One of the first things I was taught about ironing was to only use **distilled water** in any iron. Those of us who live in hard water areas and iron a lot could ruin an iron beyond repair in less than a year from the hard water build-up alone. I iron for two reasons: I find it very relaxing and like the instant gratification. Additionally, ironing inexpensive clothing can make them look like you paid double what you actually paid for them! Enjoyed the video and learned some new tips; thank you!

Shirt ironing order taught to me by someone who worked as an ironer in a shirt factory: collar, yoke, sleeve, sleeve, back, continue around to right (button) front of shirt , then finish with left (placket) front. This order ensures that an ironed section is not re-wrinkled in the process of ironing other areas.
@mariaseppanen3609

agreed...exactly the order I learned in seamstress school -78. (back of collar first then the front)

I do agree with this reply. First collar and then other parts to iron. Temparature of the iron box should alwys be kept in mind

It's important to pay attention to the heat settings on the iron to avoid the shine. This can also be avoided by using a damp piece of fabric placed over the pants (garment )and then pressing. Natural fabrics don't shine synthetics do. Starch can be applied to the wrong side of the garment to avoid starch residue.

I think it is a good ironing technique, but I would prefer to start with the coller and especially the sleeves. In my experience when the whole shirt is hanging from the sleep while you are doing the sleeve, there is greater chance that your shirt will get wrinkled a bit again. I like the tip about the starch on the back of the collar and also on the back of the buttons. I will try that moving forward. Great job!

Since most men are right handed, men's coats (and shirts) have the buttons on the right side so the wearer could unbutton his coat or jacket with his left hand while drawing his sword, which was worn on the left side, with his right hand. It's the same reason a horse is mounted from the left.Also, unless you live in an area with very soft water you should use distilled water in a steam iron (or plan on replacing the clogged iron every few years).

I guess you answered my question about the relationship between the steam and the starch. I tend to apply the starch and iron it with the steam and then turn the steam off and dry it up. I might give it a surge of steam if it doesn't look as crisp as I want it.

Perhaps it is because they are busy teaching them academics. How about PARENTS teaching their own children how to do these things. My... what a novel idea! If a parent does not know how to do something, then they are perfectly capable of learning how to do it themselves and passing that information onto their children. It is called PARENTING and it is what responsible grown-ups do rather than expecting someone else to raise your child to become a functional adult.

Do you have any videos that show how to use an iron? How to hold it and a technique, such as, moving side to side or keeping it pointy?
@PippiClaremont
@PippiClaremont 8 лет назад
My Mother taught me to start with collar inside, outside then its natural position. Then, as she says, paying extra attention to all seams (cuz you can iron a shirt all day long and it will wrinkle when worn but you can always tell it was well ironed by flat seams); Sleeves next (both sides). Then back upper panel below the collar. Then iron front moving shirt away from you, iron therest of back side finishing with the other side of the front. Done! This method works best with a board that doesn't have the iron holder on the wide end. (Worst invention ever!!) Doing most of your ironing from the pointed side just a few inches at a time is ignorant when larger sections can lay flat on the wide end. Cheers!

You missed the shoulder bit. I put one shoulder into the pointed end & then pull the other shoulder whilst ironing the whole strip. Other than that a great video to get a great result. The comments about reverse order make sense; doing the front panels last to get them crease free.

I've been told to avoid starch on very dark colors because it would cause a shine look to the shirts, is that correct?

+ThisNamesNowTaken That could very well be true. However, if you apply starch on the reverse side, like shown in the video, no one will see the area that's shiny.

Brothers, always starch cotton shirts or you will look like a slob. Use light starch for casual shirts and dark colors, and medium or heavy starch for dress and formal shirts. Starch will sometimes accumulate but this is easily remedied simply by washing a shirt before you send it to your laundry. A shirt that itches is a cheap shirt, starched or unstarched. Unless you are traveling, do not have your shirts folded since fabrics will wear more quickly along the fold lines. When putting on your tie, slide it under the collar instead of breaking the collar upward--that will reduce wear at the fold. I have all of my custom-made shirts starched, and they last for many years. Of course, they are made with two-ply, high-count cottons, not cheap one-ply cottons. Expect to pay at least $200 for 100-count cotton, and as much as $600 for 300-count Sea Island cotton. When possible, ask your shirtmaker to order enough fabric so that you have some on hand to replace the collar and cuffs. Some of my shirts have lasted ten years with replaced collars and cuffs. Another way to prolong the life of an expensive custom-made shirt is to always wear an undershirt, since perspiration is corrosive. One last point: Custom-made shirts use linings that you can't iron by hand, and must be professionally laundered using a "crush," the machine that presses a wet shirt and dries it simultaneously.

Big question, wearing chinos and jeans, after a long day I easily end up with a "ball" in the knee, meaning that the fabric around the knee, which doesn't look nice, and next day when I will take the pant it doesn't look nice and well, I ended up wearing pants once and then throwing them in the laundry, after that they recover their shape. Please, help, i don't like to throw them in the laundry so often but i don't know how to fix it!
@lisantrouble
@lisantrouble 8 лет назад
Before sitting down, give a little tug to the material of the pant, above the knee. Raising it about an half an to an inch. It will place the pant at a wider cut and/or leave a lesser indentation lower than the knee area. After sitting you can smooth the material back in place so it's not bunchy. I remember my grandfather teaching my brother this when we were young.
