I live in the UK and keep my 3 cats indoors. They are so much more relaxed than the indoor/outdoor cats I've had previously during childhood. People here think it is cruel, but so many cats get run over, stolen, poisoned or injured by evil people over here too. I have a catio for mine, numerous beds, cat posts, a cat tree, scratch pads and lots of toys!
@hannajung7512
@hannajung7512 2 года назад
I thought it is cruel for the longest time, too. But honestly... we keep our dogs indoor and on leashes, too. And I am absolutly positive, that dogs would be happier if they could roam free outside as well... but for dogs everyone understands that that is a bad idea and instead we developed a huge bunch of activities for dogs as substitute. I hope this attitude changes in Europe, because cats are a real problem for biodiversity, simply because they are so many, and their prey shrinks in numbers every year and will be gone if we don't increase our efforts to protect them. (Exception: rats).

I niverunderstand why people keep digs tightly controlled but cats are just let out if the door. Weird. Mine love their enclosed garden and I have peace of mine. Especially in the current climate of what may be coming to us all. Stock up on pet food folks.

As a person living in Europe / The Netherlands I agree on keeping cats indoors. I grew up with cats that would be outdoor cats and only one of the 4 cats we had made it past the 10 years and the rest of them tragically passed away. So I'm more than happy to see my own cats still happily jumping around in their senior years inside my living room :)

Same. I don't have cats yet (planning on having in a few years when me and my partner will live on our own) and it's really sad when the cats (or dogs really) are just left alone to run outside and there is little to no catification done inside the house. The resulting aggression (from not having territory) is just heartbreaking.

I had a cat that always stayed outside, under the carport ,never roamed ,she was a rescue . she would allow us to vet her and things that had to be done. She lived to 28 years old! In the end she was inside with me , diapered , and she would let me know she loved and appreciated our time. This calico died in my arms and has a marble marker under my fig tree in her favorite place. I have rescued cats my whole life and this 'save' that was distant and a little neurotic was the best.

See if your "outside" cat would be willing to use a backpack like my cat does. We have a clear, hard sided on the left and right unit from Pet Seek which is excellent. She gets to see everything but is protected. We go everywhere with it, even to restaurants. Funny thing is, we get almost as many comments from men as we do from women. It brings a smile to all around without endangering the cat.

Yeah, dad and stepmom had 3 of their cats that were indoor/outdoor. Coyotes moved in and got one, couple of years ago. So, the other 2 became full time indoor like it or not. The younger one still wants to bolt for an open door now and again. But, it has seemed as he has gotten older less interested in doing so.

I would also like to remind folks that the only living thing that has the same energy as a kitten...is another kitten. Adopting two at a time provides great companionship and learning opportunities for them, and means you sometimes get to watch them rolling around and racing each other on the living room floor instead of having to provide appropriate play. I love watching cats play together, preferably with a senior cat on my lap :)

My exotic shorthair furbaby's are always on the watch for a window being left open a bit too much, so they can jump into the garden. I can't build a catio as I'm in an apartment. To. me that's a little bit mean.... we need to think of the the kitty cats well-being, not just ourselves.; but their happiness too. so I always try to encourage people to take at least two if not three but at least two so they'll have each other...... if a person or family only wants to take one I won't do it and I tell them the reasons why. they are better together to have another feline there of their own kind. Yes we can love them and show them attention but not constantly. When another of their own kind is there they can play and cuddle together!!!

That reminded me of my time when I still live in a Gated Community. Theres some Karen and a couple of stubborn old coot lived there that "own" outdoor cats. One day, many households put complain about problems related to cats over population. I also have cats, so I'm tried to be a good member of community and pitch in for solution. Im actually already suspicious that those Karen and Old Coots said nothing (it's obvious that the cats is theirs), while the Karen's husband basically said that they're fine with everything and will follow the community decision. Ended up on voting whether to let each household to deal with it by themselves or to force cat owners to put their cat indoors... ALL vote agree on cat being indoor. A week after that, Old Coots refuse to keep cat indoor because "its how they always do", the security that tasked to catch any cat that run out is too cowardly to actually catch the cat, while the Karen's cat somehow went "missing" while they grumble about the Community decision being too authoritarian... shitheads dont even say anything in discussion yet expect us to respect them. Just keep reminding to keep the cats indoor and, if it really bother you, try to get local animal lover community involved.

I have had 18 cats. So clearly I have watched over several deaths. The worst thing I have done was to keep them going once I realized that they were not well. Cats are amazingly tough, and they will not show pain or discomfort. Recently my 16 year old cat began to show signs of sickness, and the vet said that she was deathly ill. After many previous experiences, I was wise to the event, and I had the vet give her the shots to take her life before, thank God, she really started to suffer. I will never again prolong my cat’s life just so that I can spend more time with him or her. It is very important for us to recognize our responsibility in this matter.

It's important to keep in mind that a lot of places (like new Zealand and Australia) have native birds whose populations are being thinned out by cats, so keeping your cat indoors could help save endangered species

In Australia its illegal to have cats outside at night or at all in some areas. Its not just native birds but marsupials, reptiles, amphibians and basically anything that moves that's threatened by cats.

Not just Australia. The United States is estimated to house a population of 60-80 million cats, and they are estimated to kill 2.4 billion birds per year, making them the leading human-caused threat to the survival of bird species in the country. - Wikipedia

came to mention this! cats are considered invasive in MANY places (including but not limited to the US and Australia) so please be sure to do your research if you are thinking about allowing your cat to go outdoors. i think harness training would be a great alternative since you can monitor your cat's behavior and they still get to enjoy the outdoors! also PLEASE do not let the animal societies who claim cats are not invasive to fool you, they absolutely ARE invasive and the people who lead those kinds of programs often have no idea what they are talking about. only trust reputable scientific journals and peer-reviewed articles in regards to topics concerning invasive species :)

I recently got a new kitten because I felt like my other cat was lonely by herself. I followed Jackson's instructions on how to introduce them and they are starting to become friends! All three of us have hung out on the sofa a few times. Recently, I was painting a wall and wouldn't let them into that room while I was doing so (or while the paint dried), I came out to them snuggling on the sofa. It's been the best decision. I feel like my family is whole now.

I am so glad we adopted two kittens. They definitely have their moments, but they get to "cat" together which I think is really fulfilling for them. If we're both at work, they still have someone to play with, and we all get to snuggle up together on the couch or bed which is especially nice in winter. This is the first time I've ever had more than one cat, and I don't think I would ever go back to having only one. Our two are almost 12 and I can't imagine life without them. I know they'll leave us one day, but I'm thankful we gave them this life and for the life they've given us.

I've been taking my cat Sadako for walks in her harness since she was a kitten, and she loves it. Goes out at least four times a day. But this had an unexpected benefit. My roomate's cat, Jade, has always been an indoor cat who was terrified of beyond the door. However, seeing Sada going out and enjoying herself has encouraged Jade to follow out on the porch. She won't wear a harness, and is freaked out by grass, but she will beg to be picked up and carried around the yard.

"if the introduction is done well you're gonna be just fine" YES! My older cat doesn't seem to like other cats. But we did the introduction like you said in your book and now she tolerate the new cat haha. They can sleep next to each other (without touching), eat next to each other, and sometimes they play by running behind one another so that's a huge win!! The cat that I thought was gonna be an only cat for her entire life can tolerate her little sister and I'm so so happy with that. thank you Jackson.

It's funny but much of what Jackson says of keeping your cat curious, occupied and in touch with thier 'raw Cat', was how I grew up with family cats. Me and my siblings just played with them all the time. Made puzzles and games, asault courses all over the house. It just seemed natural. We were learning about play and problem solving together. And had 3 happy healthy cats.

Routine for sure. My almost 20 year old stinker wasn’t locked into a routine until I was able to get him transitioned to wet, good quality food (on your advice!). He loves his puréed wet food so much that he keeps trying to push his feeding time earlier and earlier n the morning. If I’m not up by 5:45, he wails continuously until I get up to feed him. We took in a family members cat that needed a new home, but kept her away from the other cats, because one of our cats was coming to the end of her long life. When she passed the dogs and the younger cat became very depressed. We waited a couple of weeks and opened the basement door. After two months or so, the young cat ventured downstairs and stayed there to visit the new cat. The younger cat has suddenly matured and seems happier and calmer. Having another cat for him, really made a difference. No more solo cats for us.

I totally get you on the cultural differences of owning a cat. I grew up in Europe and all my cats were mostly outdoor cats. It was beautiful to see them as they would be “in the wild”, running and climbing trees. Now that I am in the US, however, my cat is 100% indoors, it depends on where you live, but I wouldn’t let him out and about, I am pretty sure he won’t come back safe.

When we lived in France (rural and also in suburban areas) I never had to worry about outside. Now in USA in a (nice) suburban area I’d never ever let our 2 rescue kittens out. Too many cars and coyotes, foxes, hawks etc. Plus the vet who had rescued them insisted they stay inside. I completely agree. They love the house. Lots of big windows for cat tv and staircases to run up and down and lots more besides. Can i really let them out the door and think I might never see them again??? No way.
