Handyman, I'm just a homeowner, but your videos give me courage to do simple modifications to my house that I would struggle with otherwise. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos for us!

Good video, although you are probably a "trained" electrician i would still include that its ALWAYS a good idea to turn the power off to the work place you are in before attempting to replace or add receptacles to the area.

YES!!! Additionally, granted it's a 5-year-old video, but he should use a water-tight conduit connector for a weather seal and tension relief. The hole he made in the brick looked big enough, he just...didn't do it. Also, he failed to caulk around the box where it sits against the brick.

I just turned 20 this year and I’ve been doing drywall and painting since I was 14. Your videos are super Interesting to watch and I’m planning to start my own business before this year is over since I’m gonna be attending Aviation college I need to pay my bills the way I know how to. Great videos and very motivating for me.

Thanks for the full process! I thought I had to recess the box in the brick and was totally overwhelmed. Thanks for this clarification, I now got the job done within an hour

I tried recessing at 1st, the box kept sliding out after I tried cementing it in due to pressure from the cables coming in. Wish I'd watched this vid 1st.

Question??. How do I cover up a 1 by 2 inch hole at bottom of outlet recepticale
@ericlocke8119
@ericlocke8119 6 лет назад
If you drill out the whole plugs on the inside of the weatherproof box and use tapcon screws it looks better. Plus caulk the holes where your fitting goesinto the wall.

This was just the video I have been looking for. I’m going to be running a series of 3 double gang outlets around the exterior of my house for Low voltage lighting, Christmas lights and for power near my shed. Wiring wasn’t an issue. It’s all straight forward, but nowhere could I find how the wire/box was mounted. Specifically, if conduit is needed to go through the block wall. Just the wire and those box jammies in the back and a liberal application of caulking. Would you suggest a silicone caulk around the box as well?

I never turn off the power either I do lighted sign installs and servicing as part of my handyman and sign services and just hate the pain of finding where the power is I carry a tic tester also just to not get a surprise. After so many years of doing this type of work you just work with it hot....one exception for me is in wet areas . You do good work I enjoy your videos

Dmitry you must have Zero experience in home improvement and residential electrical. Rubber gloves? You must be joking. This isn't a power line!
@danbailey96
@danbailey96 6 лет назад
The reply by Dmitry is typical of people Non knowledgeable of the processes of construction or electrical especially basic household electrical current sometimes it takes longer to find and turn off the circuit then the job takes and on commercial buildings there can be many critical circuits that must stay active so I usually don’t take a chance of tripping one of those.

You should install 3 in boards between joists to staple cable to. Where I’m from the inspectors do not allow you to have wire between joists without wood or a solid surface underneath for safety reasons. Not sure if it’s true in a crawl space

is that a 15 amp gfci plug? in the same application could i use a 20 amp gfci plug ( and not touch the panel)
@leecarraher
@leecarraher Год назад
I'm guessing your breaker and wire (12-2 or greater) would need to match if you want the full 20 amps. Otherwise a higher rated GFI will work just the breaker will pop at 15 amps instead of 20.
@garykidd4468
@garykidd4468 6 лет назад
I do it just like you do, but wait, I take out 1/2 of a brick and then recess the box so that it is flush with the wall, and then drill 2 holes in the back of the box and screw right to the rimjoist, You drilled one hole for the wire and 2 holes for the box tab screws and with one more hole you could have had 1/2 a brick out. But really I did this on the back of my house and once on the front of my house and then when I added another box on the front I cheaped out and did what you did and surface mounted it behind a bush, where no one sees it but my wife who reminds me every time she sees it that I should have took 1/2 a brick out and done it right. But I'm an electrician so I don't get to cut corners at home. But this was informative and well done none the less, Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you and yours.

Question: GFCI outlet is great and all, but is the 12/2 going into the junction box a homerun from the panel? If not, is the outdoor GFCI receptacle the first one hooked connected on the line in?
@TheHandyman1
@TheHandyman1 6 лет назад
The only outlet that needs to be protected is the one outside.
@antcaruso3465
@antcaruso3465 6 лет назад
Appreciate the response, but I missing something. Doesn't seem GFI protected as its wired from what i see.
@tempesttube
@tempesttube Год назад
@@antcaruso3465 I know this is old, but this is a misconception. The devices that will be plugged into the receptacle have to be GFCI protected, so this protection can come from the receptacle. The circuit itself does not need to be protected.

I realize you are very versed in electrical and the code, is that cover ok with local codes rather than an "in-use" cover? I know that your type of cover can be used but only in certain areas of a building and under local code. Not criticizing, just wondering. Also the correct word is "wasting", not "waisting"...sorry, that's just me. Love your videos. Got great content and good production. I really don't need to see how every screw, bolt and wire nut are attached.
@TheHandyman1
@TheHandyman1 6 лет назад
I didn't catch that misspelling. It was 1 in the morning when I was editing the video I'm sure I will get more comments about it. Its an approved exterior outlet cover. I wasn't to concerned with the exact code location stuff.
