You are a wonderful teacher. Several times you mentioned, "This may be obvious," but NOTHING IS OBVIOUS TO A BEGINNER. So many teachers skip things that they do by instinct at this point, but you lay (pun intended) it out. Great work.

Very true, been an apprentice for almost 3 years and the only thing that has saved me is the desire to learn. Just as you said there are so many things that have become almost second nature to bricklayers that they automatically assume is common knowledge it’s unreal. And when new guys come into the trade and get yelled at for not knowing things they end up quitting. Here in Canada. The trade has a ton of work but it is in some ways dying because not many new people are coming in

I remember teaching a young fella years ago, how to spread mortar. Pick up a brick. Lay it. Keep it true and clean, we finished the days work, then I told him, "Now for the finer points of bricklaying, lad!" As I held the Bar door open for him at the pub! Also Engineers will specify frogs up for load bearing work, so it good practice to always do it! If you use damp proof membrane on a footing, make sure the footing is smooth, not rough. Thermal movement will put more holes in it than Swiss cheese over time! Good tutorial lad, and as he says it's all about what your comfortable doing. If your a young guy labouring on a gang of brickies. Watch what they do, it's good grounding for when the time comes and you get a trowel in your hand.

RE FROG: When you mold a brick, part of the mold is called the kicker. The kickers in the mold help push the clay into position, it takes out air and makes the brick solid. The Dutch word for frog is "kikker". So you have an English person teaching a Dutch person (kicker), who then translates that to frog ad teaches an English person ..... Frog sticks,.
@acorncottage-gansclettfarm3335
Frog - It's also the middle of a horses hoof (ironically also sometimes used for kicking haha)

Good informative video, Rodian. Easy to follow for the would-be apprentices watching your channel.👍I remember my first couple of days on site as an apprentice in 1984 my journeyman just gave me a spot board full of mortar and had me loading the trowel and spreading a bed on the board over and over again for both shifts! I was thinking WTF have I let myself in for, but it was the perfect introduction to the trade, make the trowel an extention to your arm and it makes the rest of the job so much easier.

I just wanted to thank you for your posts! I spent a few hours last night going through how to mix mortar and how to true up lines and today I went out and rebuilt my chimney. Now, no one is going to recruit me for a brick layer's union, but the job is completed and I won't have to be ashamed to walk into my house. I also got compliments from my neighbor who is a retired contractor! Apparently I at least looked like I knew what I was doing! Thank you for making it doable.

Its so difficult to explain like this, i can sense the struggling but it was explained brilliantly. When you have done something for so long, it just happens and when trying to explain it, its so hard right to explain how you do what you do, you just do it. As with many trades it is not the obvious, it is the tiniest little things that matter and those were all thought about here. Awesome and exactly what I needed for some younger people and in a way now, myself as a recap.

This is great thanks! I have actually stood and watched a bricklayer building for me at my home and doing the 'PERPS' wrong, as you have pointed out last year and when I questioned it, he just shook his head and 'effed me off' ! I knew at the time it couldn't be right, but I trusted him as he is a friend. I am a plumbing and heating engineer, and my limit is some steps and walls in the garden and bricking up old balance flues when installing new boilers, but I always take my time to make a good job. Obviously this is your craft and you make it look easy, as I do with mine. I really appreciate the care that you put into the work, as there is obviously a degree of science involved as well as a lot of skill. Many thanks

Thanks so much for putting these videos out mate. They're exactly what I envision every trade training video should be; amazing video quality, showing all the techniques in every intricate detail, with full explanation behind everything. Thank you for not being selfish, and for sharing all your years of experience and skill with us in a format that evidently strives to teach people something and not show off. So many videos are labelled "How To", "Tips", and "Guide", but are nothing more than tradie-masturbation videos which start with some esoteric, self-congratulatory industry lingo with no clarification, which then cuts to some time lapse footage of the job sped up so it's impossible to glean any understanding from it, and then ends with a perfectly formed finished work that looks professional, and showboats the creator's skill, but offers nothing to the viewer.

Hello bud, just wanted to say thanks. I’ve just finished building a 3.5m by 1.0m retaining wall to raise our patio. Followed your instructions/ tips and had a crack. Bricks didn’t go down very quickly, but I took my time checking as I went. Confident to have a go at any garden stuff, but think I leave the house building to you professionals. Thanks again bud.

I love this video, it's extremely informative especially because my teachers don't criticize technique. Although it isn't my first brick laying, of my group I'm the foreman so I feel like I should have a decent pace and know what I'm doing. Usually I just smack the mortyr onto the floor or brick, do the laying and buttering, then level and par, if there's a corner check it's 90. But hopefully this will help raise my confidence and skill, also we don't usually measure the 75 you were saying. Another thing I often forget is the rolling, I'm aware that I'm not going to be amazing as I'm still in year ten but it's still good to know what you're doing. Thank you! :)

Fantastic tips, I had not thought of much of this like getting plumb and in-line with the course two down. I might have a go at this for my raised beds in the garden. Many thanks.

Awesome presentation!! You take nothing for granted, showing all the little nuances of laying brick. Great job! I am confident I can do the job I have planned; just building a planter box, nothing structural but I feel equipped and am excited to get started.

Fair play pal. Things I can't do annoy me massively and you've inspired me to have a go at the activity right at the top of the list. Thank you so much for this informative and usable guide. It's just a matter of knowing how to pick up the trowel and get stuck in and whilst I'm not quick its looking pretty good. Massive pat on the back to you feller!

Excellent instructional video! Very well done and informative! Subscribed! Planning to do a brick staircase off the side of my brick patio. I've done some minimal bricklaying in the past on some home projects, but your video has shown me what I was doing wrong and how I can improve on my technique! Thanks so much for this! I'll be returning for sure!
