Thank you so much for the helpful tips. I recently quit my job to pursue UX design When you’re unemployed and struggling on where to start, it feels like you’re in the desert, so it really helps to hear from someone who has been there. Thank you the great resources and and encouragement Aliena😊
Omg I’m in the EXACT same boat right now. Quit my job where I was miserable just this week and now I’m pursuing Ux on my own. Idk if you’ll see this but if you want to be accountability buddies let me know 😂
Thanks I just got my BA in CS and now I'm doing the Google cert for UX. This was very encouraging. I'm also networking. I was always afraid of sounding so dumb to people but father said the more experience you have the more you're able to articulate what you want out of a job and also present yourself in a professional manner. He told me to take on many interviews as I can to gain experience. I'm glad that was your journey and it paid off :)
Hi Aliena, :) I'm from Vietnam and nice to e-meet you. Woah! so happy when I had exactly the same emotions, received rejections and created crazy applying strategies (my thought at that time) similar to yours. I'll consistently support your content!
Thank you for the encouragement! I was taking the google certificate but money got tight so I’ve taken time off, but i am using my gained knowledge and applying it to my website as well as making websites for my friends businesses so I can showcase them on a portfolio!
For newer designers or those who aspire to be, 04:55 is the most relevant information here. Certificates and Case Studies are cool, the reality is just that these are tools for us designers and people outside of the sphere don't really care for that at all. The only thing that matters is how does your work look like (portfolio) and whom have you worked with so far (resume).
I found your video very informative! Thanks for sharing all the details and being genuine about your experience. I am a newbie in UX design and I keep following your videos to keep updated
Thank you so much for this video. I got my UX certificate about two years ago and it’s been a little stressful getting a job since then. This video is very encouraging ☺️
I realised that for digital or design related jobs they require a minimum diploma in mass communication/ marketing/ digital marketing or graphic design (visual communication)
I respect your hard work and I don’t deny you your right to succeed professionally. But I have to point a few things out (I’m sorry): UX Designer is not a real job. What I mean by that is that it’s a job that only exists because of confusion around the software design process. The confusion arose because of software is not made according to real engineering practices. If it was, pple who have no software development experience would never be selected to design software. In truth, the UI of software is an engineering concern, and need to be handled by people who have the expertise needed to make the right decisions. Presentation of the UI and navigation between different screen is an engineering concern and needs to be handled by engineers. To be an engineer you dont necessarily need an engineering degree but you need to know how to build software. UX designers in truth, have no real skills besides the kind of skills you get from doing this Google course. Software is just another type of technological product, just like a car or a washing machine, now ask yourself would you really want someone who has no automobile background but only some online certificate to design the controls for a car? Then why would software be any different. And my point will be proven over time. The aberration that unskilled, unqualified workers such as UX designers are entrusted with making design decisions for software products will be rectified as it will become clearer and clearer that they are not needed. That in fact design decisions need to be a special branch of software engineering, like UI engineering, and that somebody who is responsible for designing UIs needs at least 10 years experience building software before claiming to be good at making UI. And that prophecy is already becoming true with more and more companies shunning UI/UX and all these Google certified UX Designers being left out of a job. So I don’t mean to rain on ure parade but I strongly advise you to retool, learn how to build software for real. Its not more hard than learning figma etc and then you will have real hard tangible skills to sell on the job market.
I wanted to get into UIUX for years, and ended up making one of those roles for myself after a career change. Came in to a job as an "Interactive" Designer which mainly meant emails and ads for a massive enterprise corp. After a few months of building trust with coworkers and leadership in my business unit, I created a new role for myself doing what I wanted to do in UIX. It took several months to get there (and I think that's the only way to do it-after a year of anything being a certain way in corporate America, it becomes extremely difficult to change), but now I'm happy in my role and making an impact.
You don't know how grateful I feel to have found your channel! I'm in the course right now and learning a lot. This will def be helpful when I finish the course and look to network to work on real life projects.
Thank you Aliena! I'm on the last course of the certificate, but had also started applying for jobs.. and I've been feeling anxious about the possibility of actually getting a job in UX. This is very helpful and encouraging.
How did you land your product designer internships and other designer roles before landing your job at google? What would you say is the most effective way to network and get referrals?
Wow. Thanks for the video. I started UX design course and just after watched your video. But saw you didn't got job so I got demotivated and left the course after completing 2 modules. Then I went for web developer role to gain experience. Currently I am MERN fullstack developer, and yes everything starts to fall in place if we keep pushing. I am happy for you and this video inspired me to keep on trying. 👏👏
this is a fantastic video and as a graphic design student right now- i appreciate your honesty and push for a growth mindset. thanks for sharing and pushing me to be more motivated! also- i recognize the foliage plant behind you hahaha i work at a floral section in my grocery store and we sell those exact ones.
So I'm a graphic designer wanting to go a the UX route, I've created a few websites (paid) for ppl as a freelancer, I graduate in December! 🥳 will working with clients not necessarily teams with engineers and PMs etc, will that be considered “real life projects”? Because that's all I have. I plan on starting the certificate at the end of the year!
Hey Aliena... I feel so depressed today cos I am a last year graduate in Communication design and completing my UX Design Certification and Also un employed from last 3 months. Although at the start of this year I have a job but due to raise in Inflation in our country they shut down their project. I was so down today and Magically I saw your video in youtube and it makes me feel better now... Thank you Aliena for the video.. 🙂🙂
Thank you for this vid. I am in a similar situation right now. I have a 3d modeling background, and I am gonna start the google certificate course soon. For the longest time I felt as if there was something wrong with me when companies would ghost me or I would get rejection letters. It made me think I was not good enough. I am thankful for this advice as it let me breath a little bit.
Thank you for sharing so much priceless information in your videos. I love how comfortable you are in front of the camera. It feels like I’m listening to a friend, very comfortable. Keep it up!
Hi Aliena, Came across ur channel two days ago, it popped up on my youtube feed and after watching how u got ur first UX design job vid, it didn't take me long to hit that subscribed button. Great and such insightful content/information you are giving out. I was never a design/tech major but I'm on track to learn figma/design from 0, thinking about taking the google course as well. I will most certainly focus on building my portfolio/resume along the way. Thank you again for the motivative content, keep them coming!
Thanks for this video. Very inspirational. For those wanting a UX job, I highly recommend the book Get Into UX: A Foolproof Guide to Getting Your First User Experience Job by Vy Alechnavicius. It made me rethink how will I approach transiting into UX Design.
Hello Aliena! Thanks for the awesome video! I’m really interested in making a career change to UIUX, if you’re on non-immigration VISA like OPT, H1B, it doesn’t allow us to be unemployed for certain amount of days, I wonder if you have to deal with this issue? Thanks!
Gosh yes, apparently OPT is not very strict. You can work for your school, an early startup, or an organization, or even volunteer to get that problem solved. So the job doesn't need to be a hardcore 8h/day thing. Ask your school first if you can log that you are working for the school to the system but don't do a significant work to help to transfer to your career.
your words were magic, as a currently unemployed aspiring graphic designer, I found so much motivation in what you said. Thank you and wish you the best!
Hi Ailena, Glad that you shared this video. I would like to hear your thoughts: I am strongly considering creating my case studies that revolve around travel and geography. When it comes to real-life projects, could it possibly be a travel destination website? For instance, a particular city/region that can be on someone's bucket list for their next destination.
It has been 1 year, you know. However, i like your true word, I didn't even read any JD i just apply as much as possible. Same hear too. That's why I really don't like the quistion "What makes you interest to work with us?". However thank you.
I think a major disclaimer here should be that you actually had a real UX job to put on your resume!! I am a graphic designer in the wayfinding industry and have completed my Google UX certificate and have my masters in visual communication design and still, after all of that...I have zero responses from employers. I would highly recommend to people who think landing a job in UX is quick and easy. Employers will not consider you unless you have the work experience first. Its super frustrating.
Thank you for detailing your experience. Applying for any job can be a soul-sucking experience -- while I'm not necessarily glad that you had to go through that, at least your experience ended well. Good luck to the rest of us in our respective attempts at aiming for a better job :D Subscribing!
I'm at the getting none to little response to my applications stage. I already had some experience wit UX/UI but I'm starting to think my resume is the problem. I also have a friend with a jacked up real estate website that needs help that I'm turning into a another case study for my portfolio.
Are those interviews online? I am working with lots of clients on fiverr and outside marketplaces. I have real life examples as well and repeated customers, I haven't applied to the big companies yet and I live in southern part of Asia. Am I compatible to apply from the location and are the jobs you applied remote or desk?
Thanks for encouragement I am from CSE background and started UI/UX and its fun cause I am learning something Everyday and those smoothly animation and transition makes my day
Thank you Aliena for letting me know on your process. I just started the google ux course and so far it seems interesting. I am taking it just to try new things, learning new skills and also maybe being able to apply it to my current job. I know it won't be a magic right away kind of thing but small steps over time.
Hai Alienacai ,I completed my coursera UI/UX designer course 6 months back . I'm still searching for the job no one is giving opportunities for freshers without live projects as you said. Can you please guide me in detail .
Thank you very much, last year in December I was very depressed, felt like I was never going to get out of a hole. Now 1-year later this feeling was coming back and I didn't know how to get out again, listen to you telling your history and giving me tips was very helpful, I will not get in the hole again I will not give up thank you
