The 22MM Crow Foot fit so I bought the metric kit for around $27 more likely to use them in future. My nut came off easily so grinding an old wrench shorter and crow baring might have worked. I used an old bike cable and scrap piece of wood as handle to pulled spring worked nicely. Thank you very much for video it wasn't difficult and I am back on the road. A real MTD Kelvar belt was $18 on Ebay seems worth the few extra dollars the other belt still looked serviceable that is still half price of normal retail. Didn't even know Crow Feet Wrenches existed! The same PT Performance brand is cheaper on Ebay than Sturdevant's if you watch the video in advance you can save a few more bucks.

Quick question. I need to replace the large pulley. The one you put the screw driver through. But I can not get the old one out. I have it loose, but I can't figure out how to maneuver it out. The bar is in the way. Will I have to take the fenders off to get it out?

Regarding that ornery spring, I use a loop of #80 weedeater line that I run thru a handle that I made out of a small block of scrap wood. I drilled a hole in the handle & then tied a double knot on the line ends after inserting them thru said hole. The loop grabs the curved spring end. When I get the spring in place, I cut the line (which is now pinched) to remove it. Yes, I have to remake the line/loop next time I need to perform this task but that's not very often. Your hook is better but sometimes one has to improvise. Thanks for the very well filmed & communicated video!

Can’t diagnose correctly without seeing the machine. I can say if the belts are all on as they should be, sometimes it is hard to change from the forward gear to the reverse gear, and you have to lift the clutch pedal a little bit and play with the shift knob to get it to rock into the reverse, or into the forward position. Other than that it could be bad transmission? Broken belt? Again without seeing it it’s almost impossible to diagnose.

Thanks for an excellent video; especially in getting the light exposure in an unlit space. I ordered a spring tool after watching this video. I own an older vintage Troy Bilt (2005) that has served me faithfully. Years ago I paid a local shop $150 to "replace all the belts". I have a very small mowing area and use the tractor for towing a small yard trailer; a year later I discovered that the belt for the blades had been the replaced BUT the drive belts were almost in pieces (multiple deep cracks); the "mechanic" had obviously given up in replacing that belt but still charged me for the entire job! Lesson: watch videos like this and DIY. BTW, at least on my mower, there is a frame bolt on the left rear of the mower which, when loosened allows the pulley on that side to be moved enough to slide a belt over it. Just FYI.

If you installed a aftermarket belt? That is your issue. If you Installed a OEM belt, you either have a bad variator or you may need to replace the other belt to make it work correctly.

@JohnsonsSmallEngines thank you for the reply! I figured out that the belt had been worn for so long that the medium sized pulley was tensioned for so long in a the out position that it had made a catch which didn't allow a normal full sized belt retract all the way. So I basically just needed to lubricate the pulley arm and everything started working fine lol.

You must use OEM belts (original equipment manufacturer) or that can happen. I learned that the hard way. If you did use OEM belts then I would suggest making sure the variable drive pulley is not stuck.

I'm working a lower drive belt on the Bronco, that seems to be stuck in drive and reverse. I had to replace the jam nut that was missing. The only way to stop the tractor is to turn the ignition off. I know the part # is 954-0467, but that belt seems to be too tight and will not become loose and fear that is the issue. The other # is 954-0467A. I hope that one is at least 90.8 inches. I had hoped that you were going to do both belts to see the routing. There are no schematics under under the frame as other tractors have. As for the spring though, I use a long electrical wire to loop around.

Check your mounting from the transmission to the frame. I have come across broken mounts from where the transmission bolts to the frame. Try putting the tractor into a gear forward or reverse (engine not running) then rock the tractor back and forth to see if the transmission is moving up and down (if you can, take battery out and look to see if the transmission pulley is moving) if the transmission pulley is going up and down when rocking the tractor back and forth, you may have loose mounting bolts or broken mounting flange from the frame.

Make sure you have a full tank of gas. When you say “it turns over but it won’t stay running”. If it starts then dies quickly after starting? (1) Try putting the choke 3/4 on to see if it gets better. If it does you may have a carburetor issue. (2) you also may have poor compression and you will need to check the compression with a compression tester. I would really to see it to diagnose correctly.
