Tango does a solo practice flight to brush up landings, slow flight, stalls and steep turns in the Pietenpol (is it REALLY a Pietenpol? Watch to find out!). This is a "deep dive" ride along for all of you avgeeks who love engine noise!

I fly a pietenpol. I’m not part of the piet building community. I’ve had some interactions with piet guys at Oshkosh. I’m not a builder. I just want to fly and the piet satisfies the itch without breaking the bank. The building community are salt of the earth types. They take themselves pretty serious.

I can't like this one hard enough! Great work. I am defiantly in the "nerdy-airplane" file. I am in the middle of a Piet restoration and I have no Pietenpol time. Any insights on the flying stuff is motivating and interesting. I would love to see a "cockpit view" during patterns if there is room for a camera. As always nice work with the edits and the music. I look forward to more Piet (Grega) content. Sorry to hear about your trip.
@TangoandJuliet
@TangoandJuliet 3 года назад
Nice! Glad it provides motivation to get that project finished...flying something you have worked on for so long is an immense reward. We will work on a “cockpit view”; may be possible to rig a GoPro under the wing facing forward.

I really enjoyed this one. Thanks for posting it. I am considering building a Pietenpol. I have a lot of things in my universe pointing me in this direction, least of which is a local guy that says he will give me the tail feather kit to build if I chose to go this direction. (He is also in the middle of building his.) A building buddy is also a HUGE plus. Anyway, I enjoyed this one and the one where you met up with your parents and gave that girl a ride. Keep them coming!

A rose by any other name or so the saying goes. Is it really as much fun to fly as they appear to be? Have lunch and watch airplanes? If you can't fly that sounds like a pleasant pass time. Always making sure youhave somewhere to put her down in the event of an engine failure just like any good pilot should. Nice to see you keeping the skills sharp.For the age of the design I'm amazed at how little into turn rudder is needed in those steep turns. That's not even a proper stall break is it? It just travels downhill in a nose high attitude.

Great video! Love the info although I’m not a pilot so some of it was over my head. As far as the forward visibility while taxiing; I read where a pietenpol builder put a backup camera from a car in the cowling with good success. What are your thoughts on that?

Sometimes the camera exaggerates it; the fabric will “plump up” a bit during flight! This is normal on a lot of ragging airplanes.

Hi how many hours for this build? Is it similar to a Fisher Flying Product Airplane construction ?
@TangoandJuliet
@TangoandJuliet 3 года назад
We bought this one as a mostly completed project so we can’t speak to the build time from scratch. It is definitely a “slow build” for most as you fabricate everything from raw materials. But that also makes it a really rewarding (and affordable) project!

He seems like a safe pilot wonder what happend. I know density Altitude is suspected by others how could that have been overlooked. Wonder if they would have been safer in the Pietenpol then the 140.
@logicturtle9838
@logicturtle9838 Год назад
Agreed. My speculation: There is a history with this pilot (according to youtube) of late afternoon cross country flights where the arrival time is in twilight. Based on the details of the preliminary report I suspect the arrival time was too long after sunset, and in the unpopulated area perhaps the pilot lost the horizon and became spatially disoriented during the base to final, perhaps some wind shear or gusty conditions could have contributed.
