I didn't have enough newspaper the last time I did this so I cut open yard waste bags, spread them out and then covered that with mulch. Yard waste bags decompose quite fast.

Don't know about safe for humans, but it breaks down quickly in the soil,
@VAghahe1985

It's very dangerous for human consumption. But in soil it decreases over time. I had to do a lot of research to make sure my soil is healthy before gardening in it, since I was suspicious that glyphosate and roundups had been used on my soil. I was relieved knowing that those things has left the soil by now.

Glyphosate is not even close to being as safe as vinegar. That is awful

@@Gardenfundamentals1 i have seen studies and actual pictures of what it does to our intestinal lining and it is not good. It's also water soluble so it can not be removed. It kills beneficial bacteria in the soil and its impossible to ever are so many of these farmers and people living off the Mississippi river sick with cancer now? Gmos to withstand glyphosate also block a pathway in plants to create an essential amino acid that we need from the food. Its irresponsible for the FDA and anyone else to claim it is "safe".
@alittlepreachy
@alittlepreachy 3 года назад
This is what im talking about "One of the reasons glyphosate is so safe is that it only affects a well understood biochemical pathway called shikimate, which is found in plants but not animals. This is the reason it is not toxic to animals. The shikimate pathway is found in some bacteria that live in our gut." That pathway makes things we NEED because we can not make them. They are used in our body for cells to communicate, if cells can not communicate then we get cancer.

@@Gardenfundamentals1 Glyphosate is less ACUTELY toxic than vinegar, but the LD50 is not really the relevant metric here because we're not out in the garden drinking quarts of glyphosate. I see this point shared a lot and I think it's misleading. The concern is that it is carcinogenic, and we're much more likely to breathe it in than we are to drink it. There's also the concern that it kills soil microbes and/or gut microbes. The research is still divided on these topics, and the article you link makes the mistake of taking the lack of consensus around the issue AS proof of a consensus that it's safe. I think it's irresponsible, given that there are still reputable sources reporting that it's a probable carcinogen, to say that it is certainly, absolutely safe. At minimum, you should exercise great care when using it - wear a respirator, gloves, long sleeves; don't apply on a windy day; don't over-apply. And if you'd like to err on the side of caution, just don't use it at all, particularly in a food garden, until there's more of a consensus in the scientific community.

What they said. Research on the gut biome is really just starting to take off. They have learned more in the last 5 or so years than in the last 50 years. "Safe" means so much more than how much will kill you.

Herbacide sounds good but it only works when plant is actively growing. Its February now and a great time in North Texas for outside work. Most plants are dormant now and stupid wasps aren't plotting their attacks on me. If I wait till grass is growing in April it will be too hot to go out ☹ Guess its lasagne gardening technique for me.

I want to kill some zoysia grass to plant some wild flowers in the back yard. I was told the grass is very hard to kill because it spreads so quickly. Even if I kill it with round-up the grass around it will still spread and choke out the flower seeds. Any suggestions ?
@Gardenfundamentals1

Roundup will kill it, but if you don't kill the plant next to bed it will come back. That will happen no matter how you get rid of it.

I want to remove my entire lawn of centipede grass and put in zoysia. If I use roundup, do I still need to pull up the centipede grass, or can I just directly put zoysia seed over top of the dead centipede?
@Gardenfundamentals1
@Gardenfundamentals1 2 года назад
Once the centipede is dead you do not need to remove it. Suggest applying the Roundup, wait 7 days, and spot spray any green areas that were missed the first time. Cut the centipede as short as possible before you start so you don't end up with a thick layer of organic matter. The seed needs to touch soil, not dead grass.

Do you not think that glyphosate would kill the beneficial biology in the top two inches of soil?
@Gardenfundamentals1
@Gardenfundamentals1 2 года назад
It is a chemical that specifically targets a biochemical pathway only found in plants. That is why it is so safe. That and the fact that it quickly sticks to soil and becomes deactivated. Not a problem for soil biology.
