Many cradle Catholics will never understand the mental gymnastics and spiritual struggle that one goes through in order to convert. A loving community is necessary that is charitable. I’m in RCIA and I cannot wait for the moment I am able to receive the Eucharist. That is what called me…Jesus. I prayed about it and things fell into place. I prayed the rosary daily even though at the time I was scared I was committing a sin. Mary guided me to the one holy apostolic church. God bless you in your journey.

Man, you ain't kidding. Mental gymnastics is exactly what this guy is doing. The only thing that kind of gets on my nerves is that it seems like he is only satisfied if something suits him....in other words, it has to pass "his" smell test. I know it's surface stuff, he seems sincere, but man it's tough to listen to.

@@jamesdavid7099 yeah I think he’s truly on the fence, but he needs to truly pray about it. Who knows he may become Orthodox and make his way to the Catholic faith, but I have faith in God to not lead him astray and I have comfort knowing they’re brothers and sisters in Christ and they have valid sacraments.

Felt that… Being removed from the (Protestant) community, at odds with family and friends, shunned, ostracized, criticized by people to whom you were once close… But we must love Him more with our discomfort and detachment and inconvenience. Conversion is a cross to bear my friend.

I was born Catholic, but in my young adult years I left it all behind. I was sure there had to be a better way. So, I wandered for years. I ended up digging into the New Age movement because I was doing yoga and had some very spiritual experiences. But, I could never completely surrender to the nothingness. So, I searched through the New Age stuff. Every thing I read always would talk about Jesus but more as a spiritual teacher or prophet, but not as God. Which I thought was weird. And, they always tried to reach out to spiritual guides, but it wasn't like they were searching for heaven. Then I got really sick (I look at it as God needed to do something drastic to get my attention), I had no idea how I was going to get better or even what was wrong with me. And, it came into my head that I needed to surrender it to Jesus and ask for His help. It was a horrible time I finally got a diagnosis and treatment, but it was really the beginning of my suffering. In the time I got some relief from my illness, I started attending a Lutheran church. Figured it was Catholic light. Like I was dipping my toes back into Christianity. I was still keeping my options open and reading New Age materials. I got a book on guy who had received all kinds of amazing and prophetic messages. One of the things he did was to read the Bible cover to cover every year of his life. So, I figured maybe I should do that too and I could get closer to God that way. I told my Lutheran pastor that I was doing it and he said most people never make it through. So, I was determined to do it. After that first reading, all I saw was the covenants and consuming Christ in the Eucharist was necessary to be in covenant. I also saw the entire mass fall out of the pages. Protestants always say so proudly how they are Bible believing churches, but what I discovered was that the Catholic church was the Bible Living church. That at every mass we step into the Bible and walk in the footsteps of Jesus. It wasn't long after that I left the Lutheran Church. It probably took another year to come home to the Catholic Church. It is everything I was searching for and more!

In discerning, we have to be careful of delusions of grandeur. God's plan for most people is to simply live well, plug away at your station in life, grow in union with him through good works (and yes, suffering), prayer, and the sacraments, affect others through that witness, and then die. If when you consider this as his likely plan for you and you think 'this can't be it, because it is too simple or imperfect or intellectually neat and tidy' it may be your pride getting in the way.

I have known so many people from all kinds of sects of Christian faith that treat other denominations as unsaved. According to some Catholics I've known, -anybody who is not a Catholic is not saved. According to some Protestants I've known, -anybody who is Catholic is not saved. I've talked with a couple of Apostolics who argued that if I don't speak in tongues, then I don't have the Holy Spirit (which to my understanding is the assurance of our salvation). As for me, I feel my spiritual gift is the ability to feel other people's spirit (to a degree). There are times I meet somebody, and I can sense the Holy Spirit inside them, and I instantly know they're Christians. I've known Catholics and Protestants of all sub-denominations like this. I've not known enough Jews or Orthodox to detect such a similar thing. That the Orthodox community says you have to renounce certain things, I think, is problematic. But I must say the same thing with Catholics and the dogmas. Of course, I've also known plenty of Protestants who paint with the same broad brush of condemning anybody who slightly differs. But this is why I think the catholic (lower case "c") church is so important. Catholicism can't be the way to heaven, because Chinese Christians wouldn't agree with all Catholic theology. Eastern Orthodox can't be the way to heaven, because many of us in the West don't know their theology. Baptists and Evangelicals can't be the way to heaven, because most of the world doesn't know their opinion. Jesus is the way to heaven. At the center of it all is Christ, -that's why we're called Christians; it's what C.S. Lewis called "Mere Christianity", or the famous saying, "In essentials: unity, in non-essentials: harmony." I love theological debate, and value pursuing what is objectively true, but at the end of the day, it doesn't matter if you're Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, or Messianic: you are a Christian.

I grew up Charismatic Protestant and I experienced some of the same things he is talking about when I was on the journey to become Catholic. As a charismatic, for years, I saw people talking about what God had shown them or told them etc, and most of the time they were either wrong, or the revelation they had eventually just kind of faded away as though it had never been (which I also classify under "they were wrong"). I saw people who were leaders of our church claim that God told them exactly opposite things about the direction the church should go etc. What I learned from all that was that you should not put your feelings in the place of God. Do not put absolute trust in what you feel. Most of all, distrust that which tells you what you want to hear. I know my reason is flawed and finite. Thus I know that I am extremely capable of being wrong. However, Intellect is what God gave us to seek and find truth. I also put my faith in the Bible, particularly passages like "knock and it shall be opened, seek and you shall find..." and "if any of you lack wisdom ask God who gives liberally and without reproach and it will be given to him". I take these verses to mean that it is an absolute guarantee that if you seek honestly for truth, and ask honestly for wisdom with humility and obedience in your heart, then God will lead you to the truth. I followed my reason, with the prayer that God would give me wisdom, and the pledge that I would always be open to correction. There were many points where I prayed something like "I think the Catholic Church is true, but I'm not sure about this particular point, so God if I'm wrong in following the Church into this belief/practice, then both forgive the transgression and deliver me from the error" More than once I prayed "If I am accepting this simply because I like it, and I'm biased, then please make it clear and show me the truth" I'm a big advocate for not trusting yourself too much. But there also does come a point where you have to realize that God gave you your mind for a reason, and you should let it do it's job, and simply trust that if you are making mistakes, but you are willing to submit to God's correction, that you move forward, until God makes it clear you need to move in a different direction. Rely less on oracles and more on God's gift of wisdom, and above all humility and love of truth.

When I knew my time as an Anglican was coming to an end, I knew my only options were Orthodoxy and Catholicism. I get your agonizing over discernment and weighing the attractions of both. I came into the Catholic Church (and indeed am a priest), but I still cast a loving eye towards Orthodoxy from time to time. But we're both apostolic churches; you're not going to go far wrong with either. But for Pete's sake, make a decision and commit yourself somewhere!

Showed me God's Word. Got saved. Depression gone. Ever since a believer in Jesus Christ. Praise God forevermore, and his Son. He is, literally, the only "Way, the Truth and the Life". Not Religion. Not any religion. And, I am a member of a Christian Church. Have been since then.

Thank you for your honesty. So many people can relate, I’m sure. I know I can. My mother is Anglican and my Father Catholic. After spending much of my teen years spiritually homeless, I came back to Christianity but didn’t know which church to be a part of. I love something in most denominations. But I was baptised Catholic so I made the choice to remain Catholic as I felt it was where God put me. I love my faith and would now consider myself a ‘gentle traditionalist’ but I still get so much from Charismatic and Orthodox spirituality. Whenever I have ever thought of leaving and going to another church I get this profound sense of homesickness. During difficult times, such as the Pachamama scandal and all the repression of the Tridentine Mass and I’ve wondered if I should be somewhere else, I’ve instinctively shut the door on all the arguments and gone back to ( the secret place), prayer, adoration and The Bible. The most stabilising thing for me has always been to return to the basics time and time again. When all the devotions and theology get too confusing I just go back to the simplicity of The Sermon on the Mount and the gospels and proverbs and the psalms. I go back to Jesus. The person of Jesus is the root of the root and our true home. Then I ask myself, what can best aid me to live these truths of Jesus? For me, personally, the sacraments and devotions of the Catholic faith help me do this so that is why I stay.

I feel like for most people, the most prudent choice is to approach God the way he has approached you. If you are baptised, start with the community you were baptised in, and spend most of your energy (and time, probably years) trying to grow in holiness, rather than trying to discern exactly which church you're supposed to do it at. After a few years there, you'll have much more information and experience, and can go from there. If you're not baptised, try whichever community appealed to you first, and do the same thing. You can get the basics almost anywhere, and if the truth does lie somewhere else, you'll likely be drawn there over time eventually anyway. Honestly, even if you remained in the 'wrong' place, if you spent your time there earnestly trying to love God and grow in holiness, that's really most of what mattered anyway. Nobody's ever been damned on a technicality.

My husband is catholic, for 10 years of our marriage I was not, he never pressured me he never thought oh no well I gotta be what she is because she won’t join. No he was on his journey, and the beauty of his dedication and my own lost feeling lead me to Catholicism. To me it sounds like an excuse. Nothing will be perfect and it takes years and years for us who converted to the faith to truly understand the beauty. But you must take the first leap. I hope he finds what he’s looking for.

You have to make a choice. While you dither, your children do not have a solution and direction. Your wife does not have a direction. You. You proceed searching but not providing the solution. You are not leading as a father must. Choose a path and go. Your family suffered liability until you take up your mantle. You seem like a good man, you will not choose something evil. The only evil will be abdicating your responsibility. Do your best and drive on. Be a man, trust in the Lord, choose a path, and be humble enough to hear his voice.

I get the struggle. Raised Catholic, and with poor catechesis and no one to answer my questions, I drifted away. Came back about a decade ago and have never felt quite settled. Catholicism is my patrimony, and I can't dismiss the authority given to Peter and the weight that holds in keeping me in the flock, even when all I want to do is run. I've tried Orthodoxy more times than I can count. The theology of the East appeals very strongly to me, but I can't leave. Most I can do is attend an Eastern Catholic church. It feels like sitting on the fence, but I'm at a loss for what else to do.

I have close friends who appear to be on a journey to discover what they believe. They dive in deep and practice very hard what they discover and believe at that time. Every few months they appear to lean towards something different more than before... more Evangelical, then it's more Jewish, then it's more Protestant... I really won't be surprised if in several years they come to the end conclusion that the Catholic Church is the final result of their journey. It won't be without much resistance, as nearly everyone outside the Church believes it is something that it is not. When people truly search, and explore history and why things are as they are (something as simple as the creation of the Bible), the revelation is that the truth is in the one Holy and Apostolic Catholic Church. And with that said, many converts make excellent Catholics as they have lived outside the Church and appreciate knowing what it means to worship and glorify God in the Church created by Christ himself.

I could be totally off base, but I'm hearing a problem that seems all too similar to what I'm experiencing with my girlfriend and potential wife someday. Our faith and worship expressions, due to our love for Christ, are not truly united and it is causing significant problems that can no longer be ignored. I'm an established (born again) Catholic and she just moved from being a seeker to being baptized outside the Catholic Church, which is fine and was a great blessing, the day after Christmas. We have attended Catholic Mass, Calvary Chapel, and Messianic Synagogue together, but the differences are contributing to our disunity and any real honest ability to raise children together (when the time comes) in unity and without confusion. The Eucharistic miracle itself is a non-negotiable for me that she recognizes and agrees with but does not fully understand or practice rightly. Anyway, sorry for talking so much about myself, but I couldn't help but think that this man's struggles are due in part or in full to the lack of alignment he has with his wife for living in a different community of faith. In Christ, Andrew

As someone trying to discern between Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy, this video was not helpful. I would Dislike it if RU-vid fixed its castrated Liking system. It was mostly a survey of relationship pressures -- the majority of the video is irrelevant to its stated title. In the final two minutes he reveals his preference for emotion, whereas this is a question of fact, and admits he lacks the time to arrive at a confidently-studied conclusion about the facts. Was this video automatically cut and uploaded by software Fradd relying upon to make decisions for him? Very poor decision to post this time-wasting video. Nothing helpful in this video except to generate sympathy in onlookers unaware of the situation, which seems of limited benefit. This video decreases the likelihood I will watch future snippets from Pints With Aquinas. To answer the titular question, something the video fails to do: My current 'best answer' is to pray for the Holy Spirit to guide and reveal and to spend at least 10 minutes daily studying the facts until one discovers "the truth" (and to join the larger diocese in your area until you find it) -- e.g. A) papal supremacy was widely held by pre-schism Christians; B) Vatican councils introduced heresies relative to the Church Fathers and pre-schism councils ...

I took this personally as I've been to many a protestant church and a handful of heretical sects as well as some various Catholic parishes. I studied Orthodoxy and, I fell in love with the liturgy but was heartbroken by the divide that is visibly present. And, now that I'm a Catholic goin on three years, I'm in a place where I see various different people saying various different things that are not only laity but ordained ministers that are pushing political views, rather than focusing on the Gospel, the sacrifice of the Mass, and I think personally that, though I'm understanding of the basics of the Catholic faith, and am comfortable with them, I think we all need to reroute ourselves to the basics and dedicate our lives to the sacraments and the faithful teachings of the Church. Focusing on Christ's sacrifice is what will bring us together. Embodying it is what will save us. Edit: I would like to add that, I'm not being ecumenical and that there is an absolute truth and stable doctrine that presides within the Catholic Church that, I personally cannot abandon, and that, this wasn't merely my own journey, but my fiancee's. She and I converted together, becoming Catholic together when everyone was against us. We made a decision as a couple that changed our lives forever and have stuck with it in the hardships and the moments of pure happiness and joy. I believe that the Catholic Church is Christ's Church.

As someone going through a discernment process over a serious matter myself, Derek's process for deciding one way or another was surprisingly relatable. I resonate with much of what has been said here. I was a Protestant senior pastor for 23 years. I vacillated between the catholic and orthodox churches. This lasted a little over two years, and was deadening to our souls. We are now Catholic and have found our home.

I am 28 and I have been an atheist for the last 15 years. I recently started believing in God again. It just happened, my mind changed completely in a week and all the arguments I used to have for being an atheist started sounding hollow and stupid. Now what do I do? What's the next step? My boyfriend (with whom I live and whom I intend to marry) is still a hard-core atheist and he doesn't want me to go to church. But even if I could manage to attend mass, what church should I choose? As a baby I was baptized in the Romanian Orthodox Church and my family is still outwardly Orthodox (they are not truly believers but they would expect me to perform Orthodox social formalities, like having an Orthodox wedding and baptizing my children Orthodox for the sake of tradition). It would be easier therefore to chose Orthodoxy. On the other hand, I am very attracted to Catholicism (maybe also because Catholic fasting rules aren't as strict as Orthodox one - I don't know if I can refrain from eating meat, dairy and eggs for 40 days of Lent). Also, there is the issue of politics or worldliness: the Catholic church seems to be more involved in politics, Corona restrictions and so on, while the Romanian Orthodox Church has fortunately until now refrained from such involvement. Is it wrong to consider the fasting rules and politics when choosing a church?

Derek, Suffering seems to present a problem for you as though being a Christian means to suffer. For me, knowing Christ is all joy and has made the suffering in my life have meaning. Example: I exercise to stay in shape. But initially, my muscles hurt as I use them to strengthen them. But this suffering I know leads to joy. And now I know that as I pray, I get to know God and He fills me with joy. Paul learned that on the road to Damascus. But it took him 3 years to fully understand Christ's message and calling, which he would never have understood if he had not spent his whole life up to that time learning the Old Testament. Jesus opened his eyes to what the Old Testament was saying, and Paul changed from arresting Christian Jews to proclaiming Jesus. He could not have done this without being completely filled with joy from the Holy Spirit. His whole life was a life or prayer. Isn't that what we are asked to do? Do it. I'm positive God will guide you and your family where He wants you. That is what the Trinity has done for me. We don't have to be intellectual giants, only prayerful ones. Examine the life of Bernedette of Lourdes and the three children of Fatima. They prayed.

You can't 'choose' to leave your church; that's such a profoundly individualistic and modern way of looking at the Faith. I mean not even Martin Luther 'chose' to leave his church, in fact he stayed where he was. Is not our placement in this world a Divine call to serve where we are?

For people criticizing Derek's waffling, perhaps you haven't gone through the experience of actually giving a fair shake to different Christian traditions. Why do you think it is that there are pious, intelligent, and faithful people willing to die for the faith in so many Christian traditions (including, gasp, Protestants). At some point, it's a leap of faith. It's ironic to me that some of the most well respected and revered Christian leaders are charitable towards other Christian traditions and ecumenical, but people on RU-vid comments are dogmatic hardliners with zero charity.

I can so completely identify with Derek’s wavering as I find myself in the same place. In reading people’s comments about more humility and trusting Christ, I know that they are correct. My fear is making a wrong decision which is probably rooted in pride. As one commenter mentioned, even if I were to make a bad decision, if it is done in all sincerity and I am open to correction, the Lord will correct me. Setting aside all of my Catholic Church objections, the thing that I most often see in faithful, seeking Catholics is a quiet faith mixed with a compassionate love for others which seems to yield an immovable strength. This is what I seek. It is what I see in the accounts of the lives of many saints, too. Your comment about “hardliners” I can also see in so many Protestants 😉. Thank you for your thoughtful comments

What is God’s holy will? In Exodus and Leviticus it is clear that God showed the chosen people how to worship Him. Clearly there was the priesthood, sacrifice and an alter. Then The last supper shows us the new covenant. Our new sacrifice is bread in wine. “This is my Body, This is my Blood”. God’s will is clear. The only time Jesus let his follows walk away is when they couldn’t accept that Jesus said unless you eat my body and drink my blood… The symbolism is the manna that came down from heaven to lead people to the chosen land. Now we have Jesus himself, feeding us with His body disguised as the bread. He is leading us to heaven the promised land. Belonging to a corrupt church with many evil leaders is not always pleasant but it is God’s Holy will. He even allowed a corrupt apostle in his circle within the chosen 12.

I was born into a Catholic family and went to a Catholic school as a youth (before Vatican II) We were taught that the Catholic Church is the true church and all other churches are false. After Vatican II, all that changed and the "old" church was driven away and we now have a new church and a new religion in which all religions are valid and so the Catholic Church became just another church among many. I don't feel that the modern church is the true church and adhered to the Traditional Latin Mass for as long as I could. Recently, the Traditional Mass has been taken away and I don't feel like I left the church...it left me. I contemplated for a little while about giving in to modernism and becoming a protestant by joining another church but then realized that I don't have to, because the modern catholic church as become Protestant itself. The Reformers have finally convinced the Catholic Church leadership that after just over 450 years, they were right and the Catholic Church is now abiding by their practices and many of their beliefs. Many priests and layman no longer believe in the true presence in the Hole Eucharist, and why should they. With all the casualness of receiving in the hand by layman and the priest not having to keep his fingers together after the consecration...etc. I'm drifting on my own now and will do the best I can but I know that I can no longer rely on the "Catholic Church" for proper direction.

You can always rely on the Holy Catholic Church bc it is infallible and indefectible, means she cannot err, teach error, contradict itself, administer false sacraments or give a bad liturgy and she will last till the end! Unfortunately since Vat.2 when the modernist took over FAITH(=makes us Cath.) changed, liturgy and all sacraments, saints, ... as you yourself have recognized - a new church/ new religion. As Catholics we must avoid this false church, hold on to the faith(old catechisms (pre V2) and L. Ott, Fundamentals of Catholic dogma will help) and find an independent Catholic parish with a valid priest > traditionalmass.org/issues & luxvera.org You may also watch my playlist "TRADITION", "MODERN ERRORS", "Lecture - About the Church", "Sacraments - new rites" & many more to find answers.
