I have oak newel posts and hand rails in my place. Same type of double-ended screw connection. However, one of them has worked loose over the years, so now the railing can rotate just a little (the balusters stop it from moving too much), but it's still super annoying. Something to consider before gluing in the plugs over the access hole where those nuts are. They aren't the easiest things to drill out.

How do you attach those thin modern rectangular handrails...say 3/4 to 1/2 inch thick? Dowels? Also do you have a video on measuring and cutting balusters on an incline?

I liked the balustrade series for the most part, but I have a couple of issues with this one. A lot of comments on the single Toggle (Butterfly) Bolt, but I think it's enough with added adhesive. Two or 3 would have been better though. IMO, best practice would be to cut the drywall, install deadwood, and refinish the wall. I really don't like that the wall end of the rail is attached to the half Newel with only 1 construction screw. I'd use 3 minimum, and 4 would be even better. I realize they have to be precise because the handrail can't be turned to adjust while attaching the balusters. Another option is to attach the balusters to the handrail before final assembly. Just my .02¢

You used the Zipbolt for the newel posts, any reason you didn’t use the zipbolt handrail to post hardware?

Tip, use a drill for inserting that stud vs vice grips. Tighten it right in your chuck and spin it right in. I do all my floating shelves studs that way.

wish you had posted this much earlier... i have just 4by4 posts that i simply screwed in. and am using 2 by 3s for railing that i will pocket hole screw in.

I am building a house, and your videos have helped me in many steps along the way, so let me first thank you! I would like to know if you think t would be acceptable/helpful to install the newel post on top of the soleplate? This would negate the need fore precise cutting of the soleplate around the posts. My soleplate is 1" thick.

Your welcome. Newel posts are not usually done that way but would work in most cases.

Any reason not to use some wood glue on those joints where the rail meets the newel post, in addition to those screw fasteners? Or is it just overkill?

You could for sure. The type of spindles I will be installing later ,I wanted to be able to adjust things a bit if I needed to later.

put a little piece of masking tape over the wrench end. holds the nut well and you can start it easy.

are you confident that butterfly anchor will hold that side of the railing up? I feel like overtime if you lean on it it will just break, its only drywall

Most of these items are available through any lumber retailer or big box lumber store, Depending on styles they stock.. Speciallty railing stores also.

My neighbor installed a very similar oak rail and post system for a remodeled basement entry. His was a kit that required minimal cutting for fit. Is your custom?

That zip bolt. I need some for a smaller woodworking project (lamp) where I could put a wingnut at one end to be able to open it up when I need to adjust something. It looks like zip bolt is a brand name for newell product etc. Is there a genraic name for a bolt that is wood at one end and machine at the other. Just want to order an 1/8 inch diam one but dont know what to search for.

this is specific to railings so I doubt there is a smaller size shank

You need to get yourself some ratchet box wrenches, lol. Would make getting those nuts on easier. Soooo glad I found your videos. I've got the exact project coming up. Only difference is I'm going to use poplar as my wife wants a painted set up. Not going to spend double the money on oak or birch. Prices here are wild for lumber.

In my area (saskatchewan) the guardrail must be a minimum of 900mm (35-1/2" ) in height . The newel post have no set height difference over the hand rail, sometimes its just the design of the post that determines the difference.

Followed alot of tips here to install a 14' handrail and iron balusters. The middle of the handrail is not solid. It is flexing a bit. What did I do wrong?

If you only have end posts they are too far apart . I would put one more post in the middle.

How do you ensure the wooden plug is the correct size to fit into the hole?

They are sold in specific sizes. So drill the holes accordingly.

I would install the posts using the same bolts but epoxy them into a hole drilled in the concrete.

Don't know where you are located. People should check their local code for guardrail and handrail height.

Clearly, you know what you are doing with this project, but you might want to review and make a second take and edit scenes together to eliminate omissions and "don't have to discuss" parts. The thing with forgetting to counter-sink the screw is very humanizing, but you want to show expertise. Are those "handrails" actually handrails or are they guardrails?
