Need to replace main breaker. I can turn off the breaker under the electric meter to kill all electricity coming in house?
@KevinPon.
@KevinPon. 2 года назад
@@frankcantu1144 yes that's if you have a disconnect under your service meter. If not you will have to call your power supply company. After turning off the power from the meter be sure to get a volt tester or volt meter to make sure it's completely de-energize.

The first person who had the right Siemens EQ panel & Siemens breaker who was careful enough to specify the sequence of locking -in the breaker to the bus-bars. There are various panels & breaker types, it would be nice if the guys could be clear on what parts they are specifically working on. The general principles are the same but the specifics matter when teaching someone who is doing it for the very first time & does not want a screw-up. Thanks a lot for this video.

Thanks, brother - I've got a 40 amp breaker and 8 gauge wire to install. Same format - I think most of us who are going to do this just want to see it and not have to think too much in the process, and will turn off the mains. Hopefully you don't get too much grief over that, but this is YT. I paid a sparky last year to replace 10 outlets in my house (it's old, but the main service was updated so the outlets are a pain, and the breaker isn't). He worked with everything live the entire time. But he's a sparky and knows what to get. I mentioned a box that I had that was too small and I didn't care for it, and he swore at it, too, when he installed a new specialty outlet. it was hard bedded in brick and plaster, and both of us agreed that we'd prefer to make it work rather than try to address the box. ......I mentioned surprise that he'd work on everything live, and he said "I got some tingles three times from the small box - I see why you hired me". Those were 110 outlets on a 20 amp breaker, though - far different than getting a little taste from a 150 or 200 amp main.

Hi Joshua #yyc! If that's the case you have no choice but to open up the drywall to access the panel. The cable connectors are not supposed to be on the inside. Especially if it's metal, don't want the chance for it to come off or cause other electrical problems. Cheers 🍻

Good video. I have a 3 car garage/ man cave fully insulated, ceilings too and even the garage doors. Garage is about 660 sq ft with 8ft celing hight. The lowest tempature during Christmas will be 37 degrees farenhight. My questions is if I install a 5000-7000w electric heater, I have to installed a 240v outlet too right or it can be just hardwired?? Eventually I will buy a minisplit system and be getting rid of the electric heater. Will I be able to use the 240v outlet previously installed for electric heater when I install mini split in future?? Also we will be getting an electric car down the road so I will need a 240v outlet to charge car so what will be the correct pathway for my projects, install a 240v right now for electric heater so I have heater in man cave before Christmas or maybe just use propane heater just for that day🙄 until I figure out what minisplit system to buy?? Sorry for all the questions.
@KevinPon.
@KevinPon. 2 года назад
Thanks and hello! Having the heater hardwired will be cheaper. The outlet can me use for your future AC but the outlet will have to be changed to an AC disconnect. You have to make sure you have the bigger wire size of the two that’s required. For your electric car you will need to install a new separate 240V circuit

@KevinPon.
@KevinPon. 2 года назад
That is not the correct way. You "could" be safe that being said ONLY if each pole has only ONE device and does not have the potential to go over 15 amps per circuit. But it's still risky. Not recommend. The only reason he would be doing this is because right now during Covid. It is hard or can be impossible to find the breaker you're looking for. 🍻

Yes, that is correct. It's rated for 30A max. But most likely it will be running at 80%. That's correct. If you can see the specifications of your hot case. It might tell you how many amps it uses 🍻

I feel safer with no power to the panel, so probably going to shut off main. Also, when it comes to breaker types, don’t you need to buy/install what is already in your panel? Like GE, Siemens, D Square, etc?
@KevinPon.
@KevinPon. 2 года назад
👍🏻 it's best to match the same brand. That would be the easiest to know for sure it'll fit in the panel. But on a older panel that brand may not exist anymore. So you'll end up getting another brand that makes those old breakers that works 🍻
@steveloux4709
@steveloux4709 2 года назад
Yes, always match the brand. Even if it "appears" your brand is discontinued, there's usually another manufacturer that has taken over the UL listing and responsibility. As an example, if you have an "ITE" panel, or a "Sylvania" panel, Siemens is now the parent company and they make suitable/listed breakers under the Siemens brand which are acceptable to install in ITE and Sylvania panels. In the case of "Bryant" or "Challenger" or "Westinghouse", Eaton is the parent company and continue to provide suitable breakers for this equipment.

@KevinPon.

@BodineCustomKnives
@BodineCustomKnives Год назад
Gotcha, before I found your channel, I watched someone else use 8/2 wire instead of 8/3. Only 2 hots and a ground were connected. What would be the reason for not using 3 wire and connecting a neutral? The NEMA 6-50R 240 outlet I have only has 2 brass screws and a green.
@KevinPon.
@KevinPon. Год назад
The easiest way, if the device has a slot for a neutral wire use it! The neutral wire is for 120V but some devices have built in step down transformers where neutral wire is not needed. 🍻
@BodineCustomKnives
@BodineCustomKnives Год назад
@@KevinPon. Thank you, sir! Makes sense. The device I’m powering (Invertek E3 VFD) lists the Input Power as 200-240V, single phase only. If I get the correct plug and connect the neutrals, allowing for 120V, will this affect the performance of the VFD? Wasn’t sure if allowing the use of 120V would go against the Input Power requirement of “200-240V only”

Looks like this dude knows his stuff. My only question is why am I able to touch hot or neutral by itself and not get shocked ⁉️ BECAUSE IT NEEDS A COMPLETE CIRCUIT 👍 Just because the electrical tester blinks, doesn't mean it's dangerous to touch because you would have to connect to both hot (BLACK) and neutral (WHITE) AT THE SAME TIME TO BE SHOCKED... Example,,, if you take a plug, bend one prong to the side and plug ONLY ONE in an outlet, it will not 🚫 turn ANYTHING on. Just like a vehicle if you unplug one terminal, IT WILL NOT START UP.

Why white wire needed for 230v balanced load?
@KevinPon.

Depending on the application. Like an oven, the oven lights uses 120V for an example 🍻

I m confused about Double Pole Circuit Breaker. I have seen a lot of pictures/videos which use one hot/live wire and one neutral wire as input and the corresponding output for each of them, whereas when I see the setup in the service panel box, it doesnt have the neutral input into the breaker itself, it takes two hot/live wires (from the service panel buses/two phases ) and two outputs accordingly. I am confused actually.

Hello there, you never put a neutral wire in the breaker. If you do, you must color code it with a color coded jacket over the wire on both end to illustrate it's a energized wire. The neutral wire is only terminated on the neutral bar. Some 240V devices does not need a neutral wire and have two hots, one red and one black, plus a ground.. A range will need white, red, black and the ground. The range will need a neutral to supply 120V. 🍻

@@KevinPon. Great video and thank you so much for your information, how many wires should be inside the insulation pack, I seen rolls with three wires, I seen rolls with two wires etc. I’m running them inside the walls, no conduit.

You're very welcome! You will need 8/3 wire. That will be: 1 Red, 1 Black, 1 White and a bare copper for ground 🍻

These Maxiflex Nitrile coated gloves can be purchased at Amazon and other online stores. I haven't seen them at Home Depot but they do have similar nitrile coated gloves. Best glove to use for working on projects

Shouldn't the white wire be marked as red or black to indicate that it is not a neutral

This is a 4 connector cable meaning it has 2 hot wires, 1 neutral and 1 ground. There is no need to mark the cable.

The gloves he is using are not dielectrically tested and are not recommended for electrical work. If you want actual electrically insulated gloves, consider visiting an electrical wholesale house or a company like Grainger that will sell gloves that have been tested at or above the voltages that you might encounter in your work. Usually a Class 00 glove with calf skin leather outer gloves are the right ticket for 120/240V work, as these have been tested to 500 volts. Don the gloves, turn off the power, and keep the gloves on until you have verified with a contact tester (such as a digital multimeter) that the bus is dead. Measure from line to line, line to neutral, and line to ground and ensure the reading is approximately zero volts before performing any work depicted in this video.

@@georgie2158 8 gauge 3 wire will be what you're looking for. So that means in the 8/3 wire you will get black, red, white and a bare copper. Eventhough there's 4 wires it's how they name it 8/3

Neutral and ground bars only tie together at the first point of presence in the system. For a residence, this would be where the main breaker is. For sub panels downstream of the main breaker, never bond the neutral (white) to the green (ground) bus.

I appreciate this informative video. Been wondering why my 240v outlet in the shed is only putting out 120 on each leg but 0 when combined. I took apart the outlet and inspected/cleaned it thinking that was it but nope. I checked the 30 amp breaker. 120 on each leg and 240 combined so that checked out ok. I then noticed that someone attached both hot wires from the shed to only one pole on the breaker. I'm no expert but that just didn't make sense. Why would someone do that? Mistake maybe? IDK. The information in this video confirmed that in order to get 240V each wire has to connect to its own 120V breaker pole. Thank you for sharing. Liked and subbed.
