How to Install an Adjustable Shower Arm to Raise or Lower the Height of Your Shower Head

Is your shower head mounted way too low, making showers super frustrating?
That’s probably because your shower arm pipe is located very low on your shower wall….or maybe you’re just a very tall person. Either way, we have the answer to your problem. You need an adjustable shower arm.

This part attaches between your shower arm pipe and shower head. That means you don’t have to do any tricky plumbing or drill holes in your wall!
The adjustable shower arm is equipped with interlocking gears that tighten and loosen to either raise or lower the height of your shower head. So, yes, this is also a great product for those that are shorter and need easier access to the showerhead.
In this video, I'm going to explain the features of the HammerHead Showers 12" or 16” adjustable height shower arm extension, install the part and show you how it works with water running through it.
All you need is:
- Adjustable Shower Arm Extension
- Teflon Thread Seal Tape (Included with HammerHead Showers kit)
- Adjustable Wrench or Pliers
- Cloth or Rag

The HammerHead Showers 12” or 16" adjustable shower arms are a universal sizes so they not only connect to all shower arm pipes but work with all shower head types including: hand held shower heads, rainfall shower heads, fixed shower heads and many more!
Made from solid brass, it's built to last. You'll also find that our part has an independently moving tightening nut. That means you can tighten the shower arm all the way down and still get it exactly lined up. If you’ve had issued with fixed tightening nuts causing off-center installations, you’ll know what I mean.

The absolute most important thing, is the kind of extender. Most cheaper extenders out don't have a free floating nut to attach to the pipe. Which means, if it doesn't, you're most likely gonna end up tightening the cheaper models into a position that isn't vertical, but horizontal. Defeating the whole purpose

the extention bar didn't align with the shower arm..it landed in about the 8 o'clock position. idk if my extention bar is different than yours tho they appear the same

It could be that your arm doesn’t have an independently spinning female tightening nut which will cause this to happen. Ours does.

my keeps tilting left and right, like my shower head is to heavy or something. If i balance it perfectly at the top it will stay but as soon as i move it even slightly gravity makes it spin down counter clockwise. Any idea what that is?

When adjusting the wingnuts, you will need to get the gears locked up in place. There is a round fitting on the other side of the wingnut that should be snapped all the way in place. After which you use the wingnut to tighten again.

Will this work with a handheld showerhead w/a hose, or is it better for regular showerheads? I need to use the hose type to rinse my hair but I can barely reach it.

You can replace the pipe that goes in to the wall too with a longer and higher one but I guess there is some slight risk in doing that in case something behind the wall breaks.

Hi! I definitely understand. It depends on how the shower arm was attached to the pipes. For example, if plumber's putty or other kinds of adhesives were used.

That is a great question! If this is a showerfilter you should not need any adapters as everything should be in the 1/2 inch standard. Everything should be compatible with one another.

So I just need to know if I need to measure the fitting on my shower head, and get the required adapter? I hope you can let me know

What if I turn that original shower head arm lose one half turn so that it’s angled upward for a shower head I’m installing? Am I risking leaks just with this half turn lose to have it angled upward?

There's always a risk of leaks if a component is not fully tightened down. In this case, I would suggest using a heavy amount of thread seal tape on the end of the shower arm going into the wall. That way you can mitigate the chances of any leaks while still being able to have the shower arm pipe pointing up. Do your best to thread the shower arm as far into the wall without damaging the internal plumbing. The screwdriver technique outlined in our video "How to Change A Shower Arm and Flange In 5 Minutes" will help out big time.

How much weight can you put on the end of the shower exension? A 12 inch shower head stay okay?

Hi. Our Shower Arm can hold up to 4 kgs (8.8 lbs) of weight. It perfectly supports your 12-inch shower arm without a problem. We've designed the locking gears to be very deep so that they don't wear out. That said, it's extremely important that you make sure that they are fully locked into place and both ends of the connector are flush before tightening down the wingnut. You should always make sure that the arm is securely fastened before use. Thanks for your question!

I wonder why these pipes are always so low to begin with. You taped clockwise correctly on the top fitting, but you wrapped counter clockwise when you did the lower one. Always wrap tape in the direction of tightening for the best fit.

You are correct, the second wrapping of the Teflon Tape was done counter clockwise which is incorrect. Thanks for picking that out.

In regards to the piece that independently spins on the shower arm you have, I have an arm extender where that piece does not independently spin. It feels like I'm relying on luck to get my shower arm and head to line up properly. Any advice in that situation?

Hi Em! Thank you for reaching out. In this case, I would definitely suggest a new shower arm extender. Especially since it would be difficult to adjust and leave it jut as you want. Otherwise, it is going to be very difficult to adjust.

It should work, as the Aquasana uses the same 1/2 inch shower pipe. I haven't tried that specific set up myself. The only thing I'm worried is if the weight would impact long term in the structural stability of the plastic male thread part.

According to google.. "When you begin the application, start the tape on the second thread and apply clockwise. Doing so will help prevent cross threading and ensure tape does not end up inside the pipe. Once you have your proper placement, keep the tape tight and continue wrapping three times."

These arms suck. They are supposed to to hold whatever position you set by tightening the wingnuts at each end, but they wear out quickly and your shower head starts moving down. You tighten them again after resetting the shower head height, and hope it at least holds long enough to finish your shower. I've bought a few of them over years, each time hoping it was just me and this time it is going to work, but I wind up removing them and throwing them away.
