How To Invest: Lessons From The Greatest of All Time // I just finished listening to the audio version of How To Invest: Masters on the Craft by David Rubenstein, co-founder of The Carlyle Group, which is one of the largest private equity firms in the world (and number 6 on the 2022 PERE 100 list).
This book contains interviews with over 20 of the most successful hedge fund, private equity, and venture capital managers in the world, including names like Jon Gray from Blackstone, Larry Fink from BlackRock, and the legendary Sam Zell from EOP and Equity Residential.
I'll be the first to admit that not much in this book was particularly groundbreaking, but the real value I found in listening to these conversations were the patterns that came up among the beliefs and actions of these investors, many of which are very applicable to the real estate industry (and even building a career).
So to share what I learned and how you might be able to apply these lessons, in this video, we'll cover my 3 biggest takeaways from How To Invest by David Rubenstein, and what stood out most among the thoughts of some of the biggest successes within the investment world.

Another great book suggestion: The Net and the Butterfly: The Art and Practice of Breakthrough Thinking by Olivia Fox Cabane. It teaches you how to train your brain to have more Eureka insights. You don't have to be in a "creative" industry to benefit from this.

Excellent video (As always), Justin. It would be great a video on starting out in PERE vs REITs, pros and cons of each if I want to build my own company in the future. Regards from MX.

The problem with only interviewing successful investors is the survivorship bias. There are plenty of investors who went all in on their conviction and lost everything, way way way more investors fail than achieve the success of the few that were discussed.
