How To: Inverted Euro

Although the footwork is similar, the inverted eurostep is a completely different move from the original. Many of the top NBA guards use it, such as Russell Westbrook, James Harden and John Wall, just to name a few. It can truly be deadly with perfection. Check out a step-by-step tutorial above.

God I wished I had these videos growing up. Just tried some of the more advanced stuff at the gym, and as terrible and as out of shape as I am at basketball they still worked. People looked at me like I was a basketball savant, but in reality Charles Barkley would refer to me as "tuuurrible" Keep up the great videos. They are phenomenal.

Normal euro you just go from side to side. Inverted euro you jab to one side then go side to side, effectively allowing you to take """3""" steps.

I ref several games at varying degrees of competitiveness and can attest that James Harden's Inverted Euro is NOT a travel. It's a perfectly legal move albeit extremely difficult to pull off and I call travels on people when they get it wrong. Whenever they argue with me about the call, I simply say that the timing of his jab step was not perfectly instantaneous with his dribble and therefore a travel. Stay with me as I explain: James Harden @1:27 The thing I look for is if the ball handler takes a dribble AT THE SAME TIME he jab steps before his allotted two steps for the layup. For James, you'll notice that he power dribbles with his left hand while instantaneously (this is important) stepping with his right foot before he initiates his left and then right foot for the layup. If the left hand dribble is already on the way up BEFORE his initial right foot jab had lifted off the ground, then that would be a travel. This is one of the little technicalities regarding footwork that make you more dangerous if you remember them (kind of like why you hop when catch a pass in the post so you can choose your pivot foot before you attack). Exact same concept as when he does it in @1:50 Emmanuel Mudiay @1:55 Same concept as Harden. Look at the timing in which he dribbles the ball and takes that jab step with his right foot. The dribble happens instantaneously with the jab step, which therefore does not count as one of his allotted two steps. For all the folks saving Westbrook's move @2:05 is not a travel, it's really no different from Mudiays (except Russ chooses not to rotate his hip and leave his right leg trailing when he could have contorted it for a regular layup. which leaves me to.. Russell Westbrook @0:19 Notice in the slow mo how the dribble is already on the way up BEFORE that left foot jab actually touches the floor. In THIS case, this counts as his first of two allotted steps. If he had taken another step with his left foot that would have been a tough-to-see but illegal move. That's why making sure the ball touches the hardwood the same time your jab matters so you can get those two legal steps for the separation and layup.
@manug7957
@manug7957 4 года назад
Great explanations, I agree with all of it, except with Mudiay @1:54 - 1:55 he takes 2 quick jab steps before going into his inverted layup move. That’s a travel.

You're full of crap. At the 1:50 mark Harden has both hands on the ball and his right foot on the floor he then proceeds to to take two more steps after that before laying it in which is a travel. So sick of everyone acting like players today have reinvented the rules of basketball. It's garbage.

Harden more often than not escapes some traveling calls because of his way of Euro step. If you look more closely he sometimes dribbles then takes the jab step before he adds two extra steps for his Euro/inverted Euro step. Westbrook does it more cleanly with his strong first step then adds his dribble before changing directions executing Euro step. Either way it's a great escape move.

What those saying its a travel dont understand is the first step is with a DRIBBLE......if you know basketball rules, 2 steps are allowed after a dribble. its 3 steps yes, but step number 1 is along with the dribble. The move is amazing for drawing fouls as well because of the shiftyness involved doing it correctly.

00:18 it's more like a cross jab than a euro step 00:40 the set up- fake with eyes, attacking straight ahead into the lane of the retreating the defender 00:58 footwork - similar to the cross jab except without the crossover just a same hand pound and jab then you still have two steps to finish at the rim 1:42 selling it - pound the ball at the same time as the jab step, shifting your body along with mid section to create a lane 1:47 watch how hard makes the move in traffic. Right after the pound, he picks the ball up with two hands and makes his 1-2 step to layup (practice this, improves ball protection, score in traffic) 1:54 practice making the move and finishing with two feet 2:05 - 2 foot finish by Westbrook, he takes off from outside the circle

how to differentiate nba travelling call to other basketball leagues travelling calls..
@reemobrooklyn3557
@reemobrooklyn3557 7 лет назад
If you guys would just read the NBA rule book instead of getting your panties in a bunch about this travel bullshit. They changed the rule for almost a decade now. You are allowed a step when you are GATHERING the ball. Once the ball is gathered you can go into your 2 steps following the gather. They don't count the step when you are gathering the ball. Stop being stuck in the 90s and just deal with the fact that the game is evolving. It's just how it is now.
@nicolasl6945
@nicolasl6945 7 лет назад
However, it is not allowed in basically every other league. And that's the point. If you do this anywhere else than in the NBA (and I don't think everybody watching this is an NBA player) you will get called for a travel.
@reemobrooklyn3557
@reemobrooklyn3557 7 лет назад
Nicolas L but we're not talking about everywhere else. We're talking about the NBA. You can't say it's a travel based on every other league's rules. That's like saying MLB should throw underhand or use a bigger ball because other leagues do. That's rules and that's it. Euro Basketball league has some bullshit rules too, there league there rules.
@nicolasl6945
@nicolasl6945 7 лет назад
Reemo Brooklyn What is the point of a "How to" then? It is supposed to break down the move so others can do it. Now if those others can't do it in a game, because it's a travel by their league's rules, the move is useless. So the point here is that this is a useless "How to", because of the move bring a travel in just about every other league.

Not a single travel. you can pound the ball down on a step, gather it while going into your next AND still take another step. That's allowed in the NBA. Now sure, most of the world wouldn't much benefit from knowing this since it's basically not allowed anywhere else but in accordance to the league they're playing in, no one travelled in this video.

In the NBA, these moves are okay, since you're allowed to have a "gather step", followed by two steps. Harden is an expert in using this move. In other leagues, like in Europe or international play, this "gather step" is not mentioned in the rulebook, making it illegal. In this video, Westbrook uses a correct eurostep according to FIBA and NCAA rules. The eurosteps by Harden is okay in the NBA, but illegal in FIBA and NCAA.

The inverted euro is a bit similiar to the normal euro. When you attack straight the defender (for example after the pick and roll or in transition) you can do a jab in the one direction (fake with the eyes) and lean your body with the ball in the direction you jab but then step into the opposite direction.
