NEST ROOM THERMOSTAT. NEST INSTALLATION. HOW TO INSTALL A NEST THERMOSTAT. Smart underfloor heating control. Combi Boiler. In-Floor Radiant. Underfloor Heating. In today's video I'm going to show you how to instal a Nest Learning Thermostat from start to finish into an in floor radiant system, also underfloor heating and to a combi boiler. It's just going to be a step by step guide, include connection the Nest to your phone as well.
My name's Allen Hart, and today I'm going to look at how to wire a Nest Thermostat. I'm going to instal the Nest, I'm going to replace this thermostat that I've got here on the underfloor heating system. So, I'm going to show you how to wire the Nest Thermostat, or the Nest NEST Learning Thermostat, onto an underfloor heating system. I'm also going to show you how to wire it onto a combi boiler. I've got quite a few combi boilers here, so I can show you different ways of connecting it onto different boilers as well.
Yeah, let's have a look now. First of all we'll just have a very quick look at what's in the box when you buy it. This thermostat, I bought this thermostat out of my own money, and I'm going to instal it in my man cave. And I've got Nest Thermostats already, so that's why I've got a Nest.
When you get these, they've got a little seal on there. Take the seal off and then we can have a look inside the box. Just take the cover off, you've got your Nest Thermostat. So, that's the bit that would go on the wall, or on your stand if you have a stand. I'm doing it, I'm going to instal this one on the wall. Got the instructions in there, and there's some different wiring diagrams in there as well. We'll go through them in a few minutes.
We've got the heat link, so that's the part that would wire to the boiler. We'll do that shortly as well. We've got the back plate for the thermostat, this is where you put the wires if you're going to wire this. And again, we'll go through that shortly. And then you've just got a few screws in there as well. Let's connect it onto the wall.
In the first page of the book, it's actually page five, but it's the first page that's got all that really matters, it shows you what you should have in the box. So, you should have the trim plate, which I'll show you that shortly. The display, the base, the heat link, and some screws.
So, first of all we'll start with the heat link, we've got that here. We've got a screw, just on bottom of there. And if you undo that screw, you can just life the front cover off. So, we'll have a closer look at this now.
For the first section of this video, I'm going to instal it onto the underfloor heating wiring centre. So, I'm just going to connect this onto the wall here. This video is just for advice, so always use someone who is competent to do wiring. If we start on here, we've got the neutral, we've got our live, and we've got an earth there. First wire I'm going to connect in, I'm going to put a loose lead on, which will be the neutral, the live, and the earth. I'm going to put that into here now.
I've wired the neutral in there, that's the blue wire, and that's the live. I'm also going to wire this earth wire, and that goes in here. Now, the instructions say if you're going to wire in T1 and T2, then it needs an earth, so that's why we're going to wire that in. I've labelled the live, the neutral and the earth on this, and that's something that's common, so you're always going to need that, whichever system that you wire, you're always going to need that live and the neutral.
The live, the neutral and the earth from the Nest heat link that needs to go to a spur, or to the main wiring centre where you put your live, your neutral, and an earth. Mine's just a bit of a jumble just there at the moment, but it'll be all inside that case once I've finished. And then what we need to do then is we need to look at the control of where we're taking the wires from. So we've got a ...

Excellent as always, learned so much. Ta. Couple of questions if you can help? We’re looking at fitting the beneath heat slimboard retro fit underfloor heating system you cover in another video. Three zones and a forth zone for upstairs with conventional rads. We’re planning on installing Nest thermostats for the full system, so four in total. Boiler is Ideal Logic Plus. - Could you recommend a good quality Wiring Centre compatible with the Nest thermostats? - would you fit a dedicated fused spur power supply for the wiring centre or take supply direct from boiler? - would you recommend setting up in Opentherm? Or is there no advantage to this? Many thanks.

Hi Allen, I hope you are well and thank you for the great videos. May I ask if you are still satisfied with the Nest thermostat and what issues have you experienced over the years? I am renovating my flat and soon will be looking on the market for the whole wiring system, thermostats etc. I have the manifold installed and underfloor heating in place, but still wonder which OP system is the best. I’ll very much appreciate if you could advise, please. Best regards, Iliya

Thanks for this. I was wondering how to to go about having a couple of tado wireless thermostats controlling 2 UFH zones and this has cleared that up. Am I right to assume that if my whole house(other than a towel rad) is on smart TRVs, I won't need a zone valve to split the ufh and the rad systems? Thanks again

I got 2 questions about this product if I want to wire from fuse spare, do I have to use 5 core cables to the combi boiler from back plate? And if I had to install the display away from boiler where no socket available then do I have do hard wiring?

Hi Allen, I'm trying to do almost this exact setup at the moment - right now my Baxi boiler is connected to my Heat Link how you show it toward the end of this video. My question is - I'm adding an OMNIE underfloor heating wiring centre to this set up. How do I connect both the UFH wiring centre and the combi boiler to the heat link at the same time, so that when the Nest calls for heat, the boiler and UFH pump both activate at the same time? Thanks for your brilliant videos from a fellow Yorkshireman!

Hi Allen. Great work as usual. I bought a Baxi 800 which I think you’ve said is a good choice. Our installer got the boiler up and our electrician connected the nest but we’re not sure about the best setup in terms of opentherm. Do we need to use that standard with the Baxi? And we have the nest on a stand and not directly wired. Is that ok? Does Openthem need it to be directly wired? Sorry for that questions. And don’t worry, I won’t be touching any wires. I’ll leave that to a professional.

Hi Allen, first of all great video!, clear explanation and to be honest the only one I can find for helping me installing the Nest heat link with the UFH. But I still have one question: my Wiring Center connects with 24v thermostats. So can I stil use the same wiring as you did? L(24v) and the Switch Live? So I don’t do anything with the old N(24v)?

Hi there, do you know how the nest thermostat can we wired in if we don't have pre-existing thermostat in the home so no previous wiring to heatlink. It would be a large job running wires to the heatlink from inside the home and really don't want to use the base and charger for a cleaner install.

Good video thank you but would be good for you to show a video showing USB low voltage adapter connection in a Hallway for example this is how I have mine and explain that Nest Thermostat speaks to Heatlink using a thread wireless network & is not dependant on home WiFi, one of the great advantages of Nest is that schedule is maintained should internet or router go down. Also that pressing button on Heatlink will switch on boiler should you loose connection to the thermostat.

Sure t1 t2 could be wired from the main unit however what stops you from providing your own power ( not 240v ) supply to the wireless nest unit in the wall elsewhere without running t1 t2 between each other. Of course this means a 240v to 12v? and that will cost you a little bit and it will likely require a fused single gang near by? I can see this all being slightly messy I guess but I’m certainly not advocating you hide the usb power adapter in the wall of course , since I bet someone will do that and could Overheat? What do you think about providing power to the wireless unit like I propose .
