How to Install Toggle Bolts 

I want to point out that there can be an electrical hazard related to the task of installing toggle bolts in a wall. Be sure to determine if any electrical wires are running through the wall and where the wires run so you do not electrocute yourself. I had predetermined where the outlet wire was going in this video before drilling. Sorry I forgot to mention this in the video.

I watched this and was able to use toggle bolts to re-hang a towel rack that had come off and made a huge hole! This was awesome! Even better was that my late husband had 12 in his collection out in the garage so it was free!! Thank you for showing us!

Thank you very much for showing how toggle bolts work. I especially appreciate you showing that you need to put the hardware ON the toggle bolt and have it ready to load into the wall and tighten. I was so focused on learning how toggle bolts work that I completely forgot about the pre-installation part. And from the nobody asked me file...There was not a lot of side to side room to experiment with to find studs and drive the screws into the studs. I might have considered using a stud finder here, marking the studs and trying to get at least some of the screws in the studs. Then again, if your not bearing a lot of weight on the final hardware, securing to the studs may not be an issue whatsoever...

I don't know if anyone mentioned it yet, if so disregard... But you are drilling immediately over an electrical outlet. Now, first thing is first, the tiny hole to probe a stud was unnecessary; all electrical switch and receptacle boxes are mounted to studs, so you can do a simple knock on either side of an outlet to feel which side has the stud the box is screwed into. From there you can measure ~18" away in each direction, you'll have a great idea where the next stud is. Okay, now the important bit. You are drilling directly above an electrical outlet, the conductor feeding the box should be stapled to the stud and travel vertically toward the top of the frame, toward the attic. But you don't have x-ray vision, and can't know that for sure. I installed cable for several years and trust me that is the right mindset to have. There is nothing wrong with where you installed the toggle bolt, but you did so without any regard to the electrical hazard. If you are teaching people how to do this, hazards are a part of the job and you should be indicating the hazards and mentioning a few safety tips along the way. The real world DIYer or cable guys method to this is to put your drill on the slowest possible speed, proceed to drill the initial hole in the drywall and as soon as your bit has made it through just the sheet of dry wall, let go of the trigger stop drilling and set it down. Take a long screw driver that has a plastic or fiberglass hand grip and insert the driver tip into the hole in the dry wall you just made. Holding only the handle grip, feel around with your screwdriver for anything, any kind of sudden resistance, tap around to feel if it's like plastic or metal, or does it feel like wiring, or ideally there is no resistance to note anywhere you can feel with the screwdriver and you can feel the rear sheet of drywall on the other side of the frame. If you are doing this in an exterior wall, or interior walls adjacent to garages, there will be insulation, use the screwdriver to feel around and also to swivel it around in a circular motion to carve a hole into the insulation so you're not grabbing any with your drill bit and getting your bit all wound up. You don't need to go crazy into detail about the danger, but please for educational sake please just point out the hazard related to the task, offer a simple tip or point out where someone can learn more about the anatomy of residential structure framing and national electrical codes for the pathway of outlet conductors. Thank for the otherwise great video, toggle bolts are amazing!

use a stud finder (or at least advise people to use a stud finder) you are a few inches away from an electrical outlet. Most stud fingers will detect for electrical cables. Even if there is no obvious electrical outlet still check

9/16 drill bit, only if tools were available in metric size.

Everyone shows you how to use this except they don’t show you how you screw the thing in lol. For me it just spins. I’m trying to use these on 20 feet ceilings for security cameras lol
