I can understand the video 95% and without subtitles. I am a native Spanish speaker in South America, Chile. My English level has improved a lot since I started learning on my own, because I grew up very poor and I don't have money to pay for a teacher or classes and I don't have friends who speak English.

Hello... I think the problem is ,when the native speakers are speaking they reduce the words making a very short phrase.... We need to learn reduce words.. I think this is the better solution.

Awesome tips! Thanks, Stephanie. For me, definitely the way to go is to reduce anxiety. I'm getting more and more aware that emotions can totally block our mind from a correct judgment of the situation we are currently into.

Those are really good tips, I believe that pauses are very important to help us elaborate the sentences in our mind while we are talking. That's something that I'm even trying to do more often in my native language. Many people are afraid of the silence, but actually we shouldn't be, because when we pause and answer seconds after, we show confidence, which is also important. Thank you for the video.

I do have some old foreign worker or staff told me better you say things in english but themselves knows little of their own countrys language
@abbysands9510
@abbysands9510 Год назад
How do you master a language's rhythm once you've already conquered its sounds and fluency? Because you can master the sounds, vowels, and fluency, yet still speak with the rhythm of a different accent but with all the sounds of the American sound system. Let's consider my niece as an example: her passion for accents led her to effortlessly mimic the Australian accent, seamlessly aligning with its unique rhythmic cadence. The point I am trying to make is how do you get the music right after you've gotten the vowels and fluency right, because even if the vowels are wrong and you are able to get the language rhythm right, you are halfway there. You have probably heard instances where someone takes words from one song and sings them to the rhythm of another song. Ps I often hear people who are foreigners but speak with an American accent, sometimes with incorrect vowels, but the American rhythm-the music behind the words-is there even if the vowels are wrong.
@TheEnglishCoach
@TheEnglishCoach Год назад
I teach rhythm in depth in my Accent Freedom program. englishfulltime.com/waitlist-accent-freedom But basically, you have to realize that most languages are syllable-timed or stress-timed. English is a stress-timed language... so different words are longer or shorter, emphasized or reduced, when we speak. When you learn how to stress words correctly and reduce words correctly, you will be able to master English rhythm. This is why I teach "fast and connected speech" on my channel so much. Correct timing in language is probably the #1 thing that makes you sound natural. You can have correct timing with incorrect sounds, and you will still sound natural. But if you have correct sounds with incorrect timing, you won't sound as natural.

A question: when you speak on videos, do you speak very clearly, specifically to learners, or do you speak the same way you usually speak with your native friends? On a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is learners and 10 is native, which number do you think has the most to do with your speech in the videos? Thanks a lot!
@TheEnglishCoach
@TheEnglishCoach Год назад
I get this question a lot :) I tend to speak very clearly... that's just how I talk. BUT, I also improve that clarity for videos and presentations simply because I tend to support my voice more with my diaphragm and I'm trying to be as clear as possible. I do this in conversations though, too, like when I'm telling a story or explaining something and I want to be sure people understand me.
