How to install programs in a laptop without an external disc drive

I just got a new scanner and in the box was a DVD to install the drivers, there was no way to install them without the DVD drive. You saved the day my friend, thank you so much.

@DroidsHD You can put the program on a flash drive. There are other ways to get files to your netbook as well. This is just one method.

I don't know if you are still monitoring the comments, but I found this RU-vid video this am and was delighted to find out how wonderfully it worked for me. I was trying to install Microsoft 7 onto my netbook. Everything worked exactly as you illustrated, except, when it had completed downloading and I attempted to launch it on netbook, it asked for the 25 security code which I had entered on laptop. Unfortunately, t wouldn't accept it as a valid key code on netbook, which is odd since it accepted on laptop. Any suggestions?

@sims3master101 It should be in the Control Panel. Look for an icon named Network or something like that. I'm not sure exactly where it is, I haven't used XP in a while. See if you can find it. If not, I'll boot up my old XP Laptop and tell you step by step.

I bought a SSD drive and need to transfer the old disk to the SSD drive. I have a Netbook without a Drive. How can I do this? Do you have a Video for that? You did a great job on the instructions. Very clear and understandable. I'll subscribe.

This is great thanks very much. Drive on pc broken but it's installing an old program from my laptop's cd drive as the manufacturer doesn't provide it for download any longer.

Very helpful thank you so much! Simple and easy to understand. But now I’m wondering how to install from my program files. Transferring them over to the new laptop doesn’t recognize them. I don’t have the original installation cd for that one. Does anyone know what the solution is?

@TutorialMaker My Home computer runs on Vista so your tutorial made sense there, but my netbook runs on XP, so it was different.

Yes. You don't need an internet connection but you need a connection between the computers through some kind of local area network.

Works great! Saved me from going out and buying and external USB drive.

Thanks so much!. It is a very useful video. I would always borrow an external driver for me to do this. Now, I know I can do it, even with different operating systems (win 8 and win 10)

@MaplePlayer99 You mean that you can connect a memory stick to a computer and others can see it, too? Yes. You can do that using this exact same method. Just instead of sharing the CD unit, share the USB unit.

@DroidsHD If that is what you're planning to do, the method shown in the video should work fine.

@Dintch20 Unfortunately, no. This feature only works within Windows. If you want to install an OS into your netbook, you will need an external disc drive, or a USB storage unit big enough to store all the data from the installation disc. If you tell me what OS you're trying to install I might be able to better help you.

Hi - I have just tried to share files from my desktop to my netbook. The only network my netbook sees is my netbook. I am using Windows XP on my desktop so the steps to make it a sharing network are a little different from your video. Once I complete the steps to make it sharing it says I need to made an XP Network sharing disc and put it on all computers - well that is impossible on a netbook. so now what?

could I do this for Roxio game capture? because I've tried it with a usb and it always says that there was a corrupt file? I'll go try it out, and if it doesn't work, should I just buy a CD ROM USB reader or something like that?

Once I've transfered everything, can I turn off file sharing and set my computer back to normal again? Also, does this work with a learn-to-type program CD?

No. You need Windows already install in order to even setup this. If you want to install a new version of Windows in your Netbook you will have to use a USB storage device.

im trying to get my command and conquer games to my pc (it doesnt have a disk drive) if i get the setup files over to my pc like you showed, couldnt i just install it to a digital drive to make it read like its on a disk drive?

Yes, you can turn it off once you don't need it. But I don't see why you would. It's not a security risk.

I'm not familiar with that device, so I couldn't tell you. If you think you can make it work then go ahead and try it and let me know if it works.

You need to be more specific. What you're describing could be cause by one of these: firewall, computer not in the same network, computer not properly setup, privilege issues, and so on. See if you can get a more detail diagnosis, then I will be able to help you better.

This should work with Windows xp, Vista, and 7. It could work with older versions but I haven't tried it.
