How to Install a Car Headliner - Part 2 (Bow-Type) 1970 Chevelle

This video will show you how to stretch the headline from front to back and side to side. It also shows how to trim off the excess headliner and add the plastic molding to hold the headliner in place, install the dome light, coat hanger, seat belts, sun visors and rear view mirror.
Next step is installing new material on the old cardboard sail fins or rear back side panels, installing the roof rails, and rubber seal around the side windows.
The key thing with the installation is to fasten the headliner to the metal brackets that fasten it to the ceiling of the car, then go to the front, to the back, and the sides several times and keep on tightening it to remove the wrinkles. Be patient because when you tighten one area, another area develops a wrinkle so you have to continue to stretch the headliner.
Sorry this is a long video but I wanted to cover everything so that you would have the confidence to do it yourself. I did it in my driveway but it did take me several days. I also did not remove the front and rear windshields.

Just a little tip from someone who has done a few. After pulling down the visors, dome light and rear view mirror, re-insert the mounting screws. The headliner fabric will still stretch over them, and it is a lot easier to feel screws under the material than to find the holes for the screws. Then just slit a little over the head, and the components will easily line up and mount. Save that "exploratory surgery!"

Thanks for the vid. Its the best on RU-vid. There are others and they are pros but yours is better because they edit out so much and u show pretty much whole thing...even the mistakes which is great. I just got mine in and it went well. Have done ear muffs yet but headliner looks like yours did b4 you finished so that gives me hope. Mine pretty flat but do have some pretty noticeable wrinkles back at the sail panel turn downs on both sides. My hope is ear muffs will pull and tighten and hide those a bit then i can steam or hair dryer the rest to minimize them more, possibly even get rid of them. I hope anyway, but without this video, id have taken to the shop and pd 400$

The sail panel area is the hardest. I go to a lot of car shows and 95% of the cars have little wrinkles. That includes the cars professionally done. The hardest thing it getting started.

@davidlis6709
@davidlis6709 5 лет назад
My car has some kind of isolation material covered in black tar so it was hard to get the contact cement to stick. It did after a few applications but not that good. So it has a few wrinkles back there but it seem that no one looks. Why - my guess is that how many people do it themselves. The sail panel covers 95% of it. When I go to these car shows I look at all the little things. Like the window wipers - It seems like on my car and a lot of 70 Chevelles that the hood rubs on the top on the window wiper arm where it connects to the splined post that drives the wiper. There is not enough clearance. If I raise the hood, then it does not match the fender. I believe the factory did not design it for enough clearance. What do you want for 1970. So now you have 2 things to look for.
@michaelcollins1899
@michaelcollins1899 5 лет назад
@@davidlis6709 yeah my 72 also has black paper tar stuff. I ripped it all out and put all new hush matt to upgrade heat and sound. Also, my 72 rubbed the wiper lol in the past, its not back on car but my plan was to see if i can adjust it out.

its an old headlier. I cant afford a new one lol. Im also stripping the bondo because someone before me coated the whole car in 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick bondo. The car barely has dents or rust. Im not even joking the whole car is coated.They kind of tried to align the doors with bondo or something.... Il upload some pics to my channel later.
@davidlis6709
@davidlis6709 6 лет назад
I was lucky because it just had surface rust on the hood, and trunk. The car sat in a storage container for 22 years before I got it so it had no rust on the bottom and no one tried to do anything with it. I did not take the body off the frame because it still had all the original undercoating. It did not run because the motor spun 2 bearings and leaked oil from the motor, transmission, and rear end. It turned out to be a 4 year project but I did not work on it all the time. So now I just drive it. It also has A/C from the factory.
@PolecatCreekGarage

the bondo is all gone and i found that the car is mostly fine except for i need a new right quarter. It was wrecked on that quarter at one point. @@PolecatCreekGarage Looks professional because it is. Who is going to tell? Next time you go to these classic car shows, look in the rear corners and you will see everyone has a hard time because of the way it was designed. Not good fastening methods. what is the black stuff behind the new sail panels how thick is it what is it made of thanks
@davidlis6709
@davidlis6709 6 лет назад
This panel is made of black tar paper about 1/2 inch thick. It is not sticky. It is some kind of filler material. The issue is trying to get the material to stick to the black tar material. It sticks but not good enough to stretch the material and get a good hold. After the hot summer, I noticed the headliner material has some slack in it. I talked to this upholstery shop that does headliners and he never heard of that before. He said that the ones he has seen have a clip that snaps to the sail panels. I know that I am the first one to change the headliner in this car. On day I will take the sail panels off and re due it with different glue. I go to a lot of car shows and look at all the 69 and 70 Chevelles, and I notice that they 90% of them have lose material around the sail panels. And I know that these people paid to have it done.
