How To Install A Pool Cue Joint Pin

I have been asked by a few people my process in installing the joint pins into my pool cue and I thought instead of having to explain my process each and every time I would just make a quick video on it. Now I would like to point out that a lot of guys do thread their pins into the butt section and that is also a great way to do this process. That being said I have just had way more luck with the none threaded process in getting the pins perfectly straight.

''I would like to point out that a lot of guys do thread their pins into the butt section and that is also a great way to do this process'' all the real cue makers tap them because its really the only right way to do this. i have never before seen anyone just push it in untapped hole for very obvious reasons, you are the first.

Hey JPayne I have watched all of your videos. I know you have been busy but I was wondering when you was going to put out the video you said you were going to do on how you made the pressure chamber you do your cues in. Would love the info on that... Thanks!!!!

I'm going to make my wife a walking stick with a horizontal handle on top and it's probably going to be about the diameter of a pool stick in the middle where it will join(my mini lathe doesn't have an extension so I'm limited to what length I can turn). I haven't got the details figured out yet on exactly how I'm going to do it but I'll probably taper it some from the middle towards the bottom. Do you think a pool stick joint like you installed in this video would be a good and strong option or do you know if there's a better way? Also, that stick looked like it had blue or purple florescent epoxy embedded into it which looks really nice, is that epoxy that's been filled into voids or is it just an outside finish or ??? I'd like to try to make something similar. Also, do you mind telling me what kind of wood was used to make that stick? Thanks for the video 👍

I mess around with cue making part time and I highly recommend you start threading your joints. Maple swells and contracts quite a bit, especially if a cue is left in the trunk. That movement will lead to the wood pulling away from the epoxy. The last thing you want for your business is a cue or multiple cues showing up in a billiard forum because the joint let go a year or two down the road.

Okay so actually you proved my point more on why it would possibly be detrimental even in the long run it to thread in the joint pin. 41 a mini hi into makers do not threaten their joint pins I look into it a lot as I was learning to make cues secondly if people are worried about wood swelling and movement it goes the same way if you cut threads and then a thread in that insert. This would mean that a portion of the threads could swell or move at different rates than another section causing the pain to actually shift in one specific location and actually become out of true. The third part is I know a lot of people don't think about it but plain and simple if you're leaving your cues in a vehicle constantly then to be honest in my opinion you don't have a whole lot of room to complain when things go wrong at all. Kind of like the idea of someone slamming their cue on the table and then getting mad when it breaks. Do you mistreat things are do not put take proper care of them no matter how well they are built or what they're made out of they eventually will take a damaged or fail. I do appreciate the comment and for watching tho thank you.

@@jpaynewoodworking7510 the problem with your joint alignment theory is the mechanical bond of the threads and screwing the pin in all the way and giving it a slight bit of torque. There is absolutely no mechanical advantage the a chemical bond has over a chemical+mechanical bond. I'm just saying I've seen it happen in jump cues where the butt wasn't threaded. And while I don't do it myself many people leave there sticks in the car. I have friends whole leave there schons in the car. Leaving a cue in the car might lead to shaft warpage at the most, it shouldn't lead to a possible mechanical failure in the butt. While it might be easier to do it that way there's no long term advantage to not threading the joint pin.

@@rodricjohnson5950 ive left my schons in car trunk for last 20 years with no issues, this includes winters in chicago and new mexico, and summers in florida and arizona.

@@donh1537 schon uses extremely dry wood plus there's a little luck in involved with too. I actually know a few people in Florida who leave there schons in the car and some are straight and some aren't. I doubt he's using schon quality of wood on the inside of cues

Great work . Question: what type of lathe is that ? As in; how the cue is chucked at the middle/end of the cue . Does the cue go through the motor. My normal wood lathe isn’t built anything like that mechanically speaking . Realizing that this question is a lot more difficult to explain than I expected.. if any of that makes sense I’d appreciate a little help in what to call a lathe like that .. thanks -Nick scott

Why not thread it for more stability
@jpaynewoodworking7510
@jpaynewoodworking7510 2 года назад
Some makes do but also threading and also lead to more room for the pin to install slightly out of line. This is the process iv had the most success with getting the pin perfectly straight. Been doing this a while now and never had a pin lossen up. Jb weld has a breaking strength of like 3000 psi so if your tightening the shaft that much your gonna damage the shaft eventually

No way! I want mine threaded in. But you are using a sloppy lathe more than.0005 out.
@ericsternberg938
@ericsternberg938 2 года назад
I think you have an extra 0 or two in your runout measurement. .0005 would be .013mm out. That would be perfectly acceptable even at the spindle. The three jaw chuck would multiply that number but it isn't going to bring it close to being an issue. Look, I thread too. I don't live thread simply because of the time that it takes so set up the assembly. I step drill and thread as I have for 20+ years. It adds stability as well as reducing the chance for rattle from the epoxy breaking away over time through vibration. I agree 100% with that part. Regarding the lathe, the Hightower lathe is perfectly fine for this operation. A big bench lathe is certainly an upgrade but to call it "sloppy" is a misnomer. In comparison to a 6K bench lathe, sure it will not be as accurate because of bearings as well as simple weight. But let's not a product that has been out there turning out cues and repairing cues for 30 years. JPayne, 1. Keep up the learning and experimenting. We wouldn't have ever made short spliced points if it weren't so "radical's" experimenting with offsetting a tailstock and using a router. 2. Consider trying some experiments (if you haven't done so already) with threaded vs unthreaded over time and see where you land. Definitely thread your A-Joint as the potential for rattle will increase dramatically with no threads to seat to. Good luck!

In curious where you are getting my supposed runout measurements? Plz tell me sir where a single person on this earth would see any difference with even double your imagined number of run out at .001. That is one one one thousands! And never had a single pin pull loose. Tha ks for watching though.
