Great video, I'm a XC junkie building my first gravel bike. This helps bigtime. Believe it or not, you CAN re use the Shimano barbs. I was in a bind, had to get bike done on a Sunday with bike shops closed. Needed a barb, so I took a propane torch and MELTED a brake hose, releasing the barb. I cleaned it all up with Scotchbrite & it works perfectly 2 seasons later. BAM! 😀
This video and the info is super valuable. I'm building a Domane with Hydros and know very little as to what and how all the small parts do. You assumed I know nothing, which is true. I will also watch the brake bleed video as well. My intimidation level is now reduced, I can do this.
When assembling brakes, spray bottles of isopropyl alcohol are your friends :) . When all done, spray liberally over your entire bars etc. and get rid of all the excess fluid that's spilled.
I am upgrading a hybrid bike with flat bars to a gravel bike with drop bars. One thing I found the hard way is that shimano doesn’t ship new levered with the yellow inserts/hose bolt/ possibly olive anymore. I went through 500 mm of brake hose and a $150 shift/brake lever before I realized I needed a specific hose nut for the Tiagra levers. Now I’m running BH59 flanges on the caliper side but BH90 flanges on the lever side of the hose. Thanks for the tutorial.
Yeah, the next time I build a bike I will probably do that. My maintenance videos pretty much cover every aspect of the build, but seeing in one big video would be pretty cool, although it would take a long time to make!
installing the inner barb piece is easier with a tool like the Jagwire Needle Driver Press-in Tool. That avoids have to hammer in the barbs. Using the press-in tool is less error-prone for ordinary mortals compared with hammering them in.
Very usefull video now i can tackle the installation of some shimano grx levers myself thank you ! What do you have do at calipers ? (I bought used calipers with no hoses)
My new GRX brakes came with connector insert already installed and at the end of this hose than came from caliper, there is some kind of a rubber inside connector insert so the oil will not came of as I guess. If I want to shorten the cable, I will use new connector insert included - simple as that. However if I want to use the cable lenght as it is (without shortening it), what about this connector insert with rubber sealing, Shimano manuals just tells to insert the brake hose in the brake hose connection port, nothing about this strange connector insert with rubber sealing. Have you encountered such thing?
I think if you want to use the cable length as it is you would pull out the stopper and then insert the hose. There will also be a stopper in the lever itself. The olive is usually already installed inside the lever Chances are you still need to do a bleed afterwards.
I'm in the same situation and I cannot understand whether I need to replace the connector with the one supplied. Did you manage to install the cable without shortening and how?
@@vuvirt I guess it must be replace everytime. My hose is too long anyway so I'm going to cut it. Still analyzing the lenght I need. Don't cut it until you put the hose thru your frame.
@@btcycle8316 thanks! I thought that original connector should get pierced somehow inside the lever. At least this is the conclusion that I came up with after reading the Shimano manual. But I’m not sure and I don’t know how to check it unless someone can confirm it. Maybe I’ll have to cut the hose just in case too anyway.
In the bike industry, Olives are the little brass rings that go on the end of a hydraulic brake hose that get crushed into the hose to make a seal. Ferrules are the plastic pieces that go on the end of derailer and mechanical brake cables. Apologies if you already know this but just want to make sure the terms were clear
@@ClintGibbs I totally understand! The bicycle industry called housing and cable ends "ferrules" when they should have just called them housing and or cable ends. Now we have hydraulics on bicycles that use "ferrules", but we can't call them that because we have been calling housing and cable ends ferrules. Instead of a terminology "reset" where we call housing and cable ends-ends, and ferrules-ferrules, they decided to call ferrules "olives"- something you eat and put in martinis. Its just funny. Kind of like clipless shoes that actually clip in. But then again it comes down to wrong terminology. Back in the day they called "strap in" pedals "clip in" pedals, so people began to equate strap pedals as clip pedals. When they started making actual clip in pedals they need to differentiate from the strap in pedal, so they called them clipless pedals. At any rate I really like your video!
