Sakamoto's choice for sounds and his particular chords make him one of a kind. I recognize him instantly. Such an influence on my own music making.

Sakamoto went into making his latest album Async with the idea of scoring a nonexistent Tarkovsky film. He uses a lot of everyday sounds on this album. Sakamoto must have enjoyed working on the score of the Revenant, as it was heavily inspired by Tarkovsky's film.

Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence and The Last Emperor are two of the greatest movie scores of all time, especially The Last Emperor (but oh man, that main theme of MCML!). Not to mention Yellow Magic Orchestra is one of the big pioneers of electronic music (alongside Kraftwerk and a couple others). He's no-joke one of the greatest modern composers and definitely one of the greatest living composers. Thanks for making such a great video about him ScreenPrism! :)

One could argue that MCML has a stronger theme (which I could have sympathy for that arguement), but I think TLE has a stronger overall score.
@Akuninjia
@Akuninjia 6 лет назад
Hieronymus di Colonna I absolutely agree (I once dismissed MCML as "80s soundtrack weirdness" though, but I redeemed myself, the soundtrack is great all around, I expecially love the "Germination" and "Before the War" pieces) MCML has an iconic main theme, but The Last Emperor as a whole is so amazing

@danilalikhachev341
@danilalikhachev341 6 лет назад
His work on Bertolucci's Oriental Trilogy is one of the pinnacles of modern film music. I had a new-found appreciation for it only last week. Sakamoto deserves every praise, he's a unique composer that's working in all three musical fields - academic, experimental and popular. And to some amazing results. His latest album, async, is nothing short of a masterpiece. Thanks for the analysis. Though I believe Call me by Your Name feels a bit odd in the list of films analyzed, as he didn't work on the movie, they've just selected some of his works along with the tracks of other artists. So it misses the crucial aspect of a composers conscious effort of scoring a scene, as the music was originally made for a different occasion

What a legend! Thanks for this video. Here's some more things you might want to know if you liked the video: What's amazing about Sakamoto is that he did not only achieve the greatest of impacts on film score. He also has an influence in the sound of Hiphop and EDM. I know, a crazy claim, But it's a true statement. You see, he was part of YMO, one of the greatest experimental music acts in the last century. YMO's music had such a unique new sound that will be sampled and mimicked starting from the inception of Hiphop and Electronic music and that continues even now in our very recent days. Forming many classic songs that helped in developing said genres in great ways. I really feel like he doesn't get the recognition that he deserves globally. p.s Sakamoto was not the only nor the biggest part of YMO, That would be Haroumi Hosono. the dude is a sensational figure. He also had a project that doesn't include Sakamoto which is a band called Happy End. They are as big as a rock band ever had an impact in Japan. Sakamoto and Hosono are musical legends that will be recalled in history in the same breath as the Beatles and Kanye. Such names!

There are many great composers out there, but the thing that differentiates Kanno is her versatility. I don't know anyone else who writes jazz, rock, electronic and orcherstral pieces with the same high quality. She truly can do anything! Besides the world of anime is choke full of great composers. Yuki Kajiura, Sawano Hiroyuki, Michiru Oshima, Jun Maeda, Joe Hisaishi, to just name a few of the greatest.
