Installing XAMPP and WordPress on PC
XAMPP is a free and open-source cross-platform web server solution stack package developed by Apache Friends, consisting mainly of the Apache HTTP Server, MariaDB database, and interpreters for scripts written in the PHP and Perl programming languages. It is a simple and lightweight solution for setting up a local web server on your PC.
Step 1: Download and Install XAMPP
Download XAMPP: Go to the XAMPP website and download the version suitable for your operating system.
Install XAMPP: Run the installer and follow the setup instructions. You can choose which components to install, but make sure Apache, MySQL, PHP, and phpMyAdmin are selected.
Step 2: Start XAMPP
Open XAMPP Control Panel: Once installed, open the XAMPP Control Panel.
Start Apache and MySQL: Click on the "Start" button next to Apache and MySQL to start the local server and database server.
Step 3: Download and Install WordPress
Download WordPress: Go to the WordPress website and download the latest version of WordPress.
Extract WordPress: Extract the downloaded WordPress zip file to the htdocs directory inside the XAMPP installation directory (usually C:\xampp\htdocs on Windows or /Applications/XAMPP/htdocs on macOS).
Rename the WordPress Folder: Rename the extracted WordPress folder to something like mywordpress for easier access.
Step 4: Create a MySQL Database
Open phpMyAdmin: In your browser, go to localhost/phpmyadmin.
Create a Database: Click on the "Databases" tab, enter a name for your new database (e.g., wordpress), and click "Create".
Step 5: Install WordPress
Open WordPress Installation: In your browser, go to localhost/mywordpress (replace mywordpress with your folder name).
Configure WordPress: Follow the on-screen instructions to select the language and enter the database details:
Database Name: The name of the database you created (e.g., wordpress).
Username: root (default XAMPP MySQL username).
Password: Leave it blank (default XAMPP MySQL password).
Database Host: localhost.
Table Prefix: wp_ (default, you can change it if you want).
Run the Installation: Click "Submit" and then "Run the installation".
Setup Site Details: Enter your site title, username, password, and email address. Click "Install WordPress".
Getting to Know the WordPress Dashboard
Once WordPress is installed, you can access the WordPress Dashboard, which is the control center for your WordPress site.
Access the Dashboard
Log In: Go to localhost/mywordpress/wp-admin and log in with the username and password you set during installation.
Dashboard Overview: After logging in, you’ll see the WordPress Dashboard.
Key Areas of the WordPress Dashboard
Dashboard Home: This is the main landing page of the dashboard, providing an overview and quick links to various parts of your site.
Posts: Manage blog posts, add new posts, categories, and tags.
Media: Manage your media library, including images, videos, and documents.
Pages: Manage static pages, like "About Us" or "Contact".
Comments: Moderate comments left by visitors on your posts.
Appearance: Customize the look and feel of your site, including themes, widgets, and menus.
Plugins: Add or manage plugins to extend the functionality of your site.
Users: Manage user accounts with different roles and permissions.
Tools: Import and export tools, and other site management tools.
Settings: General site settings, writing, reading, discussion, media, and permalinks.
