I bought 15 4x6 panels plus hardware for about $1,300 two years ago. Spent about 6 hours over 3 weekends cutting and drilling. Stored the panels in a closet and am grateful I have not needed them, and hope my luck continues. I do not understand the logic of those who say insurance will cover the damage so why bother. My insurance has a hurricane deductible of 1% of my home value, over $2,000. If a projectile smashes through a window, the wind and water damage can be enormus. These panels are inexpensive compared to shutters.

How do you tell which side is UV protected?
@NeoEon
@NeoEon 4 месяца назад
The ones at Lowes are called "Storm Busters Clearview" and they have a large white instructions label. There is a thin protective film you must peel off before installation. The side which has the white instructions label should be on the outside of your home, as it is this side which has undergone U.V. protection.

can you use roof panels instead of storm panels for protection?
@chuckm.9744

Roof panels are typically too thin, for example ¼ inch thick.

Does anybody know who can install these in the Bradenton area and know how to get the U and T channel bars for larger windows?

Add 8" overall or 8 " top, bottom, sides?
@chuckm.9744
@chuckm.9744 3 месяца назад
Add 8" to the height (4" at top, 4" at bottom -- IF you have a window sill, DON'T add the 4" at bottom), and add 8" to the width (4" to each side).

Yes, but they aren't Miami-Dade county approved for Category 5 storms.

For double windows you said that a H connecting panel will do the job. Could not find the H connecting panel in Lowe's. Can I get from you a correct nomenclature and Item # so that I can order it. Measurement are 5 ' long

I know it's been three years since you asked, but just in case anyone else is looking for it like I was "PCTWH-16MM" is the model number for the connecting panel and "205202545" is the number Lowes uses on their site. They're sold under the name "Thermoclear 2 in. x 96 in. x 5/8 in. (16mm) Polycarbonate Multi-Wall H-Channel"

Metal are prone to bending or damage from flying debris and then they need to be repaired or replaced. Wooden ones are the same, but can actually allow debris to penetrate, if it is moving fast enough. This type has a better design and material that can stop/slow down more debris. they are easier to replace than metal or wood. You can search for "different types/styles of hurricane shutter testing", and watch how they all differ. Quite interesting. There is also a fabric type that stretches across the windows and doors. Supposedly that is even better than hard types, due to the fact that if debris penetrates a hard cover, the wind can still enter and your roof can actually be sucked off. The science behind the fabric is that is creates a continuous seal, even if the glass brakes, so your roof can't get sucked off.

Where is the link for the screws?
@jmackinjersey1
@jmackinjersey1 2 года назад
You can find those specific screws in the hardware section. They have a point and course threads on one side for attaching to wood, and the other has a hex head (for attaching with a 1/4 inch nut driver, and finer threads (for the wing nuts) on the other end.

Look for Tapcon Storm Guard anchors. Also get ¼" by 1" or 1¼" fender washers (¼" is the size of the hole; the 1 inch dimension is the diameter of the entire washer). The fender washer will help prevent blowout of a hole.

How to install over aluminum windows?
@lowes
@lowes 29 дней назад
Yes, you can install these on aluminum windows, but always make sure to check the manufacturers recommendation on how to install them. You can also check out this How-To guide for more tips: www.lowes.com/n/how-to/how-to-install-storm-shutters

My insurance deductible is about the price of protecting 4 windows. There are 18 windows. The math doesn't support using these.
@jmackinjersey1
@jmackinjersey1 2 года назад
You should call your insurance company. There is a different type of storm coverage deductible.
@dantedanis
@dantedanis 5 лет назад
These are pricey and time consuming. If you get damage and have right insurance, you will get it fixed by insurance company. If you try to protect it and spend all that money, it is your lost. So, Lowe’s please make them more affordable.
@jmackinjersey1
@jmackinjersey1 2 года назад
Check with your insurance company, as it's not always that simple. The insurance companies still account for depreciation and degradation of the materials they are going to be replacing, especially a roof/shingles. The storm deductible isn't always the same as the regular deductible. On top of all that, living through the aftermath of a hurricane is bad enough. Add in all of the anguish of removing all of the wet items, wet sheetrock, wet flooring etc. Then you have to wait for a few weeks or even months for the adjusters to come around. Then trying to find a contractor to rebuild takes more time. Believe me, an ounce of prevention is definitely worth a pound of gold.

Obviously you didn’t get the quote from home insurance in the prone area! Either the rate is outrageous or not covered at all. Beside, it’s not the windows or door that you protecting, it’s the expensive content and people living inside after the hurricanes hit
