I got away from jumper cables a few years ago. Jump boxes, booster boxes, whatever you want to call them have come a long way and are life savers and you do not have to depend on another vehicle.
@@LeeLee-gy7gpIt’s really not a waste of money. Sometimes the hardest part with cables is getting someone with another car to give you a jump. With a jump box you can jump your car at any secomd
You don't need the live battery car to be running to jumpstart the dead battery car. The correct way is to turn the ignition to position 1 on the dead battery car and wait at least 3 minutes, and then start it with the live battery car being completely off. On older cars, it's OK, but on newer cars that are full of electronics, having both alternators on can cause electrical damage.
Black on the dead battery shouldnt go on since it could start a spark making a fire. Find a metal area that is unpainted like a bolt or the frame. This does not go for the live battery.

Start a fire? 😅😅😅 Get your head out of theoretical books.
@@dockilat8722I've tried to jump some cars like that before and they wouldn't start. I connected the black to their negative(black) and the car started. Strange.
Never turn both vehicles at the same time because you will blow the computer, only turn on the good car the good batery let it run for about 10 minutes then turn off thw vehicle, disconnect the cables and then try to turn on the the car with the bad baterry ALWAYS DISCONECT THE CABLES BEFORE YOUR TURN ON THE BAD BATERY CAR, PLEASE ALWAYS DISCONNECT BEFORE STARTING THE BAD BATERY CAR. MY FATHER ALWAYS SHOW US THAT AND IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THIS. BLESSINGS TO YALL.
That’s not at all true and is a tale. That’s not how current works and I can promise you, you will not hurt anything by having both vehicles running while hooked up granted they’re both 12 volt and your not jumping a 12 volt vehicle with a 24 volt.
This video has dangerous information in it please do not ever do the procedure shown in this video. There are a lot of people like you who are looking for information that they did not get taught when they were young. This is not where you should be looking. Connecting the final black lead to the battery carries a very serious risk. Once a car battery is fully discharged it releases hydrogen gas. Connecting the final black lead to the battery negative terminal will cause a spark. If your battery is close enough to the end of its life and enough hydrogen gas has built up around it this will cause an explosion. This video is objectively dangerous and I am trying my best to get it taken down.
@@zachbaker1167 you should. I myself am in college for transportation technology. I plan to go on to study automotive engineering. Misinformation like this is dangerous and I really hate how irresponsible the poster of this video is.
Not all of them will have red connections, you can look at the battery and it should have a + or - symbol next to its posts to label them if both wires are black. A lot of newer cars also have specific posts for jump starting that are away from the battery for reasons as simple as the battery isn't in the engine compartment and for other reasons a lot of people have already said.
FOR ANUONE TAKING ADVICE PLEASE KNOW THE BLACK ISNT SUPPOSED TO GO ON THE NEGATIVE FOR THE DEAD BATTERY ITS SUPPOSED TO GO ON A METAL PART OF THE CAR THAT CAN GROUND THE ELECTRICITY PLEASE LOOK UP HOW TO JUMP YOUR SPECIFIC MODEL OF CAR
Putting the negative jumper cable on the battery can fuck your computer in your car so have it on a piece of metal or some sort of ground then jump the battery so it doesn’t fuck your computer for your car
I have jumped batteries a dozen of times before ever even hearing this suggestion. Everything went fine... with having said that you are totally correct.
You really shouldn't listen to this guy. Following this advice is likely to cause an explosion. As a car battery loses charge it releases hydrogen gas. The closer to the end of the batteries life the more gas it releases. Connecting the final black lead to the negative terminal of the dead battery causes a spark. That spark will ignite the gas and blow you up. You should be connecting the final lead to a bare piece of metal far away from the battery and any electronics. This information is dangerous and this man is an idiot.
Looks like this DAD can afford a new vehicle is hi meses up, I rather do more research, he clearly said hi is not a professional, also technology is way different now days, and vehicles are not what the use to be, you need to be very careful or you can damage electronic components easily, better be safe than sorry
I had to use my cables for the very first time a few days ago after i accidentally left my hazards on for a few hours after parking. I bought my cables several years ago, and they have been sitting in my trunk in a little self-made kit untouched until that point. What a lifesaver because it was freezing out late at night, and i was lucky to have someone come to jump me.
@@TWOhype23 I did this enough that I designed an automatic headlight system for my car. Bought a 12v photocell, a wifi timer module, some relays, and made it all work. I had to throw the photo cell under the center stack around the ash tray area because the sensor picked up too much light and wouldn't turn the headlights on until it was pitch black out. Having the sensor mounted just under the dash made it work until one night lightning almost struck my car and it shorted out something in the control circuit and it blew a fuse and left me driving in the dark with my hazards on. They build all sorts of redundancy in automatic head light systems but now I own a car that has automatic headlights and haven't thought about it again.
Last month my daugther call me 2000 km away at mid night asking help as her friend's car cannot start. I had to give instruction to her via video call to do the battery jumping correctly. Her mother pass away when she was 1 year old.
⚠️ DON’T attach the black to the actual battery! Find another grounded area! Also, make sure BOTH cars of OFF before turning on the car that will be used to jump the other (dead) one! You need to update your education and get a jump pack - car to car jumps are NOT needed and much LESS SAFE, esp when dealing with kids or anyone inexperienced! It’s sweet you care though. Never teach your daughter to rely on someone else, ESPECIALLY a stranger, or she’ll get taken advantage of - or worse!
You don’t need to let it run to give it a charge. Have it off instead that way the battery isn’t trying to keep 2 engines going at once. You’ll have better chances at knowing if it’s a battery issue, alternator, or wiring issue.
Get yourself a Noco battery jumper. Better than cables and small like a phone so you can easily put it away in your car and use it when you need it. Plus you don’t have to worry about cables not reaching!
but remember to check them and recharge if needed, every month or so, otherwise the battery equipment law kicks in - when you need it, it will be flat!
you have to use the boost button or on some jump packs there is a button sequence that tells the battery to jump it regardless of low voltage.@@SuperMayankdogra
Nothing beats the real deal cables yes the pack is a good idea but always keep real cables too, I’ve had a little suv not start off a big jump pack and the cables only worked sometimes you need to power of going up in rpm on the donor car

she looks like she is just hiding her face but is paying attention to everything he is saying. You know how us girls can be about being on camera without makeup or hair done... i think you are misreading her initial body language just because at first she is hiding her face. However, if you observe closely, she seems to be hiding behind her father but she's very much engaged in right there with her hands ready to help. As far as I can see, she's right there ready to help when he first hands her the cables. And also, when he goes to connect the second vehicle, she has the cables ready and hands the cables right back to him right as he needs them. It just seems to me like she's just hiding behind him because she might be embarrassed she doesn't have her hair and make up done or something. ... Believe me if that was a girl taking her dad for granted she would just be like barely engaged not listening to anything he was saying looking bored being dramatic etc. This girl just looks like she's hiding herself behind her father... but otherwise is very attentive and engaged in helping.

Black/dead side usually goes to ground, and they usually recommend having the 'good' car running already, THEN connect the cables. That way, you don't stress the donor battery. But this will work and you won't blow anything up, so it's good enough!! 😊

It’s good to have usb rechargeable “PORTABLE JUMP STARTERS”. They’re a game changer! No need for two cars 🚗 🚘 to jump one inactive vehicle 🚗. I threw away my jumper cables this year.
This video is just dangerous and needs to be taken down. There are legitimately people in this comments section defending connecting the final lead directly to the battery. This video most likely got someone killed.
Some people will say it doesn’t matter if you ground the negative cable. Only time I have ever seen jumper cables melt (not even cheap ones) was when someone attached both cables to both batteries. So yeah, I ground it.
Cautions! Please Guys Use Red Clamp To Red Terminal Batery Which is normal.. BUT Black Clamp To Car Body Or Part That METAL! NOT To Black Terminal Batery!! Why? Simple For Modern Car up to 80 part controlled Electronically!.. So The Highest Chance To Effected Is Your Transmission Control! ( That Simple Mistake Cose Hundred Of Dollar )
Procedure is not ok. Correct steps to be followed are: Switch off all electrical items in both the cars. Switch off the ignition and take out the keys from both the cars. Connect one end of the Red jumper cable to the Positive (+) terminal of the dead battery, mostly Red. Connect the other end of the Red jumper cable to the Positive (+) terminal of the good battery, mostly Red. Connect one end of the Black jumper cable to the Negative (-) terminal of the good battery, mostly Black. Connect the other end of the Black jumper cable to some unpainted metallic part of the car with the dead battery. Note: For safety do not use the Negative (-) terminal of the dead battery. Start the car with the good battery and let it tun for some time. Now start the car with the dead battery. It should start. If it doesn't wait for some more time and try again. If it still doesn't start call a mechanic. Disconnecting the jumper cables should be done in the reverse order of the connecting sequence.
The first thing you need to know is that this does not apply to all cars. There are 24V cars and EV's that have low-voltage battery but often can't be used to start other cars. My EV has a small 16V battery with a small connector, no where to connect jumper cables.
Likewise. But nowadays, there is so much plastic under the hood that you can't find any good metal and sometimes I end up going negative to negative. I was warned about batteries blowing up.💥
@Steve Rudder yeah it can be hard to find metal on newer cars. I'm lucky I have an old car. 🤣 And same here, but the only battery I ever actually see pop was on charge in my old workshop 😅
I'm tow truck driver I do this for a living You make sure that the live battery vehicle is on before you make the connection because if you hook up to the dead battery and the vehicle's not running it can automatically short the live battery and you'll be in a position where your car won't start! You always hook up the live battery first and then hook up the negative the dead battery not simultaneously life battery both hooked up positive negative and then hook up the positive homework dead battery and then the negative
Red and black on the battery of the car being jumped, red on the battery and black to a ground that isn't the negative battery terminal on the car doing the jumping. The alternator usually has a bracket to clamp to, if not, the body will work, the engine will work, the frame will work.
Thank you so much!!!’n Me and my Buddy had to use this video to jump my car today We had to hitch a ride to get to his car but we were able to jump my car with his Thank you so much your a true lifesaver ❤❤❤
The negative on the "dead" battery needs to go onto the body of the car (assuming it's a negative earth system) to create a potential difference across the starter motor.
That's the safest way to do it, but it's still not common knowledge. Most cars made in the early 2000s or before will be just fine, but if the car you are using to jump the dead one is a newer model, you run the risk of short circuiting the electronics on it by directly connecting both negative terminals. Instead, by connecting the negative terminal to a separate component on the dead car (a nut/bolt or piece of metal not directly connected to the dead battery), the risk of a short circuit is basically zero. So to recap, you should: 1) Make sure both cars are off 2) Connect the red clips to the positive (+) terminals on BOTH batteries 3) Connect the black clip to the negative (-) terminal on the GOOD battery 4) Connect the other black clip to a SEPARATE metal piece of the car that is being jumped and NOT to any other part of the dead battery 5) Start the engine on the jumper car, let it run for 5-10 minutes, then try starting the dead car 6) If it starts up, leave the engine running while you safely disconnect the clips, one at a time in the reverse order
Black to ground for dead battery is safer BUT these days most engine bays are covered in plastic including the engine so getting a good ground isn't easy or common sense. Stg true story, saw some folks trying to jump start a car and when I walked up they said there was no point as it wouldn't start. Saw the black hooked up to plastic engine cover, switched it over to the battery and it started easy. So black to ground on dead safer for electronics Black to black on dead for the average American intelligence
This is correct. When a battery charges and discharges, it creates hydrogen gas, which is explosive. When the last jumper cable connects, there is typically a small spark which let's you know all cables are connected. If the vehicle has been sitting in an area with little air movement, there is a small chance the spark could ignite the gas, causing an explosion. Typically, the battery is low on water, creating a storage area for gas buildup, and if the vent tube on the battery is disconnected, allowing the gas to be close to the terminal. Not all batteries are serviceable, but if yours is, be sure to mix baking soda and water to rinse off the outside of the battery first. Once there is no fizzing, wipe dry and let air dry. Then, get distilled water and pop the caps off the battery. This will vent the hydrogen gas. Then fill each cell 90% full or about 3/4" from the top of the hole. Put the caps back on, then start charging. Be safe. Don't blow your ass up.
Perfect and one more step NEVER RUN THE CAR WHILE STARTING THE DEAD BATTERY!! IT KILLS THE ALTERNATOR!! Charge for about 5-10 min while car is running , then turn off the car, then start the dead battery car.. 👍
another video said black to ground is not necessary with newer jumper cables because they dont spark. Dont know if that is true or not but thought I would mention it since I saw people arguing about this lol. I have only done black to black on my car but I was using a nolo jumper so not sure if that makes a difference.
You should never start the car that’s donating the power. The alternators can work against each other and burn out the electric parts. You were correct in the way to connect, but do not ever start the car that is the donor car.
Im no electeictian but what i was taught has always made sense to me. Can someone explain why you put the hot lines on before grounding? I was taught connect negatives to ground first. Not on the batterries. But connect dead side black to a bit of metal then connect live side negative. Then dead side red. And finally red side live. The reason it makes sense to me is that you keep the cables from being "hot" until the last steps. Am i wrong? And if so, how?
_Correct Way To Do It_ 1. Red(Dead) to Red(Charged) 2. Black(Charged) and ground the other black(Dead) And removing is vise versa, meaning the opposite of how you did it. *Also to be safe, you should never connect two positives with two negatives which makes a closed circuit and will cause a fire and melt the jumper cables LIKE IN THIS VIDEO*
For who wants to know what happens when you connect red to black: it burns cable and welds cables beacouse of short circuit. if you know better about the electricity works: it just drags alota amps tru than it burns cable to nothing melts and sparks
Last connection you make with the black cable should be to a ground at least 6 inches away from the battery. Anything metal and not connected to anything else is a ground.
now days with complex electronics, jumper cable is thing of the past when a good portable jumper battery cost $50 that can be carry in the car along with other emergency kit. I just charge the battery couple times a year just to have a full power ready to go if need for jumping, charging portable electronics, etc.
I've never used cables, but I've used jump packs a ton in the past.. are you supposed to ground a jump pack too? I've always hooked it up to both terminals and never had any issues, but that's just what I was told to do.
Thanks for the information, But it shouldn't be done like that anymore. Because new cars have these computer Motherboards, that you could burn it out. By jumping the vehicle battery to battery.
Very true. It doesn't happen often, but it is always a possibility. As an extra precaution, simply connect the other black clamp to a separate part of the dead vehicle and NOT directly to the negative (-) terminal on the dead battery. A nut or bolt or other metal part of the car can be used as a ground instead, which will help prevent a short circuit.
When starting the dead car, make sure the vehicle being used to jump start isn’t running. Having two alternators spinning against each other can cause damage to the electronics
So if you don't know. Why are you spreading bad information. Never have the car running when you try to start the dead car. And the dead battery negative should not be attached to the battery but to ground on the car.
Negative black cable on the dead car side should connect to a grounded component of the car. Otherwise you could short the car your using to jump the dead one.
Never leave the car with the good battery running because the alternators are running at the same time after the jump, this guy ought to go back to pushing pencils
My dad never taught me this, he always assumed that would be something i learned in school and i did learn red posivoe and black negative in school. Rarely had to ask for help after getting my first car. Once i was sick and my alternator died and i had a toold box my dad gave me in the back and took off the alternator, and got a used one for like 10 bucks and took a bus back to my car, installed it and went home to make soup. Took literally like 30 mins.
This procedure can be super helpful in an emergency. We have always done it over the years with good success. However, it comes with certain risks. The alternator can actually get "hit". I learned the hard way. A few weeks after attempting to give someone a jumpstart, I had to get my alternator repaired, and also replaced my starter. And the worst part is, the disabled vehicle I was trying to help, never actually started. I understand that a better thing to have done was ground the jumped cable on the body of the engine. The best way to help someone whose car won't start is to actually take your battery out of your car and put it in theirs. Perhaps we should be thinking about investing in a suitable car jumper kit. (And PLEASE keep it fully charged at all times)
You can do black to black or black to ground don't really matter it works the sane. I've heard that black to ground is more of a saftey measure in case something would short, but I've never seen or heard of it happening.
Nah this dude got it right. I just tried it the "correct way" but since the battery was dead af, connecting the final connection to ground or engine block did not work at all. Tried letting it charge for 10 mins as well (nothing) when I mean dead, I mean the battery is completely winter damaged. You have to essentially use the donor battery to start the engine, which results in hooking up black to black. Also if that doesn't work, then you have have to start up your donor. This happens if you are using a passenger car trying to start up a dead battery truck or SUV, and there's simply not enough juice. Honestly modern car makers are so dumb.
