Ask This Old House mason Mark McCullough installs a front walkway for a homeowner using natural stone.

Time: 5-6 hours
Cost: $2000
Skill Level: Moderate to Expert
Tools:
Safety glasses
Hearing protection
Shovel
Pickaxe
Wheelbarrow
Compactor
Trowel
Rubber mallet
Level
Masonry hammer
Shopping List:
Natural stone steppers
Spray paint
Stone pack material (crushed stone and stone dust)
Stone dust
Plastic edging
Steps:
1. Before doing any project that requires digging, always contact your utility locating service to identify the location of water lines, gas lines, etc.
2. Use spray paint or some other type of marker to determine where the path will go to help make digging easier.
3. Use a pick axe to loosen the soil in between the lines of the new walkway. Then, use a shovel to dig out the path. Depending on the thickness of the stone, plan to dig down about 6-8”. For easy removal, dump the soil into a wheelbarrow.
4. Use a compactor to get the base as solid as possible. These can be rented at most home centers. A hand tamper would also work, but multiple steps in this process will require compacting, so it’s worth it to rent the compactor. Use hearing protection while running the compactor.
5. Once the walkway is packed down, add two inches or so of stone pack and compact that as well.
6. Add a couple more inches of stone pack on top of that and compact it.
7. Mix up the stone dust in the wheelbarrow with water.
8. Scoop the stone dust mixture onto the walkway in small sections at a time. Smooth it out with a trowel.
9. Place the stepping stones in a logical order on top of the stone dust. Wiggle the stones as low as possible to ensure the stone dust fills in the gaps underneath the stone as well. A rubber mallet and a level should be used to make sure the stones are placed evenly.
10. Continue this process all the way across the walkway. If a stone feels like a close fit but isn’t quite right, try cutting it with the back end of a masonry hammer.
11. Secure plastic edging around both sides of the walkway. They come with stakes that can be hammered easily into the ground.
Resources:
Because natural stone is a naturally-occurring substance, it will not always be possible to match other natural stone in a landscape. Mark suggests identifying the nearest stone and masonry yards first to see if they have what you’re looking for.
The natural stone stepper Mark used is called a “New York Paver”, which he got from Cavicchio Greenhouses (www.cavicchio.com/ ).
The plastic edging is Vigoro No-Dig Landscape Edging Kit, and is found at most home centers.
The compacter Mark used can be rented from most home centers. The other materials Mark used for this job, including the mallet and edging can also be found at the home center.
Expert assistance with this segment was provided by MJM Masonry (mjmmasonry.com/ ).

Ninety percent of the time when I see these home addition segments and someone has to dig they're working through the softest, smoothest, and most powdery soil you can imagine. Come out to Georgia and dig through our "Georgia clay" where it's generally rock hard and you're hitting a stone or three every shovel full.

Seriously! How?: Making it unnecessarily complicated. Here in Germany there's one code for all 16 states, so an electrician could work everywhere in the whole country. I really thought making things the complicated way is a german special atribute, but in this case the USA are King... Baily Doggett: The UK are a bit special with the ring circuits for the outlet circuits, but the rest is the same as here in Germany. The ring circuits are not a bad thing, but it's making the things a bit more complicated to get the ring symetric and balanced (resistance). Only we use different cables with a double sheathing and our earth wires are fully insulated (no sleeves required) and they have always the same dimension as the other wires, afaik in twin-and-earth cables the earth conductor is a bit smaller than the others.
@RichieD_21
@RichieD_21 5 лет назад
@@Marcel_Germann true but "states" in Germany are nothing like states in the U.S. In America states are they're own governments, making their own laws, taxes, etc. That's why we are called the United STATES of America, with the idea that each state is it's own entity but United under the stars and stripes. In recent times we have strayed away from that with an increasingly growing central government but the founders envisioned a place where state governments were even more powerful than the federal central government.
@Marcel_Germann
@Marcel_Germann 5 лет назад
Here the states have their own governments and parlaments too. But federal law is always above state law. Here in the state of Hesse the death penalty is still in the constitution for major crimes, but in the federal constitution it's withdrawn. Some things are a matter of state, for example the police. The federal police is only responsible for train stations and airports. Every state has its own police with own equipment like sidearms for example which differ in most cases. Even the laws for law enforcement are different. The states have all ministers which you can find in the federal level, except a secretary of state. And there's a federal control instance called the "Bundesrat" (federal council) which are delegates of the states. They are the last instance to approve federal laws, or disapprove them...so they have the last word on laws the "Bundesregierung" release. They have to vote for all federal laws, how many votes they have depends on the number of citizens living in that state. The thing is electrical installations are not regulated by the state here or by any law, they are created by independant parties which are professionals. In the laws you'll find a passage that electrical installations must be "state-of-the-art" defined in regulations and codes, and this state-of-the-art is defined by the VDE for electrical installations. The VDE is an independant testing organisation for all matters of electric installations, materials and tools which are used there. It's the largest organisation of that kind in Europe and it is comparable to your UL. It's the same thing with plumbing, their regulations are released by the DVGW. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VDE_e.V. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutscher_Verein_des_Gas-_und_Wasserfaches
