great fix untill you re-wire the car. It should be called the easy start relay. Cheers!

Had my bug rewired. The wiring looked like a crows nest on drugs. Recently had a relay added on the starter. From the standing the battery went bad.

There has virtually been millions of dollars wasted on unneeded parts and repairs because of this issue. Every aircooled VW will need a starting relay eventually. Just as rust never sleeps, neither does resistance.
