We use a threshold pan like this because it provides a 1/2" dam on the rear. On southern exposures or when wind is prevalent this is the only way to keep water out even with the nailing fin on the bottom. Notice that we only caulked the rear dam. This allows any water that gets under the door to be drained. Where we don't use a pan we do wrap the threshold and/or sill with a membrane and then down the sides. If you use this method you need to caulk the back side of the door or have a raised piece to create a dam. You won't find many videos that show pans like this installed because it's cheaper to do the membrane and pans are not required by code but they are indispensable in coastal areas or where there is high wind and rain. Another note. We don't use Blue Skin anymore because of some compatibility issues and when using galvanized treated metal flashing in this manner and there is no exposed metal when done I would venture to say that this metal will last a lifetime. In another post where we use these in coastal areas we use stainless. It costs more but will never break down so if that's a concern use stainless but either way having a dam on the rear prevents any water from getting under the door and getting to framing or the subfloor. Our door supplier has now got onboard and provides these pans for an additional cost. Thanks for the response.
The music is at the end. Endless Paradise. We agree it's not the best music but what people don't understand is that we don't have a lot of choices and don't do a lot of videos. There is a limited number of music tracks that you can use that is not copyrighted. We post to Facebook too and if it's not approved they will reject it. We're still learning the ropes. Thanks for the comment.
+Paul B (AnimalExplorer) . The diagonal measurement checks for square. We check this first because if the door was manufactured out of square then it can't be used. Sometimes we can have the door re-glazed to fix this but either way it delays the installation. We had checked this door prior to removing the existing door because otherwise we would have to wait for a new door to arrive and the customer would not be too happy. Most of the time doors are okay but when they're not it's impossible to install them correctly. This works for both windows and doors. Thanks for watching.
yellward Silicone and latex. However any quality window and door sealant would work. As for the flashing you can get these custom made at any of your local sheet metal shop! If you would like for me to tell you how we as a company like them made I would be more than willing to help you out! Thanks for the question.
+charles Oglesby Hi Charles, great video and one of best patio door installation jobs I've seen. I'd be interested in hearing about how your company makes these sill pans if you're willing to share. Thanks!
We have these pans custom made from our sheet metal shop. They run us around $65 for a 6 foot door using galvanized metal. At the coast we use stainless which is about 4 times that cost.
Julien Melissas Would you elaborate on what you mean all I see is myself applying caulking. This 6' door opening was perfectly flat and level. If you're talking about the spacer in the door frame that is to bring up the height of the door for the Tile that was installed in the dining room!
There is some things we left out or didn't show on this video but overall this is the proper way to install a sliding door or window with a nailing flange. (See American Architectural Manufacturers Association - AAMA Standards) The membrane we use and the threshold pan we always install especially on sides that get a lot of rain and wind or in coastal areas. If someone is just sticking the door in and relying on caulking or nails only they will leak and rot out the jams and threshold over time. Most handymen or do it yourself'rs leave out these crucial steps. To answer your question directly though this installation cost the homeowner $325 plus the material cost for the door, membrane and pan. Thanks for watching.
Harvey Ellis Sorry for the music but i wanted to to have some kind of music and i figured that elevator music would work the best with no lyrics. What music would you recommend?! Thanks for your feedback :)
+charles Oglesby It's very difficult to get the music right for a video. If in doubt, leave it out. It didn't bother me, but my dog liked the first segment and immediately started softly singing along, so I was focused on encouraging her. The second segment was a little distracting with the percussion thing goin on. I think most would rather hear what you were doing and why, than irrelevant music.
