Thanks very much for this video. I am pleased that I can read the Russian script. What purpose do the silent letters serve in Russian words? Is it to indicate where the syllable ends?

Do you mean the hard and soft signs? The first one is to make the sound harder (not palatalized) and, thus, separate the syllables (e.g. подъезд (porch) /pod (pause) jezd/ and not /podjezd/) and the soft sign is used to palatalize the consonant (мать (mother) /mat'/ with soft T unlike мат (swear word) with hard T)
