How to investigate and fix power steering pump noise

This is a case study of a 2007 Honda Accord with persistent power steering pump noise. I review how to diagnose the common causes, how to flush the power steering system, and in the end how to replace the power steering pump. I also discuss what I feel is the main reason Honda pumps are prone to power steering pump noise caused by air entry into the system.

Engineering will always be a series of compromises. The decision long ago to mount the power steering pump up high produced a tendency for air to be drawn into the system when O rings age. With the pump already high, there was no place to mount the reservoir higher. It's easy to blame the hardware. In the end, the tendency for old Honda steering pumps to make noise was a simple hardware placement issue.

I can't add anything to this excellent video for Honda owners. I can confirm the importance of staying with Honda fluid as you've done. I tried both Dexron ATF and later, a non-OEM fluid "for Hondas". Both resulted in occasional lack of assist in cold weather. However, the wrong oil was not responsible for any excess noise. Was there any evident failure on the old pump?

Functionally it seemed OK, although the owner later told me the power assist was better with the new pump. I think it simply had a pinhole air leak and lower high side pressure because of the compressible nature of air pockets. ErictheCarGuy here on RU-vid gave a stab at rebuilding one of these, and he put in hours of effort only to face the frustration of ongoing noise. So when the owner told me he was done with fiddling I said we should just replace it. Aside from the O rings, the intake hose (between the reservoir and pump) is worth a look. The one on this car looked fairly new. This vehicle had a recall replacement of the high pressure hose done years ago. Thanks for your kind feedback!
