Love your video. Just a tip when pouring up a life cast of a head, don't use wood scraps, I use scrap burlap or sisal fiber to pad it out. Put a bunch at the bottom of the bucket and create a pillow and then stuff it all around. Also don't fill it full of plaster at least not all at once. Do it in layers either pour some in, let it set and pour some more till full. Or do more of a build up brushing it up the sides and all around like painting it on at least till you have about an inch thick of plaster all the way around. The only issue with doing that is not all plasters or gypsums like to bond to each other. A good plaster for doing what I have suggested is ultracal 30. It's also one the strongest mass used gypsum products on the market when it comes to casting. Doing this method will give you a more accurate cast and you shouldnt get weird lumps/ dents in your head. Also the painting method will reduce the air bubbles you get on the surface. Hope this helps and I hope I didn't over step. I've done a ton of these and I have learned great tricks doing them and watching master lifecasters work.
I really like that you played the sponsor ad along with some (non-distracting) footage of the project, it prevented me from just skipping through it, and actually made me feel more interested in the (sponsor's) product. This is your channel's first sponsor of which I have actually remembered what exactly they sell. I will make sure to take a look at Great Courses Plus, and refer to them if I or a friend need something like it.
It really is.. what's super funny is that this cast actually had one of my eyebrow hairs sticking out of it. It transferred to the mold, and stayed in through two other castings before getting stuck in this one.
Should have sprayed it blue! Because reasons! :P Turn it into your own personalised phrenology head when you're done with it :D Or hollow it out and make a Bob Head bedside lamp :P
+Charlie Symons yeah mine was already at the house when I moved in about October last year and it's sadly only 4 X 3 , However I did extend it about 1.5 meters where out bins were but now we moved them so yay more space! Btw at my old house it was a 2 + 1/2 car garage so yeah kinda small compared.
Cool, seriously wanna try some ideas out. Thinking about doing the cast of my head, then lightly covering it in clay, then adding some quartz crystal points all over the clay head. Then I wanna try doing a silicone cast over that to try and make a crystal face mask with something clear.
What material would you make your mold out of for making prosthetic? Which means it would be cast in silicone and foam often. The material needs to be durable.
Hey, I have a question: When poring the casting material, would the cast be better if you shook the mold as pouring, or maybe swirl it around the mold, like what was done with the expanding foam? Looking at doing this at our maker space and just looking to reduce the trial and error where possible.
I definitely think that would help. Also, a mold release, or other spray that would break surface tension will help stop bubbles from forming on the sides. Swirling it around, like you mentioned, would probably be a huge improvement.
A 3D scan of your head would be nice, too. Then you could either replicate yourself with your 3D printer, or laminate multiple layers of laser-cut materials --- in various scales, too.
Great video, do you think it would be worth it to go through the casting process again in the future if anything ever happened to your current casting?
Yeah definitely. I'm going to hang onto the mold just in case. I think the ideal way to do this is to make 1 cast from the original mold, then remold that cast with a more resilient silicone so that you can pull more casts from it in the future. The silicone in the original mold isn't made to hold up to multiple castings.
Do you think paper mache would stick to the plaster? That's the problem I had when I first made a life mask, and I couldn't use it to make anything cause the paper mache would stick to it and ruin it. Would a plastic cast work better? What would you recommend for a light durable cast that will still keep the detail?
Hey Bob... can't wait to see some of the stuff you come up with using your head...and using the cast of your head as well. I remember in a prior video you talked about how making the mold using a different material could pull your hair out. Well, you've got me pulling my hair out. This might be a little inside baseball, but how the heck did you make those subscribe buttons that have hover effects at the end of the video?!?! If you were to make a video on that, it probably wouldn't perform too well...but I can guarantee that it would get at least one thumbs up from this guy right here :)
haha...that makes me feel good because I know there isn't something wrong with me for not being able to figure it out...but bad because I have to wait to use it. Thanks man...appreciate it!
Always something interesting and unusual to watch on your channel Bob. Thanks for the great content, I can't imagine that I will ever make a cast of my head but that didn't stop me from watching the whole video. I probably learned something in the process too.
I Like To Make Stuff I am sure I did, I always learn something from your videos, yesterday I learned a whole bunch about screen printing from a years old video.
I don't know if your friends are like mine, but a dry erase or chalk board face would inadvertently invite interesting remarks left behind, lol. Looks great.
First of all: great video! Do you think it would work to coat the mold with a thin layer of epoxy or polyurethane? It would give the mold a bit more durability and you would be able to use whiteboard markers to do outlining or other temporary drawing.
I really like the way you tie in your sponsor messages lately, it is so much more pleasant to watch since I can still see you do something! :D Great idea!! Oh and you might want to check out the EvilTed Channel as well, he is the guy from tested. On the channel are quite some tips for good seems and doing patterns that fit well. I don't know if his way is the best out there, but from what I know I'd say its pretty smart :)
Thanks! Oh yeah, I love Ted's work! He's exactly where I'm learning all of this stuff to build the helmets. He streams live builds on Twitch as well, in case you want to check that out!
Almost looks like a death mask without the eyebrows and after it was painted, if you added some dead-person detail and made a body for it, you could have your very own you-corpse!
If I had a clay head, I definitely would paint it to look like me and put it in my kids bed, or leave it in the shower for my wife to find, or on the bonnet of my car as an amazing badge. The shenanigans would be great. Actually I'd confuse my dog by putting it on a RC car and have it chase him around giving him commands on a tape, as I sit the other end of my yard giving him opposite commands. That's all for my fun, my dog doesn't listen at all. Well, maybe he obeys 'eat this food' and 'lick your junk'.
Dude I so had to give you a shout out As you just gave me the proof that an Idea I had back a bit about something totaly differant. What I'm going on about is the lazy suzen has a hole through it and I wasn't sure of that before But now that I am ( Thanx ) I can now automate my gardening Grow towers that I use for my greenhouse they allow me to grow as many pants and veggies in a very small space and get the same yield results that my professional farmer uncles do. Thanks again and I also loved these videos as I am also a home grown robotosist and as I am currently following Ricky Ma's lead and building myself a full sized humanoid robot and as I am not a sculpter of Ricky's skill level I am looking at having a female friend of mine do a body cast for me Or pay a company that can do it. I guess you have the means to contact punished props was it if so please have them reach out to me as I would be interested in having them do this work for me. Thanks again I am a long time fan of your videos and look forward to what you do next keep em coming!!!
oh shiz.. An advertisement I actually looked at right away, since I'm a Mech Eng student. I think they owe you extra money.. Don't get me wrong, Casper will be the next mattress I look at. Audible is always something I'll look at and those silicon ring dudes are a potential, but this video's adv is something I opened right away.
