The rake edge isn’t always square to the eave, so if you get into the habit of relying on the rake edge to square your shingle, you’ll be fighting it all the way up your rack. It’s better to follow eave in my opinion. Also; a tip if you’re looking to grow your channel, I’d recommend being more thorough on explaining the entire process of what you’re doing & why. Why do you stairstep up instead of going one row at a time from the eave?

Installing the stair step way ensures the shingles being installed squarely on the roof decking!

Great tutorial! Is there a tip to keep from putting nails under the seem lines?

Just remember that you have a 6 inch (recommended minimum) step. So if you’re shooting up the left side like in this video, place a nail at the far right of your shingle (an inch or so from edge), then jump over about 10 inches for good measure, place a nail and from that point on you don’t have to worry about seem nails. Each shingle you lay, you have one seem to worry about (most of the time). Just ALWAYS keep the next shingle in mind & your brain will naturally do the rest for you given you understand that a nail cannot be placed on seem!
