Welcome to another episode of Five minute Fridays where we install peel and stick wallpaper. Thanks to one of our viewers who inspired us to create a video that wasn't only helping homeowners. To all you renters out there, you too deserve a beautiful accent wall and one of the best ways to accomplish that is by using peel and stick wallpaper.

Currently doing our guest bathroom & it immediately changed the feel! I love it! And it's so easy! Depending on the wallpaper, it can cost more than painting it...but it's not permanent.☝️

Thanks for posting this!! I'm renting and wanted to hang up some peel n stick in my kitchen. I watched multiple videos but no one said to use a leveler.

Definitely use a level to get nice and plumb 👍 a laser line also works but that is not a commonly owned tool.

If you’re real scared about the adhesive pulling up your paint, pin up a layer of thin poster board first (like tiles). You can use them as a sort of stencil to get the right amount of contact paper up there and when you move you can just pull the whole sheet down. Obviously the more precise the better. Try not to have any gaps between sheets and take your time!

Great video, thank you for sharing. My only question -- how long do you think it took to do the one wall? I'm planning to do a wall that looks close to the same length, and I need to decide if this is something I can do in an evening or if I need to give myself a full day

Honestly, Im sorry I don't remember the brand or pattern name. It is a light grey with gold veining running throughout if that helps at all.

Minimal Marble Vinyl Roll Wallpaper (cream, vanilla, light brown, and metallic gold). You can find this wallpaper at your local Home Depot! Hope this helps :)

Same method just this time you will be cutting above/below the window. Making sure you stay square and plumb, it will all work out once past the window.

Any thoughts or experience with peel and stick wallpaper not staying on an exterior wall? I live in Michigan and my insulation is so so. The wall I'd like to cover is an exterior bedroom wall that gets cool during the winter warmer in summer. Would that cause the wall paper to fall off at some point? Also did you paper your step stool it seems to match? :)

I have done several exterior walls (including the one in this video) without any winter issues. My gut instinct would be as long as the wall isn't really cold, it should be fine. However, like anything you never know as each situation is unique.

@@hsdesignstudio as a renter who has some nasty old walls. I like this idea. But as for a kitchen that had some very old glued laminate. Thats falling off and broken and chipped. Under is wood paneling. And its and exterior wall to with cement block no insulation. Any recommendations for preparation to use this or most likely won't work as the adhesive is there. Don't want to be removing cabinets just to cover 100x18 area and 42 x18 area.

I've never tried that to be honest. Try a test piece perhaps? It probably depends how smooth the concrete is though.

To clean the walls what should I use?

I just used warm water and a drop of soap. If the wallsare really bad, you may have to make a pass with something like TSP first. Make sure there are no residues and the wall is dry before starting. Good luck 👍

Do you know if peel and stick wallpaper will work on log cabin wood walls?

I'm doubtful...but the best option is to test it out in a small area if you can.

I didn't see any trimming done or I missed it relative to ceiling. Did you start each section flush to ceiling? My ceiling isn't true straight. So should I leave a little and trim?

I left an overhang on any edges that weren't square and straight. My ceiling was quite straight aside from the corners. I would leave extra and trim it back flush anywhere you need to scribe it to the adjacent wall/ceiling.

@@hsdesignstudio Thank you for response. Another question, please? It appears you placed strips vertically against the previous one. I am finding recommendations to do that and/or slightly overlap. Your advice?

@@jimmerritt1171 I have found it depends on the wallpaper. The particular stuff in this video required no overlap, and it was easy to keep the seams tight. I have installed other wallpaper (pasted) that required overlap. Check your particular wallpaper to verify before you start 👍

How do you get all the bubbles and wrinkles out so easily from 3:04 to 3:25?? I keep having to pull the wallpaper up and out to smooth it perfectly. Its taking me forever. You seem to do it without having to keep reapplying.

Sorry for the delayed response, I never saw the comment. The key is to move slowly and smooth out the wallpaper as you go. If you can stop it from sticking ahead of you, you can generally keep flattening it down as you go. Did your project turn out alright?

I'm wallpapering a small bathroom. 2 walls. The corner seems like it might be difficult. Start on one side and work my way though the corner or start in the corner and work away from it on each wall?

I like to start in an area I know I can get plumb, typically that isn't the corner (at least not in the houses I work in haha)

@@hsdesignstudio Thank you for replying so quickly! So, is wallpapering "through" the corner difficult? In my mind it seems like it might be awkward.

@@rrandyman1 It definitely can be. I have found that working my way from the center of the wall toward the ceiling/floor was easiest for wrapping a corner. I get my sheets lined up and work top to bottom as you normally would, but don't press the entire width of the sheet down, only the first 1/3 to half. Then you can start pressing the final 1/2 to 2/3 down working from the center outward. Does that make sense? BTW, I am also not a professional wallpaper installer and they may suggest a different approach. I just know that has worked for me in the past.

No but just pin up a layer of thin poster board and then the wallpaper on top of that.

How sticky is that stuff? Could it work for the ceiling too?

It's sticky enough, but still easily removed. I'm sure it would stick to the ceiling initially, but I'm not too sure about it's longevity up there.

I used three rolls for this wall (with leftovers). However, it will all depend on the length/square foot coverage of your particular roll.

I would try in a corner and see how well it sticks. The tricky area is likely going to be keeping the seams tight and even.

To be honest, I have no idea. I think it would stick 🤔 but I can't say for sure. My suggestion, test a small sample in a corner if you are able. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

The wall I want to make into a feature wall is textured and glossy. Is peel and stick ok to use on this?

Thats hard to say...likely depends on the texture and the material giving the glosiness. If it is too textured, you will likely have trouble at the seams. My suggestion would be to try a couple small test pieces down in a corner to see how it sticks/looks and to mimic a seam.

@@hsdesignstudio if your wall is textured then I wouldn't suggest you use peel and stick cause due to the wall surface being sandy it's likely that peel and stick will fall off later on or the edges will only come off which will look horrible. And also if the wall is glossy then due to the dye it was used it will again not stick well. You should try fabric wallpaper or use liner.

@@mryinteriors814 that would be my thoughts as well on a textured wall. However, l would still say it depends on the type of texture. I came across a wall about 1 month ago that was textured with peel and stick on top. It actually looked good, with no edges lifting. But that wasn't a sandy texture. It felt more akin to a bad skim coat of drywall mud.

@@hsdesignstudio @The Homestud I was talking about more like sandy textured walls. Cause with sandy walls peel and stick only has change to stick about 50% of the wall cause rest has air gaps. But with no sandy only textured walls it depends on the percentage of the surface that peel and stick grips on and if no texture on the edges then no problems. But even in that case its always better to use extra glue on the wall to at least cover up some gaps. but if Alexis says am gonna give it a shot then Alexis please let us know how it turns out:)

If it is clean, I'm sure it would have no problem sticking. The downside is it may not be easily removable down the line without wrecking the wallpaper underneath.

All of the peel and stick wallpaper I have ever dealt with has no overlap. Just work slowly and make sure the two strips are tight together.

@@rogeliovazquez8087 hmmm.. I'm sure you could, but it may not peel off nicely. Therefore, you may need to set it perfect the first time. I have never tried though, so that is just speculation. Take a small piece and try in a corner before going all out.

I have been hanging wallpaper for many years, but this peel and stick is really contact paper people use to line the kitchen drawers with in the 70s. This is the worst to hang. Good luck to people that has never hung anything.

I would venture to say that largely depends on the quality of the wallpaper and the installation. I have had some installed for 5 years at this point and it still looks great.
