How To Leather Wrap a Hiking Stick and add a Shou Sugi Ban Finish

I have an unhealthy addiction to walking sticks. Whether I'm hiking or just walking around the neighborhood, I really enjoy a custom walking stick..... I found a unique sapling that was cut down to make way for some construction not far from my home. The width was perfect for a hiking stick, and the curves, I knew, would make for an interesting look. I thought about carving, or some cool inlay, but in the end, I went with a Shou Sugi Ban finish... Shou Sugi Ban, for those who might not know, is a Japanese style of finishing wood, mostly done from cedar wood, but the technique can (and has) been used on many other species of wood. After the finish was applied, I wrapped the handle in leather and coated the whole thing with a light application of boiled linseed oil.
I can't wait to use this hiking stick this year when we hit the trials.

Thanks. I’ve been piling it multiple times a day for the past week. It has an awesome sheen to it.

Excellent job, the stitching came out real nice. I make walking sticks for my self. I am going to try the scorching technique. Maybe the leather too. Always good to learn new things. Appreciate the video!

Awesome job! This inspired me to start some of my own sticks. They're slowly progressing, I just gifted one to my brother. I love the Shou Sugi Ban finish, but I'm having trouble preventing the end grain at the top of the sticks from splitting whilst it's being charred. Do you have any ideas on how to prevent this? Thanks Michael

I had a similar issue I had to sand the heads down or rather the tips down to a very high grit. I think I went all the way up till like 600 if I’m not mistaken, and when I charge it, I didn’t hit it head on with the flames and then once I was done with that I went back over with the sandpaper again to get any of the parts that you know we’re flying up. But I think it also might depend on the type of wood that you’re using. But I would definitely start off by sending it down and getting a smooth as possible before you do the finish. Good luck!

How about being a little bit more descriptive with how you are measuring, the exact amount of materials you need in a little voice instruction, along with what type of tools and materials that are being used.

I can do that. I actually just finished prepping a new staff that I’m gonna leather out the handle on this weekend. Maybe I’ll do more of a tutorial style like your suggesting. I will say it’s kind of difficult to give the measurements but I can show you how I can get the measurements. I hope that’ll be enough to get you started. if I shoot it this weekend I’ll probably have it out by next week. Check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks for the feedback!

I’ve fixed more than a few busted straps, but it all depends on how it’s broken. I’d be happy to check it out.

What kind of wood was this?
@PrimalEdge

It was a sapling that I got from a lot they were clean for construction. I’ve had it fir years, drying. I want to say elm or maple, but that’s based on the larger trees left standing in the area. Honestly I can’t remember for very. It was almost 5 year’s ago
