+Altair Ibn-La Ahad Yes it is much cheaper to do it yourself if you can, but not all people can or have houses that are easy to do. In hiring any contractor you need to get at least 3 estimates from reliable contractors that have multiple references. It is also important to check on the contractor with your states builders board to see if he is licensed and if he has any claims against him/her.
@blake4701
@blake4701 7 лет назад
Altair Ibn-La Ahad there are a lot more expenses to running a legitimate business than a simple wage. payroll taxes, equipment maintenance, licensing fees, WCB, Professional Associations, on going certifications regarding safety etc. Not to mention there can be warranty costs, and no pension/benefits of any kind for the contractor. Also, installing the siding is only half of it at best. proper installation of the envelope (homewrap, dripcaps, and flashing of all types). i have seen so many jobs with improper moisture management issues. there is a huge difference between do it yourself/handyman work and a professional job.

Great video. We had hail damages at our home. One side was okay but the other side of vinyl siding. It looked lk like it was shredded. Roof company hired a contractor to do the sliding. Guy did half of the house. He would do the rest in a couple of day because of waiting for supplies. I noticed the siding is loosen. when I looked down one side it was not even, it was uneven. I called him. He told me that boards should not be tight but there is nothing he could do about the unevenness. He did not replaced the blackboard but only patch up the holes with some black paper. He is coming back tomorrow. I thought the blackboard was going to be replaced but it is not. When viewing my siding, what should I lk out for. thanks
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 8 лет назад
As long as the wrap is patched and taped that will be ok. The siding should be straight /even up and down when you look along the length of it. Sometimes you may get a slight wave but it should not be all over the place

I liked your video I didn’t see how you waterproofed the TYPAR vapor barrier/house-wrap to the weather-strip you sealed under the window? On the west coast if we don’t tape the house wrap to; the weather-strip that’s sealed under the window or to the window itself, the installation WILL LEAK. I like to install a plywood blade and my saw backwards which gives me a smooth cut and eliminates possible chipping

I've never installed this stuff before I'm actually doing a patch from a repair otherwise I wouldn't do it at all I personally think this stuff's garbage I would much rather use HardieBacker siding. I noticed when I pulled down the soffit that it was full of wasp nest and I couldn't figure out how they got up in there until I seen you spend that one piece up around the edge and then the other one's going to dive into it and there's a gap there not much of one but big enough for a b ee

Just curious,, noticing you're starting this job out with "J channel" at the bottom like you stated to match up with the old siding,, why would the previous contractor have put up J channel as a starter strip instead of starter strip itself? It seems to me the J channel would hold water seeing how it's exposed to the outside of the material or at the very least,, hold enough in heavy downfalls to become somewhat of an issue whereby the starter strip located "underneath" the initial vinyl cladding wouldn't be that type of issue. Am I missing something here?
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 8 лет назад
The slab this addition was built on was actually sloped so the homes siding was started with a starter strip but as we move perpendicular away from the home our new siding follows the slope of the slab and so the bottom edge of the siding is changing as it goes.

Great video with lots of good tips for the DIY's out there. I have a 2 story house with brick lower level and wood sided upper level. I am going to put vinyl siding on over Masonite woodgrain siding, which are 4' x 9' sheets. My only issue is the old Masonite siding has wicked moisture at the bottom edge and is swollen in a few places. This is where the starter strip will be nailed/screwed to...do you think this will work out OK without making the first row or 2 of siding look bad? My only other choice is to cut the bottom of all the wood siding off and replace it with plywood. Your thoughts please and thank you!
@HouseImprovements
@HouseImprovements 10 лет назад
Usually the swelling I have ever seen is not anymore than maybe 1/4" and usually causes no trouble. If you have doubts just run a belt sander over it a little to flatten it out a bit more.

Another tip, if iseing a saw and cold out, i ise a plywood blade, put in backwards, keeps from chipping the siding espicaly when it is cold out.

I have to install expensive Onyx brand (not real onyx) walls in a 1960's house. Do you ever show how to properly scribe a wall as I'll only get one cut and I know the bottom part of the wall around the tub is narrower than the top. I know I have to trip the inside corner to get a straight outer wall panel edge but I'm not quite sure how to do it.

Awesome video Shannon!! Thanks for the great explanation. A friend just asked me to help him build a shed and the only part I've never done is the vinyl siding, but now I know how thanks to you. Cheers

I am deleting some giant windows and replacing with some human sized ones. Siding, framing, sheathing, windows, insulation, vapor barrier, drywall, the whole shameezle. Every single process I watch Shannons videos repeatedly. You deserve many praise, thank you so much. Stay gold.

So a very specific question, how do you finish the top of a gable wall with an angled soffit, do you still use under sill trim at the soffit, and crimp the siding with that special pliers?

By far, the BEST how-to video I've ever seen on any topic! No rambling, unnecessary intro or background or self stroking of ego, just clear concise information from the very start. The video answered all of the questions and concerns I had about how to install vinyl siding in the near future on a garage. Thank You! Keep teaching us!

Hello. Wonderful videos. Thankful for the content. If I may ask, how would you install vinyl siding around a “through the wall” air conditioner? In my case the wall it is through has no gables, just a small drip edge sticking out from the roof, about 1 ft above it. So no “covering” above the sleeve. I have 2 photos I can provide for clarity. Thank you for your time.

Been doing carpentry and the trades a long time. Master of none. But I do a good job because I care. This guy has all the characteristics most of my bosses along the way lacked. He doesn't assume you know a step or procedure, he shows and explains every step without extraneous words or information. So you can actually watch his 1/2 instruction video and feel CONFIDENT not confused. Also, his demeanor is engaging not necessarily entertaining. I'll watch Red Green for that! So thank you fella. I'm going out today to get started!!
