That "extra piece" is a buffer tube extension to work with the A2 stock, which is a little longer than the A1 stock. If you were using an A1 stock, you would leave that off.

This will be helping me with my custom build. Already have a couple videos saved for when I eventually have enough money to get everything I'd need, and the one thing I was completely missing was knowledge on how to install an A2 stock.

Will an A1 or A2 stock fit on an ar-10 lower? I'm working on a custom ar-10 build, but I want red wooden furniture on my lower. Any advice?
@jaylinnell5251
@jaylinnell5251 Месяц назад
@@johnkirkpatrick9131 it should work just fine, and I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work, but if you already have a mil-spec(plastic) A1 or A2 stock, I’d suggest testing it out using that version, make sure it works, then swap over to the wood stock. Of course, the A2 stock will need a spacer and a longer screw than the A1, but if you already have all of that, then you should be fine. Let me know how it goes, too. I’m always interested in hearing other people’s experiences.

All my ARs sport an A1 or A2-length fixed stock now. First and foremost, no beard hair pulling! Secondly, they have a handy storage compartment for spare bolts, batteries, cleaning kits, etc. And finally, their solid construction inspires confidence. I would recommend putting a little blue Loctite in the receiver threads just for added security.
@HaroldTheSloth
@HaroldTheSloth 11 месяцев назад
I got curious and tried unscrewing one of the buffer tubes from my rifles, and I advise AGAINST putting blue Loctite on the threads. I destroyed the buffer tube trying to get it off. The spec calls for some grease on the threads and 35-39 ft-lbs of torque, and I have now done that to all my rifles. If you want to use blue Loctite, do it on the threads of the buttstock screw, not the receiver threads!

Them stocks ain’t solid. I don’t know how many of them shatter every BCT class on the bayonet range. But, I like the correct stock because I like the correct stock. I don’t like 16” barrels, I call a rifle a carbine at 20” so M16a2 was already a carbine. But what is not attempted to explain is after that but or maybe spacer is dropped in the stock, what holds it to the buffer tube? Is the back of the buffer tube threaded and the screw threading into it? Also, there shouldn’t be anything in the stock but a cleaning kit. I get some people may want a “survival kit” or whatever but the void in an A2 stock is designed only for the issued cleaning kit in it’s canvas roll.

@@alexcalvert5779What are yall calling beards? Mine is a medium beard and it doesn’t get caught in any stocks, unless it’s too short for me and I just sweep it to the sude

Some little tips... Degrease the threads of the buffer tube and lower receiver before assembly and use a drop of blue Loctite on the threads of both the tube and receiver. Put a small amount of gun grease on the takedown pin, takedown pin detent and detent spring. Put a small amount of gun grease on the buffer retainer and spring and on the buffer spring and buffer also.

I've read both sides - torq vs blue loctite . having installed a Magpul MOE stock not using loctite on the tube was an issue - when attempting removing the stock the buffer tube turned when unscrewing the stock !!! after some #### i removed the stock and tube, cleaned up the threads , applied "A LITTLE" dab of Blue left if over night and with a "lot" of effort the stock separated. PS the ar armorer's tool i have doesn't fit buffer tube at the end- had to revert to simular wrench approach.
@bobstevens7028
@bobstevens7028 8 месяцев назад
@@billz4795 This happened to me on my A2 factory stock. When I went to take the stock off by undoing the screw, the buffer tube started backing out with the stock still stuck to the buffer tube. After you got the stock and buffer tube off the receiver, how did you get the stock to break free from the buffer tube before re-assembling with Loctite at the buffer tube/receiver joint ? Or did you just put the loctite on the threads with the stock still connected to the buffer tube and then install the tube into the receiver, let it sit, and then the screw separated the stock from the buffer tube when you tried to turn the screw the next day?
@billz4795
@billz4795 8 месяцев назад
@@bobstevens7028 After I got both off and cleaned off the buffer tube threads and applying blue loctite to the treads , reinstalled. Applied a liberal amount of oil to the stock screw. Waited overnight and luckily with some effort the stock screw broke loose not the buffer tube, and the we had separation. Needed to use a wrench to get the buffer tube off.

I installed the same UTG A2 stock on my Smith and Wesson Ar15 Scout 2. Be sure to slather moly grease all over the length of the buffer spring. Slides easier and no “Twang or Boing” sound when firing.

Can anyone help I have an Aero 308 - a fixed stock set up. I took it out the other day to sight in, but it kept having feeding issues All my friends recommended switching to collapsible - which I don't want. This is the second AR 308 that I have been having the same issue with. I want to fix the problem before I give up. I am tired of there not being any resources/solutions for the 308 because everyone wants to focus on AR15s.

Does the extended buffer and spring change your cycling compared to the old spring and buffer? Would you need to change your gas system to a new one if you have a carbine upper?

Yes! You will need to test and possibly tune your gun.

A better tip than using a spray gun oil is to use grease. Seriously just pick up some bearing grease and some nitrile gloves. You definitely want to use grease on your buffer and buffer tube because you don’t want to get a face full of oil when you first fire also, you don’t wanna ruin your clothes.

The extra part that goes on the end of the buffer tube is the A2 "buffer tube extension". (the A1 was just that much shorter so they increased the overall length and added an extension and longer screw to accommodate).
