Troubleshooting a starter problem results in making and installing a hard start relay.
I make this from just an off the shelf relay, no need to buy a special one made for VWs. The relay I used was from Online LED Store and has a 30A fuse built in.

I did that to my 1968 bug before the car got totaled last month from a deer. i was able to mount the relay on the package tray as illustrated in the vw beetle restoration handbook as i had a bosch starter in it it kept whirring not engaging the ring gear on the flywheel as i put in a powermaster Denso gear reduction starter in it purchased from Summit Racing Equipment and its a very reliable starter. as ill be doing the same on my next bug a hard start relay.

I had planned originally on putting it near the battery. But this way is so much more convenient as it's all wired right at the starter instead of running new wires around. I was worried about water getting in there or something, but I drove it during the recent rains here in SoCal and no problems at all. Of course I keep a spare in the glovebox... ;)

Yeah, I'm trying to find the sweet spot between entertaining edits and getting the actual info out. My recent stuff I think has gone the other way. The pendulum swings... hah!

They should call this relay the "silent starter" relay as "hard start" infers too many other symptoms. All my Beetles had silent starters because current was going to the solenoid, dimming the idiot lights, but not operating the solenoid. I don't remember any that just clicked unless the solenoid was shot. Too bad VW and 50-70's General Motors did such a poor marginal job wiring their solenoids, needing excess current, so the slightest change in wiring, switches and connections caused starting trouble. I do add relays to Beetles but at times bend (only a fraction!! ) the fork to allow the plunger to be in the solenoid housing further. This allows the magnetic attraction to pull the plunger in. GM had far fewer problems this way but bending the fork was the best way on them all things considered.

Just put all new connectors at both ends of all of the heavy wires. Eliminate the bottle necks. Done. Solved all my electrical probs. No relay needed.

Just out of interest, why not dispense with the relay connector and connect directly up to the relay. By doing this you eliminate a failure mode in as much as you have reduced the amount of connections by half.

Will this Relay work on my 1966 VW Bug sedan. My car is a 6 volt. Please let me know if this relay works or do you have one for it. Thanks

You'll need a 6v relay. A 12v relay MAY work, but I wouldn't count on it. 6v relays are out there, even on Amazon.

@@mrobvious5892 One lead to the fat cable on the starter, the other to ground. The body of the starter is fine. If you see at least 12v, then put the leads on the ignition wire (the small one) and ground. Have someone turn the key. If you see 12v, then your starter is the problem. If you see less than 12v but saw more than 12v on the fat cable, you can benefit from the relay. Replace 12v with 6v if you have an older car that hasn't been converted to 12v. Methods are the same.

@@mrobvious5892 You can get a spark from a lot less than 12v. But you need that 12v to trigger the solenoid. A relay as I did will get you the juice needed. Assuming you get the results from your testing as I described.
