Any idea if they make a 4 inch retrofit thing? Dad has PAR30 bulbs in 4inch cans so he wants LEDs but I can't find any retrofits....

I went to install the same thing this morning and got a bit confused. I figured I'd just wire nut the old wires into the new LED one and call it good. I'm glad I pulled up your video first. Your old fixture matches mine exactly and showed me exactly what to do without being an idiot. Thanks!

Here's a tip on removing the old trims without fingernails or messing up your fingernails. Unscrew old light bulb. Cross both your hand at the wrist and make like a butterfly (for example, back of hands touching & the palms of both hands are facing out). Insert both hands up through the opening. Push your fingers out to press against the sides of the trim housing and pull down. Bingo! Don't have to dig your fingernails under the old trim. Also, like one of the other commenter said just push from the back of the kit and it pops out. No need to struggle with tearing the package.

Try double sided tape. Hot glue works but i would put it towards inside so that it doesnt ooze out. Also, if you were to get a defective one it would rip drywall or paint off.

Super helpful, thanks. The instructions were pretty misleading when snapping the tensioners in to the little brackets on the sides of the bucket. I was trying to snap in the tensioners at the top of the bucket somewhere at first and had to find a video to see where the tensioners went. Also, the little brackets on the side, I had to bend out a little to slide the tensioners in. They were flattened a bit so it was difficult to snap anything into them. Very easy install knowing this now.

Thank you so much for the video. My buddy and I were having so much trouble trying to figure out how the lights connected to the cans that we were fixing to give up. But once we saw how the lights connected to the can everything began to run so smoothly. We fought with one can for over a hour but once we saw the video and the step by step we managed to get 3 more lights in in less than half an hour. Thanks again for your work and keep it up!!!

You and your wife just saved my girlfriend and myself from installing them the wrong way. I had old spring housings and was jamming these new ones in the can all willy nilly. Turns out I just use the clips you pointed out in the first minute. Way easier than jamming them in and trying to get them to stay put!
@oli390

So what is the benefit of these vs just replacing the bulb with an LED one? Everyone shows you how the replacing process but nobody tells you why? Aren't you limited with these in terms of increasing a LED of 60Watts to 100 watts unless you buy an entire new retro fit piece. Someone please explain this to me because I don't get the appeal. Is it just for trim aesthetics?!?!
@cloudstrifeification
@cloudstrifeification 6 лет назад
These retrofit kits are specifically made for can lights. A lot of standard LED bulbs cannot be used in fully enclosed fixtures or recessed lighting as stated on the box when you buy them. Installing these standard LED bulbs in these type fixtures will not allow them to dissipate heat efficiently which will cause them to cut out and fail prematurely. So, these retrofit kits allow the LED array to be able to dissipate its heat correctly.

Carla Wright My first guess is that you got a bad light. I would just take it back. If it is still doing it after you replaced it you most likely have a loose wire somewhere at the switch or the light. Other than that you could have dirty electricity, but I doubt it.

Hi Adam, this is an EXCELLENT Video (and commercial for Costco). I think you did an excellent job in recording the whole thing. It seems that you replaced all of your "Old Gas guzzlers" with these new LED fixtures which INDEED is the SMARTEST thing to do as you save money and it emits less heat, looks nice and Easy for vision also. Now I will tell you what I did not like- ready? #1 Only your name is included. Why? Your lovely wife who is so polite and gentle did at least 50% of the work (um um, don't deny it). So where is her name? #2 Except for the frame #649, 650 I did not see her at all. Not fair. #3. This is the Most Important one - You were not as polite to her as she was to you (why can't you say please when you ask her to do something for you?.... Hey Adam, I am just roasting you for no reason (I enjoy it though). Both of you did an excellent job and I wish you both ALL THE BEST. PLEASE keep showing more DIY videos. I am subscribing your videos. Love you both.

Wouldn’t fit the lightolier cans. Also had lots of trouble with the Fert dimmer switches. Got a lot of interference and lights flickered in other rooms when these dimmers were install. By an electrician. Had to buy different dimmers. Some aren’t flush to the ceiling. Can I put som glue sealant on the housing to keep them in place?

There are two spots where the spring wire can mount. mount the spring wire at the clip closest to the floor. You can also raise the can housing by loosening the screws.

Some L.E.D.s aren't designed for use upside-down. They don't last as long due to inefficient heat dissipation. A lot of C.F.L.s have the same problem. Also, the surface-mount L.E.D.s have better light distribution. Unless you like narrow spots of illumination, the L.E.D.s give wider spread.

Ours are in a room below an attic space.We had an energy audit and he told us we could put insulation right over these, they are sealed at the bottom and not too hot above. Simply using a LED (as we had done) still allows heated or cooled air to escape into the attic.

out of curiousity, why do you need to "retrofit" the light socket? Why can't you just screw the LED bulbs in?
@jckclt
@jckclt 7 лет назад
You can buy LED bulbs. I can't speak for the poster of the video, but this provides a cleaner look. There is no gap around the bulb. This is a flush look. Not only does it look good, but it's better for your HVAC. Much harder for air to get through this than the traditional screw in bulb option.

Adam, Great video! I really liked your comparison of the incandescent bulb light to the LED bulb. I wondered why people would need these retrofit lights kits instead of just replacing the bulb with an LED bulb - until I saw the tapered housing of your can light! The LED bulbs I've seen have cooling fins on them that might be too wide to fit or properly cool the bulb. My can lights are cylinder-shaped and I can simply unscrew the incandescent bulb and screw in an LED or CFL bulb. FYI - some CFL's are instant-on, especially those made in recent years. But most are a cool white. I like the LED's better, but for the difference in price, I still use CFL's. As the prices come down on LED's, I'm picking up a few - especially for bulbs that are difficult to replace. Costco here in Ohio applies the rebates from our electric company (AEP) to the instore price, so no mail-in rebates are needed. Ron
