I've seen other videos and starter pieces were nailed all the way around edges. Also nailing shingles, there is a keep out zone to prevent leaks; paying especially attention when shingle pieces are cut. Love this video vs. others because you pay more attention to measurements. thank you

Yes, some roofers put the starter shingles all the way around, and that is fine. As far as where to nail, dimensional shingles there is usually a nail line to go by. On three tab I nail about 3/4 of an inch above the notch in the tab.

An advantage of buying starter shingles is that they have the tar strip low near the roof edge so when the shingle seals down, the wind won't be blowing up the bottom of the shingle. I've had to come back and put small galvanized box nails into the lower part of the shingles before because the wind did catch the first row of tabs and was blowing underneath them, because we used regular shingles as starter singles as shown @ 6:32 here. We did not cut off the tabs and put the shingle the other way .

Makes sense. I have never had to go back on a roof I installed. But, good point.

Good point. For some reason the starter shingles prescribed for my Certainteed dimensional shingles are super expensive. I think l’ll go with 3-tab starters and seal the things myself - only because my house gets hammered by autumn winds.

I learned a lot from this video. Watched the whole thing and only had one question and it was not part of what you were doing on this one. Which is best regarding the drip rail. On top of the felt or under the felt. I've seen both. Thanks you for taking the time to share your knowledge with others and also thanks to the nice lady doing the recording and helping with the chalk lines.

Well, I wasn't single handed, my wife helps me. Best help ever. She used to nail too, but anymore she usually lays the shingles out as I nail and chalking lines. She also helps with getting the shingles on the roof and tearing the old off. I think it might have taken us a week. It is a pretty big roof too.

2019 is already time for plastic felt, not for tar paper, regardless of thickness. Seal vertical overlaps with a dab of rubber cement. This is a simple intersecting roof,, no much worries, but if you have a slow pitched valley, it is critical to seal first the deck, let a heavy rain pour, check for leaks, and then go ahead with the shingles. Otherwise, all materials and labor go to waste, even if a residual leak occurs. The one who suggested you turn one day job into 3 is ..., you know what. Good that you take time to do a precise job.

@@doityourselfdenniscom we still run asphalt felt paper, 15 or 30 depending on the job.Synthetic is okay in my opinion, but if you run the asphalt paper in the proper ways and tack it down right ( we use slap staplers, button caps if the customer prefers it ). The Ice and water up the valley is key, ive seen many places where we've torn valleys had nothing and all you see is rusty nails and damaged decking. Keep up the excellent work! and the informative videos.

There are several ways to do a valley. It is a personal preference thing. Yes, nail placement is important. Most of the time when you see shingles blown off of a roof, it is because the shingles were not nailed properly.

13:10.. another, and the main reason for nailing on the line, is so you hit the part where the double layers of shingles are at. Or as we call it "the double meat".. its the thickest part of the shingle, giving the best hold possible
@doityourselfdenniscom
@doityourselfdenniscom 3 года назад
Yes, I have been on a lot of roofs that the shingles have blown off and it has always been because they weren't nailed properly through what you are calling the double meat. I think I mention this in the video the importance of nailing on the line.

Be careful on the edge from the video it looks like you running high from the first shingle put on, about 1/4 inch from the drip.. Not all shingles are made the same ive seen many of times they are smaller then the rest in the bundle. Chalking lines are ideal, but mainly for 3 in one shingles where the lines have to be correct or else it looks weird.

Yes, you are right everyone has their way of roofing and there are several different ways of doing valleys. Some ways are more common in certain areas of the countrynand some are more common in others. Not knocking you, but I have replaced a lot of missing shingles on roofs that were supposedly done by a professional. Every one of them and I mean everyone of them have been nailed wrong and that is why they came loose. I have been on a lot of roofs where it was obvious that they never chalked the first line and again these were done by professionals.
