Fair play Charlie, taking your time to teach the younger generation . Those few hours you spent with them will sink in for a few and hopefully they’ll take up a trade rather than going to uni and wasting years and money . 👍
Was doing this in college, didn't like it, joined a cookery course in Glasgow, 4 years later HND in professional cookery👌 didn't cost me a dime and got a cracker job out of it
@@Kazi2812 I did go to University. About fifteen years ago now. I work in the technology industry, and run a business. I earn sig figures. I love trade channels, because I enjoy seeing how other people work in their crafts. But I find dismissing University, in favour of trades astounding.
I am from South Africa and currently in bricklaying apprenticeship program . I really enjoyed this because it taught me few skills and to be patient with the tools. Thanks Charlie. Do more of this content.
Well done Charlie , we need more of this in schools ! So many kids would benefit from learning a trade instead of been stuck in education until there 18 coming out and still not knowing what they want to do. It's not all about money but let's be honest how many kids are going to go on and earn anywhere near that in an office job .
100%. Education has become so profit-focused that they will make useless degree courses and allow kids who don't meet the requirements still enter to get that student loan payout.
I disagree as someone who has done a trade dont do it lots of jobs will pay very very well for a degree its just that the student has to make the right decision and not doing something stupid like an art degree or something
Bloody brilliant Charlie !!! If you ever want to start a new career, education is the one for you, mate. My 13.yr old lad just watched this and was hanging on every word you said
You were brilliant with the kids Charlie, the more tradesman that give a small amount of time up to guide kids to chose their path in life is brilliant. I'm a mechanical engineer myself and watched your channel for a few years now learning so much to the extent of attempting to build my own summer house which I'm very proud of. Well done again mate, keep up the good work and have a brilliant weekend 👍
Charlie I take my hat off to you. Very honest and solid advice. I myself am a bricklayer in Scotland although with us it tends to be all block work or stone. 100% agree with all your comments in that video. Well done and keep up the good work. By the way fitz brick clamp are bang on.
As a young bricklayer myself I am thoroughly enjoying watching this video and have the highest of respect to you as you are teaching the younger generation
Great to see you encouraging new blood...I see myself 30 years ago in you and remember to great times and money I made. I'm 58 and been out of the bricklaying game for 30 years but nice to see your story. I remember building 3 bed houses DPC to Wall plate including 3" blocks upstairs rooms for £2500...my 2+1 gang did one in 9 working days including a single detached garage. I moved into commercial gas and now I teach which I love...Keep up the great work my friend.
I have been watching your channel for a few yrs but never commented...but honestly the work and time you put into those school kids will really resonate with some. We need so much more of this kind of schooling. By the way im a farmer from Mid Wales, and our Ag industry is really struggling with new entrants etc. Keep up the good work.
Those guys ( and girls) really learnt something today . Everyones got a skill , it's just finding what's right for the individual . Well done for giving them some really good advice..👍
You did well you're a natural at it, as far as the kids are concerned when your at that age you are 80% all nerves in situations like that. Its very difficult to not to let the nerves affect you by being put on the spot with other people around you at that age so they did excellent as well.
Always terrifying when it comes to teaching others what is essentially second nature to a group. You nailed it my man, you dropped the formal chat and instead spoke like you were on site to them. They will definitely be spoken to like that in apprenticeships. But they get to show off a pick n dip to the old boys . Total Respect Charlie
What a nice gesture of you Charlie,I bet the lads really enjoyed their lesson, you make a brilliant teacher. Great work mate, I can’t lay bricks to save my life but I’m sure I would have learned with a teacher like yourself.
Giving it back Charlie. That there is what life is really about . Like having 1000 kids but one kid becomes an adult and then becomes a man/woman who then earns a living . Who then looks back and says I owe what I've got to my family and Charlie collison is an amazing feeling. Fair play to you mate. Big respect.
I also wrote that comment without seeing the full video. I'm a landscaper and fully appreciate the mental struggles of working self employed, weather dependant it's a tough ride. Fact is you've put yourself in this position in front of these kids, not changed nothing about yourself but these kids will learn so much. Nothing but respect mush.
Takes me back to my school days in the early 80s. We all had a go at plumbing, carpentry, electrics, brickwork even lead flashing. I took up electrics and was very fortunate to retire on a good pension at 55 (I’m now 57) Hopefully some of these kids will choose the trade path. Good on you Charlie.
Top man and woman giving your time up for these kids. One part you say about if your no good at bricklaying it will get picked up straight away and you wont get paid this doesn’t apply to stonework on these sites the amount of rough and unacceptable work just gets passed off.
wicked stuff mate. out of school 10 years myself and did vocational learning around the same ages as these kids and my peers did construction, bricklaying etc. i did engineering but having tradesmen coming in is a game changer for these lads. im sure the teachers are great but something about someone from the real world coming in and giving you a few hours showing you trade secrets or skills you learn on the job is inspiring af. very wholesome bro love it
Another great video! It’s great that you took the time out to go and see these youngsters.. it’s something that bodes well in helping the trade stay alive. Without sucking your balls, if only these kids knew who they was talking to and how established you are in this industry. Big up Charlie
Great job Charlie, brings back memories when I learned , sometimes the simplest actions are hardest to master, like picking up and laying the mortar but once learnt never forgotten , its so nice that you are giving back by showing the youngsters , well done mate!
You are a real crack. The best explanations I've ever seen and I've seen a lot. You're an asset for the profession. As a teacher, I must just say thank you. Excellent job. Cheers from Coin, south of Spain.
Well done Charlie, needs to be more trades going into schools,so we can get our trade base up and running again to give our youngsters something to work towards and have goal to for its hard at the beginning of an apprentice,I was a painter and decorater for years started my apprenticeship in 1982
Big props for making the sole purpose of this class on bricklaying and only mentioning the youtube channel as something you do on the side. If you had revealed how big your channel was to them, you can imagine the only thing on their mind would have been youtube orientated and not about bricklaying. I'm not a bricky but I did a year back when I was in college and enjoyed it to be fair. I just had other dreams I wanted to follow but I am really glad that I learnt a trade. This gave me some great memories watching this video!
Well done Charlie, great for kids to see someone like you sharing such a dying trade, Lets hope these kids take up your lead. This also teaches these so much more than just lying bricks...
Good man Charlie, great to see U giving your honest opinion on the trade Pros and Cons, to the Next Generation, your public speaking was spot on, Your can do Attitude/ Hard work ethic will pay down the road
Well done that man. keep the tradition going. It may of not been for every student there, but it only takes a few of them to again pass on the knowledge and skills.
This is what school should be encouraging. I did a talk at a school about the opportunities in the motor trade, from being a mechanic through body work , electronics, motorsport sales etc. At the end the teacher said, "well that just shows if you are not good enough to go to Uni there are well paid jobs out there. I managed not to explode until the kids had gone out and then told the teacher what I thought of her attitude to those who use their hands and how using them is not a failure. When I told her my salary package she had no idea what the real world earning of trades. You taking it easy can make 750 a day on a good day yet she would look down her nose at you. We need more trades and less uni educated media studies and the like who end up 60K in debt and no job at the end of it. Your delivery was spot on for the kids
That brought me back to them awkward first days 😖. Well-done for from teaching in person i learn from just watching your videos u have made my job that bit easier
Interesting at 33:00 about their routes into work. Back in the day (early 80s) it was more simple, councils still had DLOs, and put apprentices through 3 years of block release. I did my C&G at Stockwell College of Building & FE at Vauxhall, London.
Ain't Child labour illegal Charlie? 😂 Inspirational people like yourself are so important to show kids there's other ways than getting 30 grand in debt studying how to make computer games but end up stacking shelfs. Country needs more of this, nice one 👍
I really respect how your being straight up and honest with the lads and telling them how it is year round and your personal experiences/feelings because I find it is always a lot to take in a first when your new to a trade and it can be mind blowing all the good & shit parts of it & the money. I started working for my brothers heating specialist company around 4 years ago at around age 17 and at first I couldn’t believe how shit money I was on and also how long the days could be. All the different weather and being in shitty uncomfortable situations like being up in a loft or under a park home in 40 degree heat sweating like anything 😂 but after a few years you start to pick up a good range of skills and it makes it a lot more interesting and you start getting more respect for your work and learn that a lot of the thing happening is just the job and realistically you just gotta get on with it or not do it ultimately.
fantastic and well done -- two days learn to read a plan a level and square a job then two years on the job to toughen up and perfect your trowel skills - good work . I've been in it for thirty years and still have stuff to learn
Well done mate this is exactly the type of thing they should be doing in schools bringing in tradesmen into the classroom and giving a first-hand experience of what the job is like and what the money potential is.
Very good for young lads and girls to give it a try they maybe a natural at it 👍up to them all and I do hope some of them take it up .well done Charlie and Amy a good day out👍👍👍
Well done Charlie. I can remember being a teenager and feeling like life had its foot on my head. The fact that anyone can get a pile of bricks ( some sand + a bag of hydrated lime) practice laying to a line. The fact that Nothing can stop you progressing I think is empowering for young men. I’d recommend 6 months at a skill center learning to lay bricks to anyone 👍
Brilliant video. Too many kids leave school without seeing possible careers that engage them. I wish more masters of their trade would do this, showing kids how academic stuff can help in the real world. Great point about getting more girls into the trades too.
i was the same when i first started, worried that you will do a bad job but at the end of the day it can be taken down and rebuilt your learning so just take your time and get the technique down then you can go from there! once your comfortable with the tools you will feel that it flows much smother and in turn enables you to lay better bricks 👍
That's brilliant. Must take allot of patience to teach young builders like this, it must be very intimidating for the youngsters to see you do it with such ease. Also it's good for them to have a laugh doing it. In my opinion this what you where doing is the best way to teach. 😊
Not gonna lie, this would actually have been really cool as a kid in school. Closest thing to a useful subject we did was afterschool motorcycle repair and maintenance. Seeing a bricky or a plumber or sparky come in and show practically how things are done would have been amazing. Love this.
Great job!! It’s a shame it’s a dying trade!! I love it I’ve got the muck in my veins glad I chose it after the Army let’s pray the youngsters keep it going
Well done on sharing your skills and experience. It seems to be an issue today that no one is willing to give back, so congratulations. P.S. Natural teacher ❤.
Bricklaying looks so enjoyable I’m only 15 and dropped out of school but it’s so interesting I’d love doing this for work from what I’ve seen in this video but it probably isn’t as simple as what I’m seeing
The thing that put me off with learning bricklaying in college was all the health and safety shite you had to do for rhe first month. Pure paperwork and 80% of the class had walked after the first 7-10 days. Hopefully its better nowadays...
I'd love to teach Bricklaying because at 60 years old I've kind of had enough. But my Bro is a teacher in a college and he's showed me the hoops you have to jump through and the courses you need and forms you have to complete and it's horrendous. There's so many kids out there that would benefit from old timers who have the skills, knowledge and experience needed to show kids whether a particular job is for them or not. Something should be done. Well done anyway Chaz.
don't worry about all those hoops you have to jump - if you want to teach then teach! quality instructors are in great demand, the colleges will sort the paperwork for you.
This is brilliant. Good on you mate had the chance myself back in school to do the multi trade course once a week and although I never went down any of them paths it put me in good stead for the trade I’m in now, but can definitely say having someone come in like this would have been much more motivational for me at the time for many reasons, keep up the work geez
Fantastic mate 👍 Giving them the best techniques and tricks, priceless. It's funny how you show them, but when they come to lay it's like they've forgotten everything you've just said 🙄😂
I've been a plumber for 30 years... even I learned a little something from this video!😂 If you can have the time to really develop a class structure you would be onto something starting your own school. You had some shy students at first but they got into it more when you relaxed more and they clearly enjoyed it. Top class class chap. Keep it up youre a natural with apprentices! (Take mine he needs a good teacher😂😂)
I loved construction at school best lessons we had at school we used to build big bbqs and build corners of houses up to dpc we used to put them vents in as well just lime mixed with sand and water as the mix cups of coffee and tea mr webster was the teacher proper legend he was in his 60s when i was at school an he used to dress up as santa for the local schools and charity football matches ect
I'm the same age as you 34, I remember back in school when I was in like year 10, I hated school there were a few of us like this and we got asked to go trial a college program for 2 years. It involved most of the trades Chippy/Bricky/Plumber etc etc, I think I did it for 4 years and enjoyed Bricklaying the most. I didn't ever become a Bricky though, whilst I was at college I learned to play poker to a semi good level and played online for a good 10 years. For the past 5 or so years now I've moved onto sports betting. Fair play for doing this you did really well. When you spoke about the health side of things it reminds me of a time where I helped a mate of mine out his was a chippy, He worked with a older guy probs high 60's in age. We were working on a roof and I couldn't believe how agile the older guy was. He was hopping around on the roof like he was 16 years old. If you look after yourself your you will benefit from that hugely.
Well done Charlie for giving those kids the opportunity. I wish I had that insight in the 90's as I would've probably chosen to opt for a trade as opposed to bloody IT! Even at 40 I'm still considering retraining into electrics. 🙃 You did well to keep that clean..... deserve rep just for that. 😂😂
Great effort to get the word out to these kids that they don't need to waste their time and money in uni studying a degree they most likely won't need or use.
Need more decent guys like yourself to teach young ones a trade as u are giving back what you learned when u were younger . Respect to u and fair play love ur videos and think ur a class act .
