Another Snakes & Scotch Livestream! We'll be talking about snakes, I'll be trying some scotch (or maybe bourbon?)
I've received some questions lately that had to do with people comparing their snake keeping to others and wondering if they are a terrible snake keeper. We're going to talk about this and MANY other things. It will be fun. Hope you can join me or at least catch the replay!

Out of all the big name breeders and youtubers i follow to get ideas and information from, i honestly will say i appreciate and enjoy you/ and your content most. your not like others you actually give advice to people and help others even if the person isn't apart of your patreon. i recently ran into an issue with my male yellowbelly and i tried contacting the person to get help and because im not on his patreon i couldn't get the help. took me about a week to figure it out and hes showing signs of improvements already. but just wanted to say that and say i appreciate you. ive always said you can tell the ones who are in it for the money compared to being in it for the right reasons.

@@GreenRoomPythons no problem and I mean that too. I appreciate that, he wasn't sick or anything he just suddenly became really shy and scared of me, but after about a week of covering his tank and what not I finally moved it and he's getting better slowly and at the same time I'm not trying to rush it. But I just wanted to share my opinion with you cause since long before I brought my first ball python home I was following a lot of these "big name" youtubers/breeders" I posted a picture and article on my Facebook about it. The person I purchased him from wouldn't even give me advice. Anyway thank you I enjoyed the live even though I missed it, I did watch the entire video. Thanks Bob for looking into my questions!! Speaking to the breeder who l will be picking up my second royal from soon, she actually moved some of her snakes back from bio set ups to regular enclosures as that worked better for both her and the animals. And a very interesting point about royals reacting scared to uvb, as well as possibly unsettling the snake by moving it to a different enclosure. Both things are on my mind now that the new terrarium is almost finished...so l might be able to add some observations of my own soon. 😉

Hi, Bob! I asked a question about switching my juvenile BP to rats from mice during the stream and I have an update! I feed frozen/thawed and I have a couple spare small mice, so I defrosted one alongside a rat and used it to scent the rat. My snake took it almost immediately! It was a bit of a step up in size for her and the first time I've seen her put forth more than a casual effort to eat for awhile. All went well and I'm so glad. Thank you for the advice!

This was really great, I enjoyed it. Regarding the bioactive question - do snakes act different - my experience is a whopping no. I think people forget or choose to not believe that most snakes are extremely secretive, and bioactive has nothing to do with whether a snake is active or hiding.

You take your snake to Catalina island? That's awesome! That's where my fascination begun, on a school field trip for a whole week we were on the island and someone brought a rather large snake species (couldn't tell you what kind, it was too long ago and obviously I didn't know snakes back then) but I suspect it was either a burm or a retic. Anyway I was so excited as a little boy when I saw that thing that even though we were supposed to wait our turn for our class, I ignored the teacher snd ran up to it and just couldn't stop petting it and feeling it, I fell in love from then on.

Hi Bob, I recently came upon your channel after getting my first ball python. I want to take a minute to say thank you for sharing all your knowledge. I’m still getting comfortable with handling him, and all your advice has been so helpful for my confidence as a new python owner. He took his first meal like a champ, and I don’t think I would’ve been as successful without seeing some of your videos. If you have a moment I have a question, I do want to handle my snake more, (obv not during shedding or after eating). But I feel intrusive taking his hide off to grab him? He is 10 months old, and handling has been okay so far but do you have any tips on conquering that fear of disturbing them? Thanks again for all your videos and sharing so much awesome info.
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons Год назад
I'm glad the videos have been helpful for you. Pulling them out of their hide is not a huge deal if it's done occasionally but you don't want to do it all the time. It's best to wait until they're out roaming which may be at night to handle them. That being said a couple times a week of pulling them out of the hide for a little bit of handling is not a big deal.

I use uvb for my snake and mine doesn’t have a heat element to it so he doesn’t really use it too often. he would much rather be in one of his hides but he does like climbing up to the top of his enclosure with the help of some plants I have stuck to the walls of the enclosure

I wouldn't offer anything but rodents to ball pythons as they tend to be very picky and you might accidentally get them off rats altogether. The reptilinks, quail and chicks I have in my freezer are for my black-headed python and my retics :-)

What do you do when you find you start getting overwhelmed and wanting to take a step back in collection size? Especially since for a long time new keepers were encouraged to start with 'beginner species" to prepare for a desired animal rather than just hopping into that animal. I have a couple 'beginner species' that i currently love and care for like any other snake in my collection but as I've grown with husbandry and confidence, my hunger for more obscure, advanced, and/or genetically complex animals grows. And it's not like i can't take care of the original animals i purchased, or that I'm dying to get rid of them. But to put it bluntly, more and more i am beginning to see the space they consume as lost real estate and a waste of resources rather than another animal i am loving and excited about. I'm finally confident enough in my abilities as a keeper that i can seriously consider a chondro in the future. This is the point in my hobby that I've been 'preparing for.' But i feel extremely guilty for even thinking about giving up some of my animals to free up space and resources for me to get more. Even if those other snakes are ones I've been wanting for years. That and, in said years i have also learned SO much more about the 'improving mental welfare' side of keeping. I have so many things i want to upgrade and update and buy for my snakes and fixtures i want to build, and it's all coming so fast, that the idea of stepping back and reducing my collection down to the animals i want to continue investing in sounds really attractive because then there's less to upgrade. I can buy enclosures to experiment with for future animals instead of having to put an animal immediately in it. I can work on developing skills with bioactive. I can bask in the glory that is less money i have to spend at RodentPro. And much more. And tbh, my taste has evolved away from some species that i currently keep. So there's that as well... Sorry MBK. I still have every animal that i have ever purchased for myself since the start of my passion over half a decade ago. If i were to get rid of some of those animals and most likely take a break from new animals for a couple of years, but then continue to get more later on, would that make me a bad keeper?
@Lovell93
@Lovell93 10 месяцев назад
Depends on how you look at it. Me personally as a keeper, I would never let go any of my animals, whether it's my cats or my snakes. If I adopt an animal, it's going to be with me for life. I don't really believe in adopting what you don't love and intend to keep forever. I'm not saying that makes you a bad person if you do that, I just wouldn't do it, personally! It's a tough choice only you can make, in the end. Good luck with your decision.❤

Hi bob! Great video! I wish I could have caught it live. I wanted to ask. Is it normal for a ball python to pretty much stay in his warm hide. The hides are identical and the ambient temp on my cool side fluctuates between 77 and 80. My snake only goes to his cool hide to shed or go to the bathroom lol. Also. Just wanted to say. I have a glass enclosure with aluminum tape on the screen and use a infrared red bulb for heat 24/7. He just shed for the first time with me and it was completely in one piece. Eye caps and tale piece and all so humidity is good. Is using a red bulb 24/7 ok? I have read mixed reviews on it. I live in Illinois and keep my house at 68 so a heat mat is out of the question because it would be too cold for my snake. The bulb does great but I’m just worried about the red light it emits. I don’t want it to scare or stress my snake
@Nicktendo93
@Nicktendo93 2 года назад
Or would a blue bulb be better? I turn on the room light during the day so he should be getting a regular day and night cycle other than that red bulb being on all the time
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 2 года назад
Many snakes will choose their warm hide over the cold, so no problem there. You don't want light at all at night because the snake needs a day/night cycle. The color doesn't matter (despite what pet stores may tell you). I'd order a CHE and replace the bulb with that. Congrats on the new snake!
@Nicktendo93
@Nicktendo93 2 года назад
I have one. But that thing gets way too hot. I have a b-link thermostat I think. I got it from Amazon but couldn’t figure out the best way to do it. Would think the probe going into the tank would get moved by the snake causing it to overheat because it’s reading the wrong temp. So what do I do with my CHE and thermostat? I have a 10 gal glass aquarium with a lamp holder on the side to move the lamp closer or further away. I believe my CHE is a 50 watt and it gets a little over 100 directly underneath so I never actually used it
@GreenRoomPythons
@GreenRoomPythons 2 года назад
@@Nicktendo93 I think I talk about probe placement in this video at some point, but you'll want to hot-glue the wire of the probe about half way up side of the glass on the CHE side and then set the thermostat to whatever it needs to be so that your temp gun measures 88-90 at the surface
