How to Keep a Wood Stove Burning All Night Long

In the Northeast we are experiencing a Bomb Cyclone which has temperatures hovering around 5°F - 10°F. Here is how I keep my Wood Stove burning all night long without having to keep putting wood in it. I cut discs that are approximately 2-4 inches thick and anywhere from 8-14 inches round.

We used to cover hot coals with ash and barely crack the air intake. We call that “banking” a fire for later. You stir it around and put more wood on it 10, 12, or even more, hours later and it will fire right back up. No having to start a fire from scratch. It might not put out as much heat while it’s ash covered but it does put out enough heat to maintain already achieved comfort levels.

Thise rings hold their integrity and the air flow helps slow and steady the burn. I do a similar style. People who don't "live" with wood heat as a primary source of heat never learn these tricks. I married a lumberjack...it is just life lol.
@russg1801
@russg1801 5 лет назад
This is called using "sleeper" logs - yeah, you need a hot stove to start with then control the draft. I'd suggest having something to move heat OFF the stove so less of it goes up the flue...IOW, a fan pushing air over that stove and moving it into the living space. A heat recovery unit on the vent pipe helps, too.

What kind of wood are you using? Is it a heavy, dense type of wood, or a lighter, less dense type of wood? While this might be a common thing that most people "should" know, I think it's an important thing to mention, especially for people browsing the internet who want a quick tutorial, but have never made a fire before.

The discs he used are white oak. Which in my experience burns longer than red oak. Burning in a disc like this you are burning cross grain which also helps burn time. You can burn burl or knots to also get long burn times. You can also cook a baked potato inside the wood stove,,, just saying. Lol

I know i'm a little late to the party, but I am wondering what temperature your flue gets up to burning that amount of fuel in one go? How do you keep the temperature in the safe zone? I know if I filled my stove up like that it would make the flue glow orange and burn my house down
@ragingbull1267

Closing down the damper and having an air tight stove are key to controling the temp. If you have an old style stove they suck in so much air you cant regulate them.
@mortsdans

Those big rounds also have less surface area to burn. The same amount of wood loaded in smaller split logs would produce more heat for a shorter duration of time.
@ramseybenachour
@ramseybenachour Год назад
Im even more late to the game...but I worried about this prior to installing my flue. I ended up insulattingit with that white kiln insulation material that can handle direct heat of up to 2500 degrees. Used that stuff for the first 15 feet of the flue and then rockwoom for the final 5 feet or so. You could hold your hand up to the insulation when the stove is burning at its hottest, and you wouldn't even feel it. Its cliche, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I run my little Vermont Castings stove the same way, and it goes overnight. I save the largest, thickest logs for the overnight burn and shut the damper most of the way down. In fact, my stove runs almost continuously from late October until March every year. It will only go out if I don't get up on time and tend to it in the morning.

Cool. My stove also goes eight hours. I get a nice coal bed like you did, I pack the heck out of it with big pieces and shut the intake and exhaust flaps. In the morning I open the exhaust and then the door. I have a warm house, stove, and a bed of coals. I put kindling in and fire up again. Every afternoon I let it die out. I clean the ashes, fire up, cook food and get the house warmed up as the temperature drops. At night pack it up again. Good for you and F your disbelievers, they can’t run their stove right and are pissed at how inept they are.

I've used wood heat for every bit of my 49 years. The only source of heat in the house. Several things combine to give the burn time and heat output. 1) wood species (kind of tree the firewood is cut from), my personal favorite is Osage Orange/Boise D Ark/Hedge, all names for the same species of tree. Second is Hackberry. 2) size/diameter of the wood, and rather it's split or full round. 3) seasoned or green wood. 4) stove: damper position ( part that allows or restricts smoke going up the flue/chimney), vent position (part that allows or restricts air coming in to the fire), and how air tight the body of the stove is (leaks act as extra sources of oxygen for the fire). Bonus control can be from twisted or knot pieces of wood, as well as the crotch where limbs branched from each other. (They burn slower than straight grain pieces).

I have a very small Drolet stove in a cabin. Just before bedtime I'll put one half-log on hot coals, then another large piece on top of the first one. That will last about 7 hours, leaving hot coals for a nice morning fire. In general for any stove, small pieces equal quick hot fires, large pieces equals slow cool fires.

I have the Jotul that will provide efficient heating for 10hrs...the only thing I do is push the coals to the side and pile my rounds in the center...so its more of a top down burn cycle(maintains 300 until around 8 hr mark which is the optimum temp for my stove). I don't need lots of heat as my walls and roof are 10" SIPs....I think people are confused with wood heat terminology, If they don't see a flame they think its not producing enough heat...burn time definitions are different for everyone; For me its when my house temp drops below 65....which takes a very long time....(Canada)

The bigger the log that you can fit in your stove the better. I feel split wood is only good for getting the fire started. Once it's started and nice and hot put in the biggest logs u can fit. Split wood burns through way too fast. I can fit 24" long by 24" diameter logs in mine. I throw one of those bad boys in there and burns forever. Plus I'm just loading one nice size log def a Time saver.
@alantaylor6691
@alantaylor6691 4 года назад
Does a stove burn hotter when you put those big logs on, or hotter when you put split pieces on? Because I live in a small cottage and I'm struggling with this place getting too hot with this big stove.
@alantaylor6691
@alantaylor6691 2 года назад
@Hardware John makes sense. If I stack my stove full before bedtime it’s still running the the next morning although it seems many stoves don’t do that. Mine is older so maybe they burn longer. Even the next night I’ve still got hot coals to start up the new fire, and even the day after that if I don’t feed it earlier. But it seems with lots of stoves they are stone cold by the next morning. I’m thinking those stoves might not keep burning those full logs, smothering

Also use what I call dog knots chunks that won’t split I chunk up with chainsaw,forks and knots .Full not split logs work 5 or 6 in rounds 2 or 3 bottom front to back smaller rounds on top whatever will fit . If you heat with a wood stove you will figure it out or be cold .That is ok to if you have a nice warm body to cuddle. So winter has its benefits! Stay safe, stay warm!

You can also risk (with Flue pipe damper wide open) a chimney fire. The heat with all the oxygen and pull up from the heat exiting the smoke stack will pull flames up and out into the chimney and burn creosote. But they all depends on your set up.

DON'T BE A FOOL ! They tell you you don't need a big stove, and they never tell you how little heat will come from it when you need it. Just make sure you have a big enough stove that is efficient at burning wood, and definitely a fire will last 20 + hours as mine does, and that is in the winter, Go for a stove with a catalytic burner in it, Makes a difference, Winter time when it's 30 C below, I load my stove maybe 3 times a day, and that means I still got lots of burn before it is all burnt, Unfortunately it would be 28 C during the day in the house, if I'm loading it 3 times a day, so I load it maybe twice. And I have to open a window all to often, Don't get sucked into buying a small crappy stove as you will be labor intense putting wood into it all hours of the day, WAKING UP AT NIGHT TO KEEP THE FIRE GOING I can load my stove in the morning and go away all day and come back late at night and there is still lots of coals and the house is toasty warm,

Is his stove a regular stove with the secondary burn or does it have a catalytic chamber?

In the classic sense, you should place the wood tightly and "starve" the wood once it ignites. In other words, keep oxygen away from it to the point where it burns only slightly. This could extend the fire by 300%. I once made a fireplace fire with 3 logs (9"x24") and closed the vent nearly completely. Those 3 logs burned for 16 hours! (needed 1 restart...)

Not necessarily. If you "starve" the fire of oxygen it will not throw off any heat.

I lay them in cut about 16" long not the same way CHARMCITY187 lay his end grain on the coals. The best I got out of a round was somewhat over 12 hours it was a large dogwood round. The problem dogwood is it kind of stinks as it burns. In my boxwood stove, I feed one small round (about the size of the fat end of a baseball bat) on a hot bed of coals with a large round (around the thickness of a coffee can). Them rounds burn nice and slow in my stove. Also, many of the rounds will split open on their own while drying and that is when you know that stack is good and ready to burn well.
