How to Install Car Headliner - Part 1 (Bow-Type) 1970 Chevelle

This video will show you how to remove the old headliner, mark the position of the rods used to hold up the headliner, remove the metal brackets used to hold up the headliner in the front, back and sides, mark the holes for the coat hanger, seat belts, and rear view mirror.
Next step is installing the rods into the headliner, installing the headliner in the car, installing a new rear deck, clipping the headliner to the front and back. Then doing the same to the sides.
The key thing with the installation is to fasten the headliner to the metal brackets to fasten it to the ceiling of the car, then go to the front, to the back, and the sides several times and keep on tightening it to remove the wrinkles. Be patient because when you tighten one area, another area develops a wrinkle so you have to continue to stretch the headliner.
Sorry this is a long video but I wanted to cover everything so that you would have the confidence to do it yourself. I did it in my driveway but it did take me several days. I also did not remove the front and rear windshields.

Mr. Lis, You have done a masterful job with all the videos on the Chevelle restoration, I’ve learned a lot with a lot remaining to accomplish. Other RU-vidres can learn a lot from your videos, good camera work, commentary and to the point directions. Thank you Sir,

Thanks It takes me a long time to make these movies. I try to condense it down to as short as I can but leave every detail so someone with no experience can do these jobs. I feel that I should share as much knowledge about fixing cars as I can. Your local repair shop is not going to show anyone. I am a Universe person - what does around, comes around. If you help someone get what they want, Someday, someone, somewhere, somehow, will help you get what you want. I don't do this for the money because Google does not pay that much based on my time to do this.

Hi David I got fantastic news I got my rea back seat recovered and I have the bottom to do after my forearms heal from the bruises. Man it takes muscles for these muscle cars huh? I m so happy going to be taking her/Monte Carlo in to the transmission shop for a leak repair and potentially rebuild it as I would like it to be fresh and no worries.

Never have to do it again. Talk about muscles, try rebuilding the entire front suspension. Now that I did everything, I just change oil and add gas. Like a regular car but a little older and more fun to drive.

Is it just me or does it seem he cares more for the Chevelle than the Mercedes? Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining that he's using his Mercedes as a work table, I'm just impressed that he's a true gear head. Only a true gear head and classic car enthusiast would use an upper end automobile as a work bench. LOL. Good video.

I have done 3 headliners, one in a 69 Chevelle and one in a 68 Lemans, and also a 1965 Lemans. The 65 was easy compared to the others. I wanted to do them myself, because guys get around $400-$500 labor to do them. The 69 Chevelle was my first, that took around 15-20 hours total. My Lemans took me about 8-10 hours. The 65 Lemans probably took about 6 hours. Its good to do them on a warm day outside so the material is warm and pliable. The thing I found was take your time, do not be in a hurry at all. I used small alligator clips on my cars, they worked really well for holding material in place. After doing 3 of them myself, I can totally see charging someone $500! I have 2 more to do...a 1968 Cutlass, and another 69 Chevelle. Seems whenever you buy an old car, the headliner always needs replacing.

@davidlis6709 3 года назад
You can do it. Measure 3 time and cut once. You have to use those clips to stretch the material. Let the material settle in and stretch again. I did not do this in one day. Spraying glue goes all over the place.

In 1995, I was given a present of a "semi-project" 1970 Monte Carlo for passing my driver's license test on the first try, and getting good (enough) grades... Within a few months of that, my best friend- to this day- helped me rip out the disgusting, falling apart, stinky, original headliner. Unfortunately us two naive young teens also threw away the headliner rods (bows). (Yes they were rusty, but we had no idea how hard they were to going to be to find, pre-internet.) I grew up from a mid-teen to a man daily driving the Monte for almost 15 years. I was always embarrassed of my naked, headliner-less ceiling. I either never had the money, or never had the time to replace the headliner and bows. I am now, because of the time off work due to lockdown, able to have both the time and money to FINALLY, after owning the vehicle 25 years, able to replace the headliner and bows. Thank you for showing me how.
@davidlis6709
@davidlis6709 4 года назад
You can order the rods and headliner from National Parts Depot or Original Parts Group. I had a 70 Monte Carlo when I went to college. I loved the car. Then I did something stupid and upgrade to a 1973. What a piece of sh_t car that was. Tons of pollution equipment on the engine and the car doors would fall down when you opened them. I scared of breaking he door glass when closing them in the cold weather because the glass would hit the metal guide where the door seal was located. Take you time, measure 3 time and cut once. Takes longer than you think especially when it is your first time.

I’m close to installing the headliner/sail panels in my 67 GTO. The bow installation went just fine. Currently I have the binder clips around the perimeter and will soon start the gluing process. I see you brush on the cement rather than spray it; this makes more sense to me.
@davidlis6709
@davidlis6709 6 лет назад
If you spray, it goes all over the place. I just clean the brush off with gas and the can glue is cheaper. And you thought this was so hard you would never be able to do it.

Any tips for figuring out which holes the rods should go in? My 63 Chevy 2 had no headliner or rods so I had to replace. Trying to get everything in right now and the rods don’t wanna stay in place. I get it in the holes and when I move to the next the other wants to move. Also having a heck of a time getting the rear rod in the right place. Like the headliner’d too tight or something.
@davidlis6709
@davidlis6709 Год назад
I believe that there are 3 holes on the ceiling on each side for the rods. Where they go for best fit, I don't know, I believe each car is different. So for starters, look at my video and start with the holes that I used. Start with the center rod because it snaps into place to the ceiling, then move forward, then do the back. To tight, I made relief cuts on the very edges on each side of the rods. Look at video again. Cut a little at a time because once you cut, that is it. Take your time or you will get frustrated. When you do, stop, and come back another time. These are tricky.

@davidlis6709
@davidlis6709 4 года назад
@@jjjones518 I don't think you can pop them back in because I am just guessing (not being able to see it) that the plastic clips are broken and need to be replaced. All mine broke, to old. In video, 12:40, I installed new clips, they just go in the hole and twist but you cannot get access without lowering the headliner. What condition is your headliner? Maybe you can lower the headliner on the edges where the headliner meets the side window? You would have to take down the metal strip by the front windshield, and the rubber/plastic strip that helps hold the headliner in place. Then carefully remove/lower maybe 1 foot of headliner enough so you can get you hand and arm in there and remove the broken clips and install new ones, both sides. Then you can feel where the rod is and press the rod back into the clips. Get some contact cement, Home Depot, and stretch is glue it back in place. Let me know.
