I am just starting to knit in the round although I have been using circular needles for some time. I have learned a lot from various videos here on utube. Your instructions are by far one of the best I have seen. Very thorough & easy to follow. Thank you!
Crafty Patti, thank you so much for this fabulous tutorial. I am an intermediate knitter. I have knit socks on DPN's, but was inexplicably afraid of knitting a hat in the round. I appreciate how clear your written pattern is and how clear, calm and friendly your video is. It was like having a friend showing me how to do it. I finished my first hat knit in the round today. My hubby loves it and it fits him perfectly. My only issue was at the very end where I only had 16 stitches on my needles. I finally "got it," but not without some frogging and drama. Thank you again!
Crafty Patti, thank you so much for this amazing tutorial. Your instructions were easy to follow and made me feel comfortable.... this is my first time knitting in the round as well! Hat came out perfect! Bless you and be well ❤
Thank you so much for a hat pattern that actually works for size, directions and simplicity. It looks nice and is so warm. Even the decrease section, when turned inside out works out all the way to the top without a flaw. So one has a choice of which side to use. It has worked out everytime I've knit it. Time to check out some more of your videos 😊
Thank you - a perfect explanation of knitting in the round AND making a chunky ribbed hat. I wanted to learn how to do both and your video is really clear.
After watching the video several times in three days I have made my very first beanie. Thank you for making this video that’s easy for me to understand.
Oh, God bless you... This is EXACTLY what I needed. I am making a brioche knit scarf for a friend and she is asking for a matching hat, I will make her one. I was looking for a simple hat with a circular needle, and found a pattern elsewhere, but realized it also called for Double pointed needles to shape the top. Wasn't quite ready for that, and then voila, here you are! I just bought those exact same needles the other day, with the same size. I will be using 2 strands held together of worsted weight yarn though, I think this should work, right? Very good job on the tutorial, perfect for beginners at hat making, like me!
So glad you found me and you found a video that you needed. Double strands will make the hat more cozy but it might make it slighter larger. You might need to cast on a few less stitches.
That tutorial was amazing! I am very new to knitting in the round, but you made it look less daunting. Please let me know how many stitches I would use for a toddler's hat. Thank you.
I published a video on hats for the whole family. Here’s the link for you. HOW TO - KNIT HATS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY - Matching Mom & Baby, Dad & Child - Patterns included ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GVTeRA4Gq34.html
Thanks so much for sharing your design!!! Your instructions are very clear, and you have such a smooth voice, which makes the tutorial very enjoyable❤ I need to knit a hat for my 5-year-old grandson this week for Easter. I've knitted his little sister several turbans - embellishing them with crocheted flowers, and he feels left out😢 Could you please tell me more or less, how many stitches I'll need to cast on and how I'd go about the decrease rounds... I intend to use 2 colours - blue and yellow. Thanks again❤
Thank you so much for your easy hat pattern. I knitted 3 hats so far for my kids and they love it! Can you please send me an easy leg warmer pattern.I really want to make it my next project.
Patti, thank you so much for this tutorial! I'm a new knitter and your tutorial here is simple, easy to follow, and your instructions are clear and kind. I knit my first hat for my roommate and I keep making them. The plan is to make many of these for presents this coming holiday season! thank you so much!
I love this explanation of knitting in the round. It’s very well understood and I can follow the directions very easily.I just have trouble at the last few rounds,My yarn is stretched to the limit and I can’t switch to a smaller cable. What can I do please let me know.❤I’m knitting with a 16 inch tip to tip cable,is this to big?? Thank you very much.Love the tutorial.
Not to worry. Find the middle of your knitting and grab onto the wire or cable and pull it beyond the stitches on both sides so there is just cable sticking out with no stitches on it and the stitches are scooted up both sides of the needles. This will make it easier to finish your last stitches. As you work around the round you might have to pull the cord out a different spot for ease of knitting. I hope that made sense.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Thank you so much for explaining this,I was getting very frustrated. My next hat will be great.Love the instructions. I’m just learning how to knit the continental style and it’s not going very well. Thanks again.
Beautiful with awesome instructions! I am knitting with very thin yarn (doubled yarn) and cast on 88 stitches with straight needles. I realized after knitting 6 inches that I should cast on 86 or 90 but that is ok now. Please guide me how to do decreasing I mean where for me. Thanks
Yaaay i did it and in the round and it actually fit. So happy and excited. It actually came out decent. Hats are not my forte. So I’m stunned it came out so well. Thank you, Thank you. Thank You Yay! It took me four day’s though. But still proud. May never have to buy another hat again.
As I strolled through RU-vid looking for a crochet hat pattern video, I saw the picture of this hat. Without reading the title that tells me plainly this is a knit hat tutorial, I clicked on the video. I have wanted to learn to knit but have never had the time to really take it seriously and learn. After watching this video, I believe I could learn to knit. Your patient voice and the explanations you give is how I will learn. I thank you for sharing your creativity, talent and patience and this video. I am going to get the needles and some yarn and make this hat. It looks warm and very beautiful.
I have knitted in the round with double point needles. However I have always struggled with the decreases. Handling 4 double points was a challenge. This is the first hat in the round that is simple and finishes perfectlly. I will be knitting more hays now ❤
Thank you for helping me learn for the first time!! I keep accidentally dropping my second needle and having to completely start over bc I'm not sure how to pick it back up yet! Your video is so helpful. Usually I have to slow down tutorials but yours is at the perfect speed to learn with
Hi, I’ve just finished your hat, it’s beautiful despite the few obvious errors at the beginning. Is this possible to do the same hat with Wool Ease thick and quick super bulky 6 weight yarn? With the same circular needles and cast on stitches? Thank you 🙏🏻 😊
Yes, of course Here is a knitting chart for ribbed hats that might help you. Here’s the Link to the video with the chart. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GVTeRA4Gq34.html Knitting chart is in this video at time stamp 2:40
Good morning Patti. I can't tell you how much I have learned from your easy to understand tutorials. I also wanted to thank you for the easy access to your patterns it is very much appreciated. Take care and have a wonderful Christmas!
Thank you great video. Very relaxing don't feel nervous watching you your very relaxed I feel I can do this. Your a great teacher, love your marker, i have a lot of Bobbie pins in the house. Good to watch to see if I can find more of video. Looking forward to knitt with you again.
I know. The same for me. It looks really awkward doing the continental to me. Funny how we all get used to or own way of knitting. At least the pattern is easy to follow for any style of knitting.
Thank you for a great video ! One question; for a male with an extremely large head ( using more than 64 cast on stitches) what advice can you give me when closing the top? Do I use the same procedure as with a smaller head or do I need to make any modifications and if so what? B. H.
Would I be able to make a scarf with the same knitting stitches, pearl 2 knit 2 .Would that be looking good.I finished my hat and followed your instructions and it looks GRET.Also put on a Pom Pom like you have the instructions in one other video you had with the slippers , wish I could send you a picture.Thank you over and over again.
Just found your instructions for the hat. Very informative. Quick question. Instead of using a bobby pin when you began your decreasing, could I use a stitch marker at the beginning of the hat, at the first row to help me know when I am beginning a new row? I feel like that might be easier for me. Placing a stitch marker right after joining in the round or right before you start joining in the round. Does that work? Thanks.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts I just wondered why you didn’t place the stitch marker at the beginning of the hat,,, instead of way up toward the top. I’m just getting back in to knitting, so sorry for asking again. Thanks,,,
Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. One question: How many cast ons if a #6 Bulky yarn were used? Possibly 72? Thanks for your reply, it's very much appreciated.
A bulky #6 yarn is not always the same in all brands. So it is best to knit up a little sample gauge. I also made up a knitting chart in one of my hat videos and that will help you as well. When you are changing up needle sizes and yarn sizes from original pattern than it is best to knit a small sample gauge. Cast on about 20 stitches and knit about 8 rows. Look and see how many stitches you knit in your inch(2.5cm) Average size adult head is about 21-24”(53.3-61cm) Your finished hat should be about 14”(36cm) in circumference when it is flat on a table and about 24”(61cm) when stretched out. So if you have knit 6 stitches to your 1”(2.5cm) then you can figure out how many stitches to cast on to get the right size. As I mentioned above your finished hat should be about 14”(36cm). So 14”x 6 stitches= 84 stitches to cast on. Just make sure your final number is a multiple of 4. Add or minus a cast on stitch to make it work. Hope that makes sense. This is going to be my next project. I want to do 2 child's size hats. Will tyese hats be too big ? If so , can you tell me how many stitches I should cast on ? The children are 6 and 9. Thank you. Can't wait to start !

I would like to make a hat for my husband but he is a big guy. What needles and length do you recommend? I am new to knitting and you made this seem easy and doable.
I also published a video on knitting hats for the whole family. I also have a guide in the video to tell you about different yarns, needle sizes and how many stitches to cast on. You can make the hat larger by casting on additional 4 stitches or 8 stitches. Here’s the video. thank you for sharing this pattern I'am going to knit this can you tell me how many balls of wool i need for each hat I really find yours the most easies i have seen thank you again
I just started knitting in January 2024, and none of the youtube guide told me where to pull the yarn. There was a joke on trying to get the yarn out in the middle and looking very vulgar and I didn't get it until now XD. Thanks :)
Yes you can make this hat different sizes. I actually did another video on hats for the whole family. That should help you. Here’s the link: HOW TO - KNIT HATS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY - Matching Mom & Baby, Dad & Child - Patterns included ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GVTeRA4Gq34.html
Hi Patti l hope you are well. I need help with some yarn l have 2 balls of size 4 wool if l knit them together would it give me a bigger size wool? Thanks so much you are a wealth of information.
I think the size 4 will be smaller than the bulky 5 yarn that I used. But depending on where you live a size 4 yarn can have different weights. You should do up a little sample gauge than you will know how many stitches to cast on so you are happy with your final size. 14” circumference is an average size for ladies hat. It is best to knit a little sample to test your gauge. Cast on about 16 stitches and knit about 8 rows. Measure how many stitches you knit per inch. Example: Let’s say you knit 6 stitches per inch and you want your hat to be 14” in total circumference. Then just multiply 6x14 which equals 84. So you will cast on 84 stitches. Hope that helps.
So glad l have come across your video my friend asked if l could knit her a hat as well as a scarf wasn’t confident, going to be using james c brett chunky

14September/24 Absolutely perfect tutorial - thank you so much - best seen on RU-vid as so clear - no need to keep stopping to reread as instructions stay at top as you work! At last a VERY good instruction that even a child could follow 😊
Wow!! I'm just a beginner knitter (because I'm originally a crocheter) but your tutorial gives me confidence that I can do this kind of project. That's fantastic!! But I want to know, will that kind of cast on create a much cleaner edge?
Hope make this but my wool had so many knots in it, now have go buy another ball, would short tip interchangeable be ideal rather then standard length needle, looking at getting size 6, and get the wire separately , x
I love knitting in the round as I don’t have to sew up a seam later. Short tip interchangeable needles are great. Wish I has some. Size 6mm is perfect.
Great video and pattern you are so natural how you explain easy to follow one thing I like to know how much stitches to cast on for kids if you can help thanks gloria
Glad you like the video. I haven’t worked it out for a child’s size as yet. Have had another request for a newborn hat too. Cant guaranteed any more videos before Dec 25th but see how it goes.
That is absolutely beautiful and so easy to make. I am going to star one exactly the same this afternoon to make it for my daughter who lives so far fro me in Australia. Thank you dear consider me Regular visitor 🥰🤗👌
Winter time in Australia right now! Hard to believe when we are in a heat wave where I live in BC Canada! Enjoy knitting your hat for your daughter. Happy to have you join me on my channel.
Yes you can use thinner yarn but a few things to work out. Look on the yarn label to see what size needles are recommended. You will also have to work out how many stitches to cast on. You should knit a little sample to test your gauge. Cast on about 14 stitches and knit about 6 rows. count how many stitches you knit in 1 inch. You will want your hat to be about 14” all the way around. It will be larger when it stretches on your head. Example: If you knit 8 stitches per inch than times the 8 stitches by the 14” you need for your hat. So 14x8=112 stitches to cast on. You will have to modify the decrease rows for the top of the hat. Hope that makes sense. Enjoy knitting your hat Patti
Try this. Decrease Round 1: *K2 tog., P2* Repeat to end of round. Round 2 *K1, P2* repeat to end of round Repeat these two rows until you have 48 stitches then continue with the rest of my decrease instructions to finish the top of hat.
I ended up making a video on hats for the whole family. In this video I also make up a chart. I used two different weights of yarn for mom and baby and a heavier yarn for child and dad. Here’s the video and the chart is at time stamp 2:40 HOW TO - KNIT HATS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY - Matching Mom & Baby, Dad & Child - Patterns included ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GVTeRA4Gq34.html
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Wow! That is so helpful! I wanted to make hats for my sister, brother-in-law, and nephew, so that video is perfect! Thanks for making these videos!
Not sure what you mean by a single cast on. There are different methods of casting on. choose the one that works for you and cast on the same amount of stitches.
Hi Dee. I published a video awhile back for hats for the whole family. You will find one for baby and child’s size and for the toddler you can just cast on less stitches. Here’s the link to that video. HOW TO - KNIT HATS FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY - Matching Mom & Baby, Dad & Child - Patterns included ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GVTeRA4Gq34.html
Thank you so much Patti for this pattern, Patti! I made one with size 11 needles and bulky 6 yarn. I used 60 stitches and then followed the rest and it came out great, but a tad on the bigger side. Now I have yarn that's a 5, but still waiting for my size 10 needles. How should I adjust the number of stitches for the size 11, number 5 yarn? Should I use the 60 or 64 for adult?
If you want your hat to always fit than it is best to knit a little sample to test your gauge. Cast on about 16 stitches and knit about 8 rows. Measure how many stitches you knit per inch. Example: Let’s say you knit 6 stitches per inch and you want your hat to be 14” in total circumference when laying flat. Then just multiply 6x14 which equals 84. So you will cast on 84 stitches. If you knit 4 stitches per inch and you want your hat to be 14” in total circumference. 4x14=56. So 56 stitches to cast on.
Do you have a video on how to knit the toboggan that we used to wear back when we were kids. The ones that hang halfway down your back do you remember those
How many stitches would you do for a medium 4 weight for a woman's hat? Would that be 68 stitches or would you do more like 72 stitches? (matching to your +- 4 stitch chart)
A 4 weight is a lot smaller than the bulky yarn I used. I would try 112 stitches. BUT it is best to knit a little sample to test your gauge. Cast on about 16 stitches and knit about 8 rows. Measure how many stitches you knit per inch. Example: Let’s say you knit 8 stitches per inch and you want your hat to be 14” in total circumference. Then just multiply 8x14 which equals 112. So you will cast on 112 stitches.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Perfect, thank you so much!! I am working on hat number 10 now. I learned from your video and they all worked out great!! I am now playing around with different weights of yarn to try different styles and fits. Thank you for your help and for your great videos!
Great video! you are a super teacher! i'd like to do one like yours but with merino or cashmere wool. can i use the same method? I'm planning to after finished it make a sweater of the same material. Do you think is to complex for a complete beginner? Thanks a lot!
Have a look at this chart for amount of stitches to cast on. Here’s the Link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GVTeRA4Gq34.html. Knitted chart is at time stamp 2:40 You can use straight needles but then you will have to sew up the seam. Just make sure you are keeping the rib pattern of k2,p2.
To add to my previous comment. A visitor arrived from Europe. I knit up this hat in 2 afternoons. All I need do is add a pretty furry pom pom and I have a perfect Xmas gift for her. Easy to pack home again. Thanks again and wishing you a Merry Christmas as well. 🎄
Just keep pushing the stitches around the cord so they up on the left needle. Or you can also have half of the stitches close to one needle and the other half stitches close to the other needle and the middle of the cord will just be empty with no stitches.
