This kind of heel is what many people picture when they think of a Christmas stocking. If you use cotton yarn for the scrap yarn, it's easier to remove than if you use wool yarn.

This is my go to heel and it is really easy once you try it. I use circular needles because the double points just don’t work for me. Thank y’all so much for posting this video.

Love how your yarn knits up! Thanks for sharing, especially doing the heel demo as that has always been a mystery to me. Look at Jenny’s magic cast in to avoid having to sew the toe together on toe up socks. Really cool! Can’t wait for more in KnitStars3.0!

Have you ever tried casting off the heel stitches then casting on again, leaving a gaping hole while you finish the sock? Then go back and pick up the cast off and cast on stitches onto four needles and knit your heel. Heels always wear out first. This allows me to replace them neatly. The round before the cast off I change to next size needle up for easier pick up, or simply knit them looser.

Two things: 1) Would the k2tog be balanced better by ssk on the other side of the row? 2) Instead of the red row, could you use waxed line or a ravel cord to make pulling the line easier?
@amandagriz
@amandagriz 7 лет назад
I made this sock and it turned out great! But, taking out that thread was really REALLY difficult. I'm making my second sock, and I am going to do something a little different: I am going to place 2 "rescue lines" using wool thread on each row next to the heel marker. I am then going to remove the heel marker and pick up my stitches on the rescue thread. I hope that will be easier - I'll let you know how that goes!

As I'm typing this my question is sounding more and more unnecessary! :) But here it is anyway. Instead of using the marking yarn for the heel which I'm assuming is what makes it easy, can you just knit the heel? Love your videos and using 5 DPN it is my favorite way.

It would be nice if you could design a yarn that automatically places a contrasting yarn where the heel goes and you just keep knitting. You would have to have different sizes though I guess. Beautiful yarn by the way!

OK........I've watched again, and it looks as if once you picked up the stitches and removed the place-holding-marker and began knitting........Arne knitted in the BACK of the stitch? Then on succeeding rows he knit in the front of the stitch as you normally do? Can you clarify or explain?
@szumikovski
@szumikovski 5 лет назад
Ok, I am intrigued with Arne's picking technique and trying to learn it. My hands are still very clumsy but I'm confident I will get into the swing of things soon. Arne-I noticed in this video when you began the heel, after removing the marker line-you knitted from the back of the stitch, then switched to the front of the stitch on succeeding rows. Can you explain why you did it like this please?
@Hiiiiiiii__jlc
@Hiiiiiiii__jlc 10 месяцев назад
its because the stitches went on leaning the pearl way from picking up the stitches and then you just knit from the back to create the stitch leaning the knit way

Arne & Carlos, I truly enjoy your videos and review them again and again to solidify knowledge. I do have a question about the afterthought heel. Would it be possible to knit Arne's Scandinavian Heel? I realize it would not match the toe so would it be possible to knit the toe the same way? Essentially a variation still using Scandinavian styling.

My question with knitting toe up and the afterthought heel is -- how to measure how far to knit the foot before placing the marker yarn for the heel. Is there a chart somewhere that would give that information? I can't always try the sock on the recipient's foot. LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos!

@lynnthomas7275

when you pick up the stitches they will be the wrong way round. By knitting in the back of the stitches on the first round you are putting them the right way round. Then you continue to work as normal. Hope that makes sense

I am curious why you would not be concerned about slanting left and slanting right decreases to shape the toe? I always thought you had to to ask AND K2tog to get the proper slant? Would love any comments from anyone on this, I guess I could just try it with only K2tog and see how it shapes? I love you both, you have a wonderful presence that is so soothing and you make it easy to learn.

Hi, You don't mention it but it looks to me like you're picking up the left legs and then knitting through the back, I know it produces the same result but is there a reason you do it that way instead of just picking up the right leg and knitting through front? Other afterthought heel tutorials seem to instruct to pick up right leg. Just wondering if it makes a difference in your knitting or if it's easier that way or if it doesn't matter and you would do it either way. Thanks!

To perhaps save you a research journey - in a nutshell(ish) enter into the leading leg of the stitch where ever it may be unless intentionally needing to twist the stitch. So applies to K, P, Slip, throw, pick, English, Continental, Combination. Does this read as sense to anyone but me? I do what I mean to say but can't say what I do very well.
